Alarum’s ending mostly centers around how Joe Travers (real name Archibald), an ex-assassin, and his wife, Laura, a member of the titular intelligence agency, deal with the imminent threat while they are vacationing in Gdansk, Poland. But before jumping into the film’s narrative, I just want to say that I found the beginning of the film quite amusing. Some five years ago, Joe, who had been working for the US Clandestine Service (likely CIA), came to Prague to eliminate a target, Laura, aka Larissa Moss, but instead of killing her, he fell in love with her. During the fight, she asked Joe, “What are you doing after this?” to which he replied, “No plans.” I guess that’s what the writers of Alarum had in mind for the film, “no plans at all.” With that said, Alarum doesn’t really have an ending. It’s mostly a setup for a sequel where American Joe will take revenge on those who tried to kill him and his wife. However, I do wish we don’t see that day. But that’s just me, so without further ado, let’s explore the ending of Alarum and what we can expect next.
Spoiler Alert
Orlin and Krol Are Dead
It all started when a Yellow Jacket assassin, Orlin, shot two DEA agents during an exchange gone wrong. It seemed like Orlin was there to retrieve a “flight pill” for his contractor when an undercover DEA agent overplayed his hand, and Orlin had no other option but to use his “barbarism.” After shooting them down, he jumped off the DEA plane and later arrived in the woods outside Gdansk, where the plane had crashed. He tried to collect the “flight pill,” but it was too late. Joe had already removed it from one of the pilot’s bodies and escaped from the scene. Joe tried to use the pill as leverage so that his previous employer, Director Donald Burbridge, let him enjoy his retirement in exchange for the pill, but Burbridge just wanted the rogue agent dead. He sent another assassin named Chester to retrieve the pill and clean up the mess, but before he could do so, Joe’s wife, Laura, dealt with the bad guys who were terrorizing the tourists in the resort herself. In Alarum’s ending, Laura slashed Krol’s throat and shot Orlin in the head. And by the way, the flight pill was a flash drive that contained confidential information on half of the DEA’s covert operations, therefore compromising the agency’s fieldwork. It seemed like a double agent had gained access to the DEA’s computer or files and extracted information that he was going to sell to Orlin’s contractor, but before he could do so, things went haywire, and the flash drive ended up in Gdansk, somewhere it was never meant to be.
Laura Is Still A Part Of The Secret Agency
So even though Joe had quit being an assassin or an agent, his wife, Laura, was still working for an independent shadow agency called Alarum, which, according to Laura, means “call to arms.” She has been trying to convince Joe to join the agency, but he liked living in peace and didn’t want to get his hands dirty again. But it seemed like after the affairs of the film, Joe would have no other option but to join Alarum and use their help to take down Burbridge so that the man obsessed with AWOL agents would finally stop hunting him down.
The film also suggested that all Alarum agents had a tattoo that somewhat looked like the letter “A.” The pilot or the DEA agent who had swallowed the flight pill had the same tattoo on his neck, suggesting that he could be working for Alarum, just like Laura, and he was the one who messed up Orlin’s deal because he didn’t want the sensitive intel to go into the wrong hands. And Joe, who had quit his job a long time ago, only decided to intervene after he saw the tattoo, which made him believe that something really shady was going on in the port city of Poland.
The Case Of Roland Rousseau
In Gdansk, Laura’s mission was to get close to a French citizen named Roland Rousseau, who was staying at the resort with his wife, Bridgette. Back in France, Roland owned a bank that was being used to launder money for an arms dealer. The Americans believed that Alarum wanted to recruit Roland, though it didn’t seem like the case to me. Maybe Laura and her team wanted to get through to the arms dealer and eliminate him, which was why she had taken Roland hostage.
The Team Will Return
During Alarum’s ending, as soon as Burbridge got the confirmation that Chester had recovered the stolen flash drive, he ordered a drone strike on the resort to kill everyone around. Fortunately, Laura and Joe survived the attack and finally met each other in the woods. At dusk, they arrived at the lake where Chester had been waiting for them. Now, here Chester believed that he had injected Joe with KR-45, a lethal poison developed by the Americans, though that wasn’t the case. Joe had already replaced the contents of the syringe because he knew Chester would pull such a stunt. And not just that. He had even laced Chester’s vodka with the same poison through which he intended to kill Joe, and therefore in the end, it was Chester who needed the antidote, but before he could inject himself, Joe took it away and decided to give it back only under one condition: if Chester would convince every black bag (covert or clandestine agents) to join his side so that together they could end the tyranny of Director Donald Burbridge and exact revenge for what he tried to do with Joe in Poland. Also, Joe had the flash drive in his possession, which he could use against the DEA or to cut a favorable deal with them. By the way, yes Chester joined their team to bring down Burbridge.
In Alarum’s ending, a cleaning crew arrived at the scene to clean up the “bloody mess” on land, though it didn’t seem like they were working for Donald or any other American intelligence agency. Instead, they were a part of Alarum itself. Previously, Donald had been trying to get a local company to do the on the ground cleaning work and even talked to a guy on the phone who was literally wearing a jacket with the Alarum logo on it, suggesting that he had been involved with Laura’s agency and wouldn’t be working for Donald. So, the cleaning crew that arrived in Gdansk was likely to extract Laura, Chester, Roland Rousseau, and Joe to take them to a safe location. In the next film we can expect the team to return, where they will wage war against Donald and the agency he works for so as to teach him a much-needed lesson.
