Netflix has just added a movie that was dubbed ‘one of the best horror films of this century’ to its catalogue.
Pearl, which is now available to watch on the streaming platform, was originally released in 2022. It follows a young woman who pursues stardom in hopes of escaping the isolation of living on her parents’ Texas farm. Her pursuit soon becomes riddled with violent outbursts that viewers branded ‘morbidly dark.’
Leading the cast is Mia Goth, who collaborated with director Ti West for the entire X film series. Pearl serves as the prequel to the trilogy, which includes the original slasher film, X and its 2024 sequel, MaXXXine.
Each of the West dramas has garnered praise from horror movie fanatics, with Pearl receiving a 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Meanwhile X bagged a 94% rating and MaXXXine scored 72%.
Viewers often applaud Goth’s acting as one of the leading qualities of the franchise, with many claiming that she deserved a nod from the Academy Awards. Following the release of Pearl, filmmaker West echoed this sentiment.
He told The Independent: “In my opinion she deserved it [an Oscar], but at the same time, I don’t feel that it takes anything away from what she did. It would have just been a nice addition.”
Although she did not earn recognition from the Oscars, viewers have raved about Goth’s portrayal of the titular character since the film’s debut. On Rotten Tomatoes, one person said: “Arguably the single greatest performance I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Mia Goth is sensational. Truly impactful performance.”
A second penned: “Mia Goth gives an utterly gut wrenching and emotional performance which was snubbed by Oscars just like Toni Collette in Hereditary!”
While a third person wrote: “Pearl is a morbidly dark yet extraordinary character study with Mia Goth as the star!”
Another movie-goer shared an in-depth review online, stating: “Even after being impressed by X and thus having my hopes raised I was still really struck with Pearl. This isn’t just a better movie than X but one of the top horror films of the past decade.”
They later added: “I called this one of the best horror films of the past decade. Indeed, I’d put it on a short list of top scary movies this century…”
