Robbie Williams has broken his silence over Better Man – after the film flopped in the US. The star, who is married to ITV The X Factor judge Ayda Field, has spoken out over Better Man after it failed to hit dizzy heights in the United States.
Robbie said: “There is so much that didn’t make the movie. Only because we couldn’t fit it in – not because I was too embarrassed or ashamed to put it in… many stories. It would have had to be a five-hour film to fit everything in. And hopefully it does good and there is a Better Man 2.”
He told Aussie DJ Sean Brown: “I am an actor. I’ve acted at being a pop star for the last 30-plus years. It is what I do.” He said: “She’s the child that wants to be famous the most – way more than I did. It’s terrifying. I tried to explain to her, ‘It doesn’t fix you’. But she won’t listen to me, of course.

“After the film, she was like, ‘Daddy, can I walk around the garden with you?’ And she held my hand and said, ‘I get it’.” The film, which portrays the British pop icon’s rise to fame using a CGI monkey as Williams’s on-screen persona, has failed to connect with viewers across the Atlantic, grossing a disappointing $1.1 million (£908k) overseas so far.
Produced independently with a hefty budget of $110 million (£90.8m), the project’s financial struggles highlight the disconnect between Williams’s superstar status in the UK and his near-anonymity in the US. Director Michael Gracey described the film as a raw look at Williams, capturing how he felt “less evolved than other people”.
While Better Man has fared better in the UK, its numbers remain underwhelming considering the budget, earning £1.5 million in its opening week and £3.8 million to date.
