In a shocking turn of events, four students were arrested by Gwadar police on Wednesday for setting up a book stall as part of the “Kitab Karawan” event, organized by the Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC) to welcome the new year.
The event aimed to promote educational awareness and provide access to books in cities across Balochistan. The police not only arrested the students but also confiscated the books, sparking widespread outrage on social media. Many are protesting against this act, condemning the authorities for suppressing freedom of expression and education.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the students had organized book stalls on the main road, which had obstructed the flow of traffic, and books containing provocative content were being sold there.
This incident is not isolated, as similar events have been disrupted in other cities, including Taunsa, Naseerabad, and Hub Chowki, where students were harassed by the police and videos of the police action against them went viral.
The arrest of the students and the confiscation of books has raised concerns about the shrinking space for freedom of expression and education in Balochistan.
