AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Storybridge Amarillo is calling on the community to donate gently used or new books for its annual Dream and Donate book drive this Saturday.
The nonprofit organization aims to collect 18,000 books for children from preschool through fifth grade.
Chandra Perkins, executive director of Storybridge, said, “We saw at the end of our program in December, we were at the bottom of our inventory of chapter books for like 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th graders. So this year we’re really asking people to remember that children also read chapter books in elementary school.”
Last year, the community donated over 14,000 books, which lasted six months.
Perkins emphasized the importance of variety in donations, saying, “That’s the nice thing about getting gently used donations from the community is we cannot replicate that kind of variety and offer that kind of variety for kids to be able to find what they’re really interested in Kindergarten versus what they’re interested in 3rd grade and it’s going to change in 5th grade.”
Perkins noted that books for babies, and elementary, and middle school children are needed.
“Easy for kids to play with as a toy, chew on, that kind of thing. We’re going to see classic picture books,” said Perkins. “So as long as they’re in good shape, these are perfect for our elementary program. When we have kids learning how to read chapter books, they like to start easy. So, let’s see books like Magic Treehouse.”
Perkins also said that Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dork Diaries are also popular series but anything more mature than Harry Potter isn’t the age group they’re looking for.
Storybridge will be collecting books from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the United at 45th and Bell in Amarillo and the United in Canyon.
