Netflix‘s most watched movie roster confirms what the most consistently popular film genre really is thanks to its iron grip on this leaderboard. With Netflix seeing countless hours of viewing time every week, hitting the streaming service’s most watched movie or show list is a colossal feat, and one very few releases actively accomplish in their time on the platform.
That said, almost all of Netflix’s current top 10 most watched movies have held their respective spots for a relatively considerable amount of time, with the exception of Netflix’s new number one most watched film, KPop Demon Hunters. Though their backgrounds and plots often differ massively, the vast majority of the movies in this list also notably have one shared genre in common.
Seven Of Netflix’s Top 10 Most Watched Movies Share The Same Genre
Of Netflix’s list of most watched ever films, the vast majority all find themselves within one shared genre: action. KPop Demon Hunters, Red Notice, Carry-On, The Adam Project, Back in Action, The Gray Man, and Damsel all collectively draw clearly and evidently from this genre, underlining the success that the action genre enjoys in the present day thanks to their staggering combined watch time.

While Don’t Look Up, Bird Box, and Leave the World Behind don’t fall as prevalently into this category, they arguably come close to being movies that could also fit into this label, and only avoid being ascribed it in the same manner because they focus more on one or more other genres – for example, Bird Box could easily be called an action movie in some senses, but it is evidently more of a sci-fi horror.
Given Netflix is one of the biggest streaming services of all time, the consistent success of action films on the platform speaks volumes to just how big the genre is – a concept supported by a history of films like Die Hard and the Fast & Furious series being some of the most recognizable franchises of all time in terms of pop culture significance, and given the genre’s penchant for bringing in immense box office results.
Why The Action Genre Is So Popular
The success of the action genre is in part that it’s able to co-exist with so many others in a way that enhances a film’s overall viewing experience. For example, KPop Demon Hunters is a fantasy action film, with its beautifully animated and choreographed fight scenes helping the film grip audiences, and effectively communicate just how intense the lives of the central demon hunter team really are.
That said, the action genre’s success is also crucially based on the fact that the fundamental nature of action films is to appeal to broad audiences.
Getting to watch larger-than-life feats and events is one of the most basic reasons to visit the cinema or watch a movie at home, and that concept is one that’s almost inherently intertwined with the action genre, which naturally serves as a major factor behind its prominence.
As such, as time moves forward, it will be interesting to see if Netflix‘s most watched movies remain dominated by the action genre, or if any other genres compete more actively in this field, since the future is far from set in stone when it comes to what the streaming service’s most watched movies are.
