Livingston chosen as finalist for book awards

For Lake Oswego author Annie Livingston, books were a major part of her childhood. Now, she has a chance to win a prestigious award in the Oregon literary community.
Livingston was named a finalist for an Oregon Book Award in the Children’s Literature category for her book “Grizelda the Green Hates Halloween.”
“Books were a huge part of my childhood, and I hope that Grizelda the Green Hates Halloween inspires kids to read — whether it’s another picture book, a graphic novel, or even a cereal box,” said Annie Livingston via email.
Illustrated by Katya Longhi, “Grizelda” tells the story of a town’s grumpy witch who tries to put a stop to Halloween.
“The big challenge is having to be so succinct. You don’t have a lot of pages or even words to create a surprising story with interesting characters. But it’s a challenge I love,” said Livingston.
An experienced children’s literature author, this is Livingston’s first recognition from the Oregon Book Awards.
“When I heard the news, I was shocked and delighted. It was completely unexpected! I’m so honored to be recognized in this way, especially in such good company with the other finalists,” said Livingston.
She added that the Lake Oswego store Let’s Celebrate hosted her book launch and she has felt supported by the bookstore community in the Portland area.
“Hopefully, kids will feel shocked at Grizelda’s behaviors, laugh at her reactions, squirm at the worms, and cheer on the kids in the story for their resourcefulness. I also hope Grizelda’s journey shows that people can surprise you, and that you can surprise yourself,” said Livingston. “Katya Longhi’s artwork really brought Grizelda and the trick-or-treaters to life. Grizelda’s initial sulking and grouchy expressions contrast wonderfully with the open and eager faces of the trick-or-treating children. I think the color scheme she chose helped to make the book spooky without it being scary, which is exactly what I hoped for.”
The Oregon Book Awards ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20 at Portland Center Stage. The full list of Oregon Book Award finalists is available online.
