A horror film branded “disturbing and dark” by viewers airs on Film4 this evening. The motion picture, which debuted in 2022, centres on Noa (portrayed by Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones), who encounters the charming Steve (Gossip Girl’s Sebastian Stan) in a supermarket and, tired of dating apps, decides to give him her number.
Following their initial date, Noa is captivated and agrees to Steve’s suggestion of a romantic weekend escape, only to discover her new beau has been concealing some peculiar appetites and all is not what it appears. The picture marks Mimi Cave’s directorial debut and has earned acclaim for its fusion of macabre comedy with horror and its satirical take on contemporary romance.
The production received 19 award nominations, securing two victories, and has garnered enthusiastic support from audiences who awarded it an impressive 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One reviewer on the platform declared: “Can’t get enough of this movie! Great acting! I’m watching it again tonight. It kept my attention throughout the whole movie. I loved it!”
Another enthused: “A thrilling movie led by Daisy Edgar Jones and Sebastian Stan. It takes a concept and make it into to something so gravitating – every second on the edge of your seat. Definitely worth a watch.”
One viewer commented: “Great performances by both lead actors. The movie feels a bit boring for the first few minutes, as Noa’s life and opinions on dating [and] love provide a very bleak vibe. But don’t you worry, the thrills start about 25 minutes in, and they only pick up from there.”
Another awarded it five stars, exclaiming: “This movie is delicious! The setting is disturbing and dark in a way finished, well decorated homes only can be. It’s a realistic, in your home horror that sticks with you.
“Sebastian Stan nailed it! He was so charming and charismatic that as a viewer you completely let your guard down with him. That only made the horrific things he did more terrifying.
“Daisy Edgar-Jones deserves an award for her performance. She nailed it with the layers of apathy, despair, terror, and rage. I was rooting for her the entire time. There were so many nods to classic horrors in this film, like The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, and of course American Psycho.
“This movie wasn’t gory or filled with jump scares but I was unsettled and afraid almost the entire time. This one deserves a theatrical release and cult following for sure! I’ll be looking out for more from this director and writer. Loved every minute.”
Yet another shared: “I went into this thinking I would be bored and half entertained, but I was hooked ever since the protagonists meet. I finally found the main character likeable and loved the way she played him to his death.
“It’s a must-see if you can put up with some gore. Love this storyline and the ending was a subtle comedic genius.”
