Golden State Warriors NBA basketball player Stephen Curry is expanding his career past just professional basketball and into the film industry with his brand-new movie, “GOAT,” which shows in theaters on Feb. 13. Basketball fans have mainly known Steph Curry for his basketball achievements, NBA championships, and leadership abilities on the court. However, this new film shows he is pushing past what is expected in his basketball career.
Steph Curry is still playing for the Golden State Warriors, but he has pursued other endeavors beyond being on the court, taking part both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. In stepping into the entertainment space, Curry gave credit to his wife, Ayesha Curry, for helping him feel Stephen Curry featured in promotional material for “GOAT.”
In an interview with USA Today, he shared he observed one of her vocal sessions before beginning his own work. He stated, “I actually got to watch one of her [vocal] sessions before I went. She has been acting her whole life and is the talented one in this space, so she kind of broke the ice for me, which was cool.” He explained that watching her preparation helped him as he approached his role in “GOAT.”
Steph Curry is also looking to build skills off of the court by pursuing other creative lanes. Besides contributing creatively to developing the film, he has taken on production responsibilities.
Producer Michelle Raimo Kouyate stated he was involved in the filmmaking process. According to Kouyate, despite his busy schedule and professional commitments, Curry offered feedback, provided insight into gameplay details, and contributed to character development. She described him as “a great producer” who remained engaged in several aspects of the movie’s development.
Curry also shared in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle that basketball has “opened a lot of doors” and that he does not want to limit what may be possible in the future. He discussed the importance of selecting the right projects and working with the right team, explaining that collaboration plays a major role in his decision-making process.
Although Curry has expressed interest in developing further in the film industry, he noted that pursuing acting would require a significant level of commitment. He acknowledged that going all in would demand more time than he can currently give while playing professional basketball. While he did not dismiss the possibility of future acting projects, he explained that pursuing it would not fit into his current schedule and responsibilities.
