Emerald Fennell’s unused DC movie script just got even more interesting in the wake of the release of the creator’s most recent film release. With Promising Young Woman and Saltburn catapulting Fennell’s career as a writer, director and producer into the spotlight in a major way, there was much anticipation about her next film, 2026’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Given how persistently famous the Wuthering Heights novel has managed to be over the course of more than a century, there has been much interest in terms of seeing what this new rendition of the story would be like. Ultimately, the reception to said film has been a decidedly mixed one, which has also made the matter of what Emerald Fennell’s Zatanna movie would have been like an even more intriguing prospect.
Wuthering Heights Makes Emerald Fennell’s Unused Zatanna Movie Script Even More Interesting
Emerald Fennell’s Zatanna movie script has been a fascinating concept ever since it was first revealed that the unused script had been written, particularly since Zatanna has yet to get a full live-action movie of her own.
That said, this idea is one that becomes doubly intriguing following the release of Wuthering Heights, due to the differing ways that the 2026 movie has been received, thanks to the manner in which it adapts the pre-existing source material of the original Wuthering Heights book.
While Wuthering Heights adapts much of the core plot and themes of the book, it also makes some major adjustments to things that have drawn criticism from viewers – such as more or less removing a good portion of the book, which delves more into the next generation of characters to show how cycles of violence can persist throughout the decades.
With this context in mind, the question of how Fennell adapted the decades of intricate lore Zatanna has throughout DC’s comics is all the more fascinating, since it seems entirely possible that the iconic magician’s superhero movie story could have also seen substantial adjustments, especially based on Emerald Fennell’s own comment that the movie’s script was “maybe a little too far away from the genre.”
How A Zatanna Movie Could Still Be Possible
Though it doesn’t seem that Emerald Fennel’s Zatanna movie script will be seeing the light in the form of a full on-screen adaptation, this doesn’t preclude the DC hero from ever getting her live-action solo film debut. Indeed, given the current setup of the DC Universe, the chances of this actively happening do seem more possible now than ever in many ways.
With the DCU having already given dedicated projects to the likes of less well-known characters such as Peacemaker and the Creature Commandos, it stands to reason that it’s entirely possible for a story revolving around Zatanna to also become reality in this cinematic universe.
Given the DC Universe has already set up the magical side of the franchise via introducing figures like Circe into its world, it would also make sense for Zatanna to appear in order to flesh out this side of the lore even further. However, given Emerald Fennell’s Zatanna DC project is not going forward and the DCU’s focus is clearly on other characters for now, the character’s on-screen fate is seemingly yet to be decided.
