An ‘unhinged’ gangster movie that stars an unrecognisable Tom Hardy is leaving Netflix soon.
Time is running out for users of the streamer to check out the period drama which is inspired by the real life of one of the most notorious criminals. The Dark Knight and Peaky Blinders star Harding takes on the formidable role of Al Capone, during the final year of his life.
The film, Capone, was originally released back in 2020 on digital platforms. Its original theatrical release was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic ongoing at the time, meaning many audience members may have missed out on the title upon its initial release. However, Netflix now state that the last day to watch the film will be February 24.
According to the synopsis, the film follows the man who was once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist. Alfonse Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, Capone is diagnosed with dementia and past becomes mixed with the present.

Harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life. As he spends his final year surrounded by family with the FBI lying in wait, this ailing patriarch struggles to place the memory of the location of millions of dollars he hid away on his property.
It was written and directed by filmmaker Josh Trank who previously helmed superpowered indie hit Chronicle in 2012 and the previous attempt at a Fantastic Four reboot in 2015 before Marvel took over the characters.
While reviews were largely mixed, there are still some aspects of the movie that are said to be worth checking out, while it is still available on Netflix. As Empire’s critic claimed: “It’s unhinged, and lacks subtleties and depths, but also has an imagination and out-there-ness that is rarely found in franchises. In detailing the last year of the gangster’s life.”
Several others claim that it is Hardy’s performance that make it worth watching along. One fan posted: “While a sad and dramatic biopic about Capone’s last days, Tom Hardy solidifies himself as one of the great character actors of our time. For great performances and a fairly deep psychological biopic, this is a film to watch. Hardy’s performance as Al Capone is worth it alone. It’s not a typical violent mob movie but more so a look into the struggles of Capone and his family as his neuro-syphilis catches up to him.

Someone else added: “The depiction of Al Capone in this movie was breathtaking. Some people found it hard to follow, others found it quite boring, however these are the same folks that were expecting to see a mobster movie.”
They continued: “This movie is not a mobster movie at all, it is a wonderful film showing the last year of life for a troubled and very sick mobster. When you see the name you may expect to see a La Casa nostra massacre, however what you see is the deterioration of one’s mind when diagnosed with neurosyphilis.
“This movie is a masterpiece balance between the life of a mobster and the thought of righteousness through an opinionated last days of wishful do-over helplessness. Understanding the delicate nature of a terminal illness, paired with the ego of a confined mafia crime boss, this film will deliver you a new insight to mafia rags to riches back to to rags. Although it steps in to the mind of a mentally ill crime boss without authentication. It also gives perspective of what may have been their hopeful last thoughts.”
Capone is streaming on Netflix until February 24.
