Kohima, September 23 (MExN): An awareness programme on cyber safety security was organised by the Anti Sexual Harassment Cell in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Kohima Science College (Autonomous) Jotsoma. The event saw participation from students across all semesters and teaching faculty.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Principal Dr Temjenwabang, who highlighted the pressing dangers and threats posed by the virtual world. Emphasizing the theme of the day, he encouraged students to prioritize their “cyber hygiene” just as they would their personal hygiene, stressing the need for vigilance in the digital age.
The resource person for the event, Vizhatuo Michael Yhome, Additional Superintendent of Police for Cyber Crime, delivered an insightful presentation. He began by addressing the generational shifts in survival mindsets and the importance of adapting to new challenges, particularly those posed by cyber threats. His talk was enriched with real-life examples, serving as a practical guide for attendees.
Yhome outlined the cyber crime landscape in Nagaland, categorizing it into two main types: financial frauds and social media-related crimes. He detailed various forms of financial fraud, including phishing, lottery scams, and OLX scams. Additionally, he addressed social media issues such as cyber stalking, impersonation, fake news, sextortion, and criminal intimidation. His clear explanations provided attendees with crucial knowledge on how to recognize and avoid these unlawful acts.
“We humans have lost sense of our values,” Yhome remarked, lamenting the decline in genuine human connections due to excessive device usage. He concluded his presentation by revisiting the key points discussed and urging everyone to remain vigilant against the ongoing threat of cyber crimes.
