Following record-setting visitation and economic impact, Destination DC unveils strategies for further tourism push

Presidential Inauguration, WorldPride and citywide conventions, meetings and sports help sustain momentum of $10.2 billion industry
Major events of international interest and several notable openings present opportunities for continued growth for Washington, DC’s $10.2 billion tourism industry, according to Destination DC (DDC), the official destination marketing organisation of the nation’s capital. DDC unveiled strategies to build on an impactful first year of its “Only One DC” campaign and leverage events, including the presidential inauguration and WorldPride 2025, at its annual Marketing Outlook Meeting at the Washington Hilton.
“India continues to be a market of top importance to Washington, DC, welcoming 165,100 Indian visitors in 2023,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, II, President and CEO of DDC. “The market is currently the city’s second largest overseas inbound market and reflects the highest spending total at $287,400,000 USD for the year.”
“DDC launched its award-winning campaign last year in India. ‘There’s Only One Washington, DC’ positions the destination as wholly unique, spotlighting a diversity of experiences that research shows India prioritises, including arts and culture, shopping, luxury amenities and a robust culinary scene. “Additional funding has allowed us to reach more potential travellers than any campaign to date. In 2025, we will continue to be more aggressive with our global advertising in the Indian market and plan to meet with Indian travel agents and media.”
“Nearly 26 million visitors to Washington, DC last year directly supported more than just our hotels, restaurants, tour operators and local businesses. Over $10 billion in spending and $2 billion in tax revenue impacts the entire city, emphasising the continued importance of tourism to Washington, DC”
Washington, DC welcomed a record-breaking 25.95 million total visitors in 2023, up 17 percent from 2022 and surpassing the pre-pandemic record set in 2019. The data underscores the importance of increased tourism to the city’s economy. The new benchmark resulted in a record $10.2 billion in visitor spending, $2.065 billion in tax revenue and supported a record 102,366 local jobs, according to MMGY Travel Intelligence, S&P Global Market Intelligence, the National Travel & Tourism Office and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Following the National Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring, WorldPride 2025 is expected to bring approximately two million overnight visitors, May 23-June 8, with an economic impact of $787 million (S&P Global). This will be only the second time an American city has hosted the international celebration. A variety of events are planned to inspire, empower and connect the international LGBTQ+ community and its allies, including a festival, parade and sports competitions.
Visitors can look forward to new developments and free attractions. 13 September marked the installation of a new centrepiece of the National World War I Memorial, “A Soldier’s Journey.” On Sept. 23, “The People’s House: A White House Experience,” will open as a cutting-edge new White House visitors centre. There is $10.2 billion in projects currently under construction, according to the Washington, DC Economic Partnership.
Citywide conventions and meetings of all sizes are important to DDC’s strategy and role as an economic engine for Washington, DC. In 2025, there are 341,803 total room nights stemming from citywide convention business with an economic impact of $344 million. In addition, 334 non-convention centre meetings are responsible for 280,854 total room nights, with another 170,000 total room nights possible, based on DDC’s models. Opportunity areas include short-term, incentive and corporate business. Growing international meetings is a focus of DDC’s “Collective,” which is in town this week. The group consists of the International Business Events Council and those planning annual meetings in DC. It helps strengthen Washington, DC’s positioning around the world as a one-of-a-kind meetings destination that adds value to programming.
Washington, DC’s hotel market outlook is positive, according to STR as DC’s occupancy, average daily rate and revenue per available room has made fast gains and is in the top 25 in the U.S. relative to 2019. Hotel occupancy is up three percent through July 2024 compared to 2023. There are 23 new or renovated hotels and 3,937 rooms in the pipeline through 2028. Middleburg, Virginia-based Salamander Collection is expected to complete its ongoing phased enhancements to the former Mandarin Oriental this fall, with Dōgon, renowned chef Kwame Onwuachi’s highly anticipated return to the city, opening Sept. 9. Among several other rebrands and renovations across the city, Arlo Hotels is expected to debut its first property in DC this fall, near Judiciary Square.
DDC, Events DC and its partners are diversifying ongoing efforts to bring sporting events to the city, including opportunities under the umbrella of the 2026 World Cup, bidding for the men’s and women’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and 2033, and NCAA basketball and hockey tournaments. DDC and its partners serve as a leader in shining a light on women’s sports, such as DC Power FC’s inaugural season.
Anticipation is also building for 2026, when Washington, DC will host a year-long celebration commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. The full calendar of events will be announced as details are finalised.

#EdoDecides2024: APC Is Doing Politics, Opposition Parties Are Doing Political Science – Adebayo

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Adewole Adebayo, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is the party practicing politics in Nigeria while the opposition political parties are occupied with Political Science.
Adewole Adebayo, however, called on the opposition parties to come together and close the gap that is being maximized by the ruling APC.
He said this on Sunday, in a statement, while reacting to the victory of the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, in Saturday’s Edo governorship election.
“Edo State Governorship Election 2024 has taught me that APC is doing politics and we in the opposition are doing political science whilst the Nigerian people on whose behalf we are fighting are doing actuarial science. But for the sake of the survival of democracy and Nigeria as a polity, the gap must be bridged ahead of 2027,” Adebayo said.
The SDP chieftain also commended the Edo governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata for putting up a good performance during the governorship contest on Saturday.
“I commend Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party for such a brilliant campaign and eliminating the lazy excuse that the Edo people did not have credible alternatives to the status quo duo of the APC and PDP.
“The hunger in the People’s stomachs has not been communicated to their thumbs. The majority of the electorate cannot continue to vote for the status quo by not coming out on Election Day. We will not give up on the people and this most beautiful and glorious country. I wish Edo State people all the best and may God bless Nigeria,” Adebayo added.

Report: Tablets in CT, U.S. prisons don’t fill the void of books

A new report finds using computer tablets in prisons in Connecticut and nationwide isn’t filling the void of books. The Prison Policy Initiative report notes more states provide access to tablets for prisoners. In 2019, only 12 states allowed them – now, 48 do. But tablet use is increasing at a time when accessing physical books is a challenge due to bans. Connecticut has close to 2,500 titles on its banned list, though some deemed explicit include medical books. Wanda Bertram, communications strategist with the Prison Policy Initiative, said these devices make blanket book bans easier to impose. “Someone who is eager to learn and to read books to escape the world that they’re living in, is not going to find a ton on tablets that’s going to be that stimulating for them,” said Bertram. “The books that are offered on tablets don’t seem to be filling the void that’s left when prisons choose to restrict access to physical reading.”A PEN America survey finds 84% of prisons have implemented ‘content neutral’ book bans. This means instead of being able to directly send an incarcerated person a book, friends and family members have to choose a title from a prison-approved vendor. Experts say limiting literature can be counterintuitive for prisons. Studies show increased literacy rates, reading, and education programs in prison are key to reducing recidivism and reincarceration.Pandemic-induced staff shortages are lingering in prisons, which also has led to library services being restricted or cut entirely. Bertram said she thinks books are critical for people behind bars, noting they can aid with mental health or allow people to plan for life after incarceration. She said prisons can ensure incarcerated people’s access to books.”Not only are libraries a valuable resource when it comes to just allowing people to read, they’re also valuable as a place where people can meet and talk to each other,” said Bertram. “Some of the most impactful peer-to-peer or incarcerated people-led programs that have come up in prisons originated in libraries.”While she said she wants to be more optimistic, the growth of computer tablet use is coming at the cost of accessing physical books. A 2023 Marshall Project review finds state prisons explicitly banned over 50,000 books. At the same time, 23 states, Washington, D.C., and the Federal Bureau of Prisons say they evaluate books on a case-by-case basis – but use vague rules and have little oversight.

The Shawshank Redemption at 30: is it really the greatest film ever made?

The Shawshank Redemption is not the greatest film ever made. Heck, it’s not even one of best films of 1994 – the year of Pulp Fiction, Hoop Dreams, Chungking Express, Exotica, Quiz Show and the last two entries in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colours trilogy. And yet it continues to sit at or near the top of IMDb’s top 250, currently a shade above The Godfather and The Dark Knight, despite opening to polite reviews, middling box office and a resurgent Oscar campaign that nonetheless yielded zero awards. That’s an incredible comeback story, a video-and-cable-fueled long game as steady and methodical as, say, spending two decades chipping a hole in the prison walls with a rock hammer.Much of the film’s standing in a site like the IMDb has to do with mass consensus, in this case about 3 million voters rallying around a drama that’s broadly loved, which would not happen for a film like the recent Sight & Sound critic’s poll winner Jeanne Dielman, a 200-minute temporal experiment that appeals to a narrower subset of viewers. Yet plenty of acclaimed studio movies are aimed at the largest audience possible, so it’s significant that The Shawshank Redemption still speaks profoundly to so many people 30 years later. There are any number of obvious reasons for that, starting with a Morgan Freeman performance that uses his serene gravitas as much for storytelling as it does for soulful character work.Yet writer-director Frank Darabont, working from the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, has made an old-fashioned prison drama that stealthily – and, at times, shamelessly – evolves into a jailbreak movie in both the spiritual and literal sense of the term. It grips you first as an uplifting lesson in how to break free of earthly confinements before angling toward an even happier ending, one that rewards the ingenuity of its inmate heroes while giving the bad guys their just deserts. That’s Hollywood, perhaps, but there’s a depth of feeling to The Shawshank Redemption that’s well-earned, tied to a central friendship that spans decades and grows through resistance, like green shoots through cracks in the prison yard.Banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for murdering his wife and her lover, and the judge condemns him for his cold calculation during trial. It turns out only the latter part is true. When Andy arrives at Shawshank state prison in 1947, the roughnecks who populate the place, especially Ellis “Red” Redding, assume this reedy, white-collar man will crack, but prison just sharpens his resolve. Told that Red is a go-to source for contraband, Andy orders a rock hammer and a large poster of Rita Hayworth, which seems to indicate an uncommon passion for geology and a common passion for bombshells. Yet Red quickly comes to appreciate Andy’s resilience in the face of repeated sexual assaults and his persistence in making prison better for himself and the men around him.Andy and Red also share a gift for finding the angles, whether through Red’s sophisticated contraband operation or Andy’s shrewdly leveraging his accounting skills to win three cold beers apiece for his buddies after a day of hard labor. When the Bible-thumping warden (Bob Gunton) starts exploiting prison workers for fat contracts and kickbacks on the outside, he brings in Andy to cook the books, which earns him and his friends more favorable treatment but poses the obvious risk of making him an important cog to an huge, illegal operation. He gets the resources for his pet project to expand the prison library, but unusually terrible hardships lurk around the corner.“Get busy living or get busy dying” is one quotable line from The Shawshank Redemption. “There are places in this world that aren’t made out of stone” is another. At times the film can seem like the foundation of a new religious movement, with Andy as the quietly confident philosophizer telling his fellow inmates – and his captives in the audience – about an inner spirit that transcends the cruel uncertainty of the outside world. This is how he survives a gang of prison rapists or a month in solitary confinement, and it’s how you can survive the setbacks and disappointments of everyday life. It’s right there on the movie poster: “Hope can set you free.”View image in fullscreenA more tough-minded film might have stopped there. After all, the likeliest outcome for both Andy and Red is that they serve their sentences in full and become institutionalized like their elderly friend Brooks who doesn’t know how to handle parole after 50 years. What’s the point of nurturing “something inside” the warden and his thugs can’t touch if achieving actual freedom becomes a possibility? That might give The Shawshank Redemption a more satisfying, A+ CinemaScore payoff but minimizes the power of guys like Andy and Red learning to define hope and liberation from behind cold iron bars.Still, it’s hard to deny the rousing satisfaction of the film’s payoff or the deft chiseling of the plot and characterization that make it possible. Even in 1994, mainstream productions with the sturdy craft of The Shawshank Redemption were getting more difficult to find, and they’re virtually impossible three decades later, when mid-budgeted period pieces are stuck in no man’s land. There haven’t been many films since with a kinship quite as affecting as that between Andy and Red, who strive to make the best of a bad situation, which is what friends often have to do for each other. What they don’t have is a writer to make the situation go away.
