The F.D. Campbell Memorial Library in North Beaver Township recently set up and planted a “citizen science” garden.
Library director Amanda Musko said this is part of a library initiative to bring more science programs to patrons of all ages.
“It is a way to get people involved with science at all aspects,” Musko said.
It is through a Spotty Rain Campaign Grant from Oklahoma State University.
Volunteers assisted Penn State Master Gardners this month to set up the garden.
Once finished, patrons will be able to walk through the garden and read information about the plants in it. More plants will be added in the spring.
Members of the western Pennsylvania area chapter of Wild Ones, a non-profit environmental education and advocacy organization, will take care of the garden.
“It’s going to be a great community-involved garden,” Musko said.
The library has used the grant to hold different science programs, such as bird-watching, learning about pollinators and building bug houses.
Musko said the library reached out to the Lawrence County Conservation District to get a rain gauge.
The library will host a presentation from author Roslyn Torella at 1 p.m. Nov. 30.
The author of “Lowellville, Ohio: Murder, Mayhem and More,” she will discuss the Ohio village’s history and connection to Lawrence County, such as Black Hand and Quaker Town.
