That discoveries in software won the Nobel Prize in physics & chemistry is reason to highlight industry’s bid to move towards ‘closed systems’. It goes against how the online world came to be
Since there is no Nobel Prize in computer science, the physics and chemistry prizes have been awarded this year for discoveries in software. Physical science and software are now no longer distinguishable, as mathematics and our ability to understand the universe have been since Newton.
We do not debate whether science and mathematics should be ‘open’ or ‘closed’. We do not highly remunerate smooth talkers to proclaim the value of ‘open standards’ for closed science, or propose licensing schemes for the use of mathematics. Yet, there are growing efforts to change the rules when it comes to software.
