Apple Valley High School was represented by five students from its Animal Science Pathway program at the National Future Farmers of America Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana last weekend.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of AVHS FFA alumni Lawson Secord, class of 2024, who was one of only four students in the nation competing for the prestigious Proficiency Award in Sheep Production.
The student representation marked an exciting milestone for the Apple Valley program, the high school said, which was represented on the national stage for the first time in several years.
Proficiency Award in Sheep Production
This highly competitive award recognizes excellence in sheep production and management, and Secord’s achievement has been years in the making, Apple Valley High School officials said.
Secord’s opportunity to compete at the national level came after winning first place at the California State FFA Convention in April.
According to the National FFA Organization, to qualify for the FFA Sheep Proficiency Award at the national level, a member must demonstrate exceptional skills in raising and managing sheep through their supervised agricultural experience.
This includes detailed records on production practices, flock health management, genetics selection, marketing strategies, financial accountability, and a clear understanding of industry standards, all showcased through a comprehensive application highlighting their achievements in sheep production.
Secord did not bring the title back to Apple Valley but his efforts are nevertheless celebrated in the community.
Lawson Secord’s road to FFA nationals
Secord, who is currently attending Fresno State and majoring in Animal Science with a specialization in Pre-Veterinary studies, began his sheep production project well before high school. His dedication and hard work over the years have culminated in the incredible opportunity to compete for top honors on a national stage.
Jennifer Pierson, Apple Valley High School’s agriculture teacher, joined him at the competition. She has been instrumental in guiding the FFA program in her second year at the school and her mentorship has been pivotal to the success of both Secord and the Animal Science Pathway students.
“We are incredibly proud to have our students and alumni representing Apple Valley High School at such a prestigious event,” said Gretchen Peratt, CTE Coordinator at the high school. “Lawson’s accomplishments, being one of four in the nation, and the hard work of our FFA student officer team, reflect the strength of our Animal Science Pathway and the dedication of our staff and students.”
