Meet woman who was bed-ridden due to accident at 24, took loan of Rs 10000000 to start business, now worth Rs…

Running a food business, however, has come with its challenges. Kainaz acknowledged the difficulties of stepping back and allowing a professional team to manage operations.Kainaz Messman Harchandrai, co-founder of Theobroma, a renowned bakery chain, encountered a life-altering experience at age 24. A trained pastry chef, her career took an unexpected turn after a severe accident left her confined to bed rest. Having studied at the Institute of Hotel Management in Mumbai and the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development in Delhi, Kainaz previously worked at Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur. Reflecting on that difficult time, she shared, “I loved my job, and being told I couldn’t continue as a chef was devastating because it required long hours on my feet.” Despite this setback, Kainaz and her sister, Tina Messman Wykes, pursued their shared dream, founding Theobroma in 2004.

To launch their venture, the sisters borrowed Rs 1 crore from their father, who had only one request: instead of repaying the loan, they should use the funds for a cause he supported. Almost 20 years later, Theobroma has blossomed into a beloved brand, with 78 outlets across major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, NCR, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

By the fiscal year 2021, Theobroma reported a remarkable revenue of Rs 121 crore, with plans to double in the near future. Kainaz reminisced about the early days, saying, “We only made what we loved to eat and promised to do it well and keep things simple. Our business has evolved over time, but we didn’t have a detailed plan when we started.”

Running a food business, however, has come with its challenges. Kainaz acknowledged the difficulties of stepping back and allowing a professional team to manage operations. Despite these hurdles, she finds fulfillment in creating a brand that resonates deeply with loyal customers.

How AI tools can help you build a business while working full-time

Starting a business while working a full-time job is challenging. Both your time and your resources are limited, which means you need to manage them properly in order to stay organized and productive. Over the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) tools have emerged as powerful resources that can make this entrepreneurial balancing act more manageable, allowing side hustlers to manage their ventures efficiently alongside their day jobs. Here’s a look at just some of the ways AI can help you maximize productivity and simplify tasks so that you can manage a side hustle more efficiently.Automate repetitive tasksImplementing AI tools can be particularly useful for repetitive tasks. Tools such as Zapier and IFTTT allow you to automate everything from social media posts to customer emails. Other AI-powered customer support platforms such as chatbot services can handle customer inquiries while you’re at your 9-5. This way, your customers receive consistent communications from your business, even if you’re not readily available. Efficiently track tasksAI-powered project management tools such as Trello, Notion, and Forecast have smart automation capabilities that can remind you of deadlines, suggest which tasks to prioritize, and automate project updates. This frees up your time to focus on what matters most in your side hustle, while minimizing task overload. Create content for social mediaIf your side hustle depends on social media, creating engaging content on a regular basis can be challenging and time-consuming. AI tools like Canva can give you automated design suggestions to accompany your post captions, while tools like ChatGPT and Jasper AI can help generate post ideas, captions, and even longer content like blog posts. These tools can even help you to create ad copy that is tailored for your business and target audience.

Optimize marketing and customer targetingYou can leverage AI to help optimize your marketing strategies through advanced data analysis and predictive analytics. This means you’ll end up reaching the right audience without a lot of guesswork. Platforms like Google Analytics and Meta Ads use AI to analyze customer behavior, preferences, and trends, giving entrepreneurs insights that would otherwise take hours to sort through the old fashioned way. Financial managementFinancial management is important for any business, but especially for side hustlers who have to be smart about their cash flow. Tools such as QuickBooks and Xero offer AI-driven insights, automating bookkeeping, expense tracking, and generating cash flow forecasts. All this means you’re able to stay on top of finances without spending hours in spreadsheets or having to pay a professional to do the work. Enhance customer engagementMaintaining strong customer relationships is important for establishing and growing your side hustle, especially if your business is in a competitive market. AI-enabled customer relationship management (CRM) tools like HubSpot and Salesforce can manage customer interactions by sending automated follow-ups, managing email lists, and even helping segment customers based on their engagement level. Competitor and market analysisHaving a solid understanding of your competitors and market trends is important for putting together your business strategy, but is a time-consuming task. AI-powered tools such as Crayon and SEMrush can automatically monitor your competitors, giving you insights into their strategies, pricing, product offerings, and marketing tactics. Website optimization and SEO Having an optimized website that ranks in search results can help your business to attract new customers. AI-powered tools like Surfer SEO, Clearscope, and Yoast provide you with keyword and SEO recommendations, and can even analyze your content quality to improve your website’s visibility without the need to spend hours on SEO research. Optimizing your time managementUnfortunately, time is a highly limited resource when you’re working a full-time job and running a business on the side. AI-powered scheduling tools such as Calendar and Google Calendar can help you to prioritize tasks, block out time, and sync schedules across multiple devices. These tools can even look at your availability, and then suggest the best times for meetings. You can even set them up to book appointments automatically based on preset criteria.

How AI is revolutionizing time management for entrepreneurs and small business owners

For small business owners, time is one of the most valuable – and limited – resources. Running a business often means juggling multiple tasks, from customer relations to finances, marketing to production, and about 101 other things. Fortunately, recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing time management, allowing small business owners to automate tasks, streamline workflows, and reclaim valuable time. Here’s a closer look at how AI is transforming the way small business owners and solopreneuers manage their time.Automating routine tasks to reduce daily workloadOne of the biggest time-sucks when running a business is completing routine, repetitive tasks. AI tools like Microsoft Co-Pilot and Zapier excel at automating these tasks, from scheduling emails and posting on social media to taking care of data entry and generating reports. By leaving the repetitive tasks to the robots, you can free up hours of your time to focus on the strategic aspects of your business. For example, Microsoft Co-Pilot can automatically draft replies to common customer emails, as well as integrate with your calendar. The AI can take a look and suggest meeting times, draft agenda points, and create follow-up tasks discussed in meetings, saving you from having to worry about every detail.AI-enhanced project management for task prioritizationPrioritizing tasks effectively can be challenging, especially for small business owners juggling several projects at once. AI-enhanced project management tools such as Asana, Trello, and Monday.com use machine learning to analyze past data and project statuses to recommend the best order for completing tasks.  For instance, in Asana, AI can analyze your tasks and deadlines to suggest the best order to complete them. This ensures that the most urgent and impactful tasks are completed first. This intelligent prioritization takes the guesswork out of what to do next and reduces the mental fatigue of running your business.

Improving decision-making with AI-driven data insightsSmall business owners often need to make quick, data-informed decisions. However, analyzing data manually can take hours, especially if you don’t have a dedicated analytics team. Tools like Microsoft Power BI and Tableau use AI to process large datasets, generate insights, and visually present trends. With AI-generated recommendations, business owners can make more informed decisions in less time.Boosting communication efficiency with AI-powered assistantsAI assistants like Microsoft Co-Pilot, Google Assistant, and other virtual agents can handle a range of communication tasks, from responding to emails to scheduling meetings. They can even handle basic customer service queries. AI tools are great for these tasks as they can respond quickly, work around the clock, and ensure nothing slips through the cracks. With AI handling scheduling requests and reminders, business owners are less likely to miss important meetings or deadlines.Streamlining finances with AI in bookkeeping and expense managementFinancial management is an important part of running a business, but it’s also complicated and time-consuming – especially if you don’t have a financial background. AI-powered tools like QuickBooks and FreshBooks streamline the bookkeeping process by automating tasks like expense categorization and cash flow tracking. For example, QuickBooks can automatically categorize transactions or alert you when cash flow dips below a certain threshold. It can also generate and send invoices based on recurring payments. Simplifying customer relationship management (CRM)Customer relationship management (CRM) is important for business growth, but keeping track of customer interactions and feedback can be overwhelming. AI-powered CRM tools like HubSpot and Salesforce offer intelligent insights into customer behavior, automate follow-ups, and recommend the best times and methods to reach out, so you can nurture relationships more efficiently. These recommendations can drive customer engagement without the need for hours of manual CRM management.Enhancing marketing with AI for targeted and efficient campaignsBuilding and managing marketing campaigns requires creativity and time. AI tools like Jasper, Canva, and Hootsuite can streamline the marketing process by generating content ideas, designing on-brand visuals, and automating social media posting. Additionally, the AI analytics within these tools give you insights into campaign performance, so you know which ads and posts resonate most with your target audience.Enhancing team collaboration and productivityFor small business owners managing remote teams or freelancers, collaboration can be a challenge. AI-driven platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams streamline communication by automating reminders, assigning tasks, and integrating with other business tools, ensuring that everyone stays aligned without the need for constant check-ins.

GARDEN GUIDE: Notes from the Garden Lab: Contributions to science from the Pollinator Haven Garden

I have always taken the philosophy that gardens are living classrooms, full of lessons we can learn if we can just spare a few moments to stop and observe what it is trying to tell us. You can see how plants grow, what insects visit and when, how the weather affected the timing of things, and you can be humbled by how each day is different. Even though no day is the same, there is still a wealth of knowledge and data that we can get from our gardens and the Pollinator Haven Garden behind the McSwain Center off Tramway Road is no different. We’d like to share what we’ve found with you!Garden Management Philosophy

Porn, the science of addiction and when viewing it becomes a problem

There’s no denying that the porn business is booming. One analysis shows that in 2023, the adult entertainment market was valued at more than $172 billion – with its growth expected to reach close to $250 billion by 2030. The industry has become so prevalent that, of the 40 most visited websites worldwide, five of them are adult sites. And while many individuals and couples enjoy pornography, for some, it can become disruptive to their life in a similar way that alcohol consumption can become a problem. Here’s how to know if viewing porn is disrupting your life and how to stop viewing it if you feel it has become a problem. What does a porn addiction look like?Porn use can become a problem the way any activity or behavior becomes an issue if done in excess. “Any behavior which has become compulsive or lacking in impulse control can have negative effects on a person’s life whether in personal distress or as interference in social, interpersonal or occupational functioning,” says Eli Coleman, a professor emeritus in the department of family medicine and community health at the University of Minnesota Medical School. And pornography can bring an added layer of frustration, he says, because it’s sometimes accompanied “by moral incongruence, conflict with religious values, or conflict between couples in terms of their own value systems.” Signs of problematic porn use include “persistent consumption of porn despite negative consequences such as interference with work, romantic relationships, friendships, or adversely impacting a person’s health,” explains Rory Reid, a sexual health research psychologist at the UCLA department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences. For example, he says he’s had patients who have lost their jobs because they continued to look at porn in the workplace despite multiple warnings from supervisors. Other times it has caused relationship strain or dissatisfaction. “Some patients also report that they objectify women or men rather than see them as human beings and attribute doing so to their viewing pornography,” he adds. Other signs that porn use may have become problematic include neglecting personal hygiene or care, looking at it in inappropriate places such as at school, a sex life that is no longer fulfilling, or not being able to stop watching it despite wanting to. Is porn addictive? These and other indicators demonstrate how porn can become not only problematic, but also habit forming – though calling it an “addiction” is “an area of substantial, protracted controversy and debate” among behavioral psychologists, explains David Ley, a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist based in New Mexico. One reason for the disagreement is that it’s known that porn doesn’t affect the brain or body the same way alcohol or drugs do. “An alcoholic going cold turkey can have seizures and die because their brain has become physiologically dependent on the alcohol,” explains Ley, “but no one has ever had seizures or died from not getting to watch porn when they want to.” At the same time, porn can become a compulsive sexual behavior akin to someone feeling like they can’t stop eating or developing any type of eating disorder. “Like eating, sexual behavior is a basic appetitive drive that can become dysregulated,” says Reid. Pornography use can also be considered addictive the way gambling can be. “Gambling disorder has been classified as an addictive disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, but the jury of science is still deliberating whether pornography problems should be classified as an addictive disorder,” says Reid. Still, he says the World Health Organization has already created a diagnostic classification for “Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder” – which can include pornography use and may evolve into categorizing porn as an addiction, he explains. Regardless of whether that happens or not, “many patients do seek help from healthcare providers citing an inability to reduce, stop, or control their use of porn – and these individuals report that their behavior feels like an addiction to them,” Reid explains. How to stop porn addictionSuch individuals can get help a number of ways that most commonly include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) – two forms of psychotherapy that are overseen by a trained professional. “It is important for people who are concerned about their pornography behavior to seek assessment from someone who has specialized training in assessing and diagnosing sexual disorders,” says Coleman.Reid explains that CBT is helpful by challenging the “irrational thoughts related to porn use,” and that ACT can help patients take action in their desires to stop. He says that several studies have also found that mindfulness meditation can also be useful in helping patients “cope with cravings, stress, and reducing impulsive urges to use porn.”Other common advice for putting an end to a porn problem include avoiding places or situations that commonly trigger the desire, diminishing your ease of access by setting internet filters on your phone, tablet or computer, or by seeking help from a trusted friend who can act as a sponsor of sorts the way Alcoholics Anonymous recommends to its members. No matter which avenue you pursue, Coleman says it’s essential not to shame yourself and to develop self-compassion as you work through your goals and progress. “Multiple unsuccessful attempts to reduce or stop a pornography problem can be discouraging,” echoes Reid, “but such attempts also reflect perseverance and persistence to change.” In such cases, he says, hope, healing, and progress can still occur. “Most people don’t develop a pornography problem overnight and overcoming a pornography problem can also take time,” he explains. “Professional help from a knowledgeable therapist who can assist you in cultivating realistic goals along with a support community can be invaluable in your journey to overcome a pornography problem.”

Travel blues of a Brit in post Brexit world

Queues at the island’s airports can be staggering at times. Add to that the relatively new complications of having a UK passport and how much more complicated it is going to get and the prospect of going anywhere can become dauntingBy Philippa TracyAs a Brit abroad, you know you have a reputation for upsetting the locals. You may never have been involved in a drunken brawl. But even so, fair enough – collective responsibility. Inappropriate loudness, binge-drinking and Napa shagathons may not be your thing; but also fair enough. We now have another stick to be beaten with: Brexit. Every time I question an immigration officer stamping my passport at Larnaca airport, despite the fact that I insist on proudly showing my residence card, they shout “Brexit” at me. We didn’t all vote for it; I’m just saying. I’m not taking collective responsibility for that one. And I thought they weren’t even supposed to stamp third-country passports of residents?

Travelling in and out of Cyprus is not always a pleasant experience. And it is not just because I am a Brit in a post-Brexit world; the procedures are just not transparent. Someone should really explain the rules. For a start, why do you have to scan your passport? Do you, in fact, have to scan your passport? I observed the other day that some people just don’t bother. Whenever I do it, I am never sure if I will get a big fat X on the picture of my face or not. And when I do, what does it even mean? I got one last week. The immigration officer refused to look at me or to explain why it was there; he kept his eyes fixed on his computer, checking who knows what for a very long time. I wish someone would explain. But nobody ever does.

Apparently the transport ministry is confident that passengers at Larnaca and Paphos airports are receiving the high-level of service it is committed to and that it monitors closely. According to a statement issued by the ministry at the end of September, and in response to “media reports over Larnaca airport facing increasing complaints from passengers about long queues,” security checks generally take less than 10 minutes. Except every time I am travelling, it seems. I can’t blame this entirely on Brexit as no one particular queue is ever longer than any other. Although, additional time spent standing in front of an immigration officer, investigating the X on my passport print out, literally made me feel like a criminal. And you can feel the heat of irritation coming off the people in the queue behind who just want to finish their journey, get their luggage and get out of the airport.

As far back as November last year, I spent 45 minutes in a security queue to leave Larnaca at 6am on a Wednesday morning. Who’d have thought? I should have paid the €6 to fast track through. I nearly missed my plane. But I have learnt my lesson. Staffing challenges? Maybe? It certainly seemed that way, and judging by recent comments on social media, as well as my own experience, things have not improved much. But the queues are only part of the problem. Brexit is a bigger problem, for the Brits at least. Understanding the ever-changing travel rules is a minefield for which some sort of background in travel law is a definite advantage. Especially when the visa waiver programme, ETIAS, (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is introduced next year.

The Etias is likely to make travellinig worse

If you don’t have an EU passport, you need to pay attention before you travel. Already, you need to have at least three months left on your passport and it can’t be older than 10 years. In other words, the date of issue must be less than 10 years since the date of entry to Cyprus, otherwise immigration can turn you back. (In the past, the UK passport office used to add on unused time from old passports to new ones when renewed early). Pointless now. Post-Brexit, Brits are currently third-country nationals in Cyprus and constantly reminded of it. You can visit and stay in Cyprus without a visa for up to 90 days in every 180 days, assuming you have the right travel documents. That is regardless of how many trips in and out that you make, (and it doesn’t affect your time in the Schengen area – also 90 days). If you want to stay longer, it starts getting complicated. Are any Brexit voting Brits out there feeling any buyer’s remorse yet? I hope so!

On a positive note, a family member came to stay recently. He stayed for the full 90 days that Brits are allowed visa free. He booked a flight to leave at the 11th hour, literally, at 11.30pm on the 90th day. (That’s Millennials for you!) Having gone through security, the flight was then cancelled and he had to queue for a good half an hour to come back in through security. After midnight and it was still a lot longer than 10 minutes. Again, I’m just saying. However, maybe because it was late, nobody in immigration even questioned why he had gone out on day 90 and come back in a couple of hours later on day 91. He then got a flight out first thing the next morning and nobody batted an eyelid at three trips through passport control in 24 hours and flitting in and out of the country after 90 days, flagrantly contradicting the rules. Although admittedly, not entirely his fault. It’s a good thing the digital Entry/Exit system (EES) is not being introduced in Cyprus; they will be sticking to the good old passport stamping system.

However, the rules may become more transparent and consistently implemented when the ETIAS system is introduced next year. These rules are designed to improve border security. ETIAS means that those who currently travel to EU countries like Cyprus or the Schengen area without a visa, like Brits, will need an ETIAS travel authorisation from next year. It will be an online application that will cost less than €10 and should be approved within minutes. (In theory). However, those Brits who are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement, will not need an ETIAS. Beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement, are basically those Brits living in Cyprus who have a residence permit granted on the basis of residency prior to January 1, 2021.

And what is a residence permit, I hear you ask? Well, there are different types. I know because of the many hours I have spent in the Immigration Office Nicosia. It has also been endlessly discussed at my book group, so I am fully aware of the hierarchy of different residency rights. The gold standard of residency rights is applying for a Cyprus passport, of course. If you’ve been married to a Cypriot as long as some of my friends have, why wouldn’t you? Although you might wonder about the complexities of the legal status of dual citizens and having to answer to two governments instead of one. And let’s not even go there with how long it might take to actually get a Cyprus passport. That aside I have friends with residency based on Article 18(4) of the Withdrawal Act and those with the lowest level of residency: temporary residency, including as a third-country national Cyprus spouse.

Try applying for residency now as a post-Brexit Brit. If you are not able to demonstrate that you were here before the cut-off point of January 1, 2021, the temporary residency visa you’ll get based on having a Cypriot spouse gives you very few rights in terms of living in Cyprus and seems to leave you totally dependent on your spouse. Regardless of how long you’ve been married. As I said to a friend, after 30 years of marriage, most women don’t seem to get a great deal. Couple that with Brexit and welcome back to the 1950s, Brexit style. And when travelling, the “Brexit” shaming is blatantly gleeful at times. Do they really hate us? Maybe not, but sometimes it feels that way! They do at least let us use the EU passport lanes.

Travel with Mandy offers personalized travel planning services

With the internet making it easier to book flights and accommodations, you might think that travel agents are a thing of the past. But statistics show the opposite.According to an August article in U.S. News and World Report and a survey taken at the end of 2023, millennials and Gen Z are behind the trend to favor traditional travel adviser services. A record 47% of those in that age group say they are using or plan to use in-person or online travel agents to book vacations. The article said travel agents, with their knowledge of the industry, can often save a traveler money. And it’s hard to dispute the benefits of having someone else responsible for handling all of the details of the itinerary. In fact, as time-consuming and tedious as it can be for most travelers, there are people like Mandy McKenna of Little Chute who love doing it. Just over a year ago, she started Travel with Mandy, a personalized travel planning service. And although she has had to supplement her income by working at various jobs during the startup phase, she’s ready to make the business her full-time profession.“After graduating from travel school in 1997, it took me a few years to get into the industry,” she said. “I worked in car rentals and then at odd jobs before getting into a travel agency where I worked for more than 25 years. About 10 years ago, I started thinking that maybe I could do this on my own someday.”It was in 2023 when she said she hit a fork in the road that had her thinking that the time might be right.“I thought, ‘I’m going to do travel. I can do my own thing. Right or wrong, I can do this,’” she said.It was as much of a personal decision as it was a business one. McKenna said she fell in love with travel when she visited the Bahamas with friends at age 17. When she returned home and excitedly told her mom about the trip, her mom suggested that she pursue a career in travel. There have been dramatic changes since that first job when reservations were made by telephone and tickets were handwritten. There was no internet to research and contacts were made directly with vendors.“Now we have the world at our fingertips,” she said. That makes her job easier, but initially caused concern. She said, “Agencies are now on an upward climb. It was a scare for a while because it seemed like people would think it was easier to make their own reservations and agencies would be unneeded, but the sector is rebounding. People are seeing the advantage of having a professional plan the details; they find value and comfort knowing that someone is taking care of them.”Once McKenna decided to launch the business. it didn’t take long to start putting the pieces together. She formed an LLC, selected a name, obtained necessary permits, and created a website. But she soon realized that even though she had extensive experience and connections in the industry, she also needed to learn more about business. That led her to the E-Seed Express Entrepreneurial Training Series at the Venture Center at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton. The course, led by Amy Pietsch, Venture Center director, focuses on the basics of starting and running a business. Classes are taught by experienced business people, and McKenna found it to be very helpful. She said, “I recommend it to anyone and everyone who is thinking of starting a business. This course is here to help you decide if business ownership is for you. I signed up because I knew there was a lot I needed to learn.”One of the most impactful lessons dealt with brand development. The instructor said that a business name should reflect what the business does, and McKenna realized that Travel with Mandy might give clients the impression that she leads every trip. In reality, the majority of the business consists of planning trips and selling specialized travel packages. She will have a number of tours during the year that she is part of, but her main focus is on customized planning. For clarity, McKenna may consider rebranding at a later date, but for now, her name will remain. Her slogan, “We’re here to get you there,” will not change. It is a foundational part of a marketing plan that she says is a work in progress. She has files and folders full of ideas that she’d like to implement, but she also has a business plan to finish first. The basics of creating the plan were part of the E-Seed Express training.“Amy (Pietsch) has been an amazing resource for that and she has helped provide the information I need,” McKenna said. “It’s one of my first goals to finish the plan.”In the interim, she tries to balance her to-do list with serving a growing clientele. Almost as soon as her Facebook page launched, she had people contacting her to plan trips. To provide the best options, she has a large network of travel suppliers and works with Avoya Agency, a network of 2,100 agents. She has already planned more than 100 trips, and has several “tours with Mandy” in the works. Although there are many agencies that might offer similar services, she is defining her business in terms of offering personal service.“I don’t concern myself with competition. We all have our different styles,” she said. “I keep on track by giving every client the best service I can, and concentrate on getting to know each one. I want to build a relationship. I’m not looking for one sale; I’m looking for someone who will work with me year after year.”Her strength, she says, is her passion for travel. She has a difficult time listing favorite destinations because every trip is so unique — from the history to the culture to the scenery. Whenever she is part of a trip, tours will be enhanced by hiring skilled guides who have extensive knowledge of the destination. While that will be a regular part of her tours, it will also be offered as an option for individual travelers.
