HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Students at Michigan Tech University explored career paths involving natural resources Thursday.
MTU‘s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science annually holds the ’Career Compass’ fair. This year, around 300 students attended. The fair draws in roughly 25 employers each year. According to MTU Dean David Flaspohler, there is a huge demand for employees in the natural resource field.
“It’s a great time, it’s a great employment landscape right now for our students,” Flaspohler said. “Because there’s a lot of demand for people to manage our natural resources sustainably.”
Students who attended say they have various goals for their future. One such student is Sawyer Fowler, a junior pursuing a degree in Applied Ecology and Environmental Science.
“I’m currently looking for summer opportunities, internships, and seasonal jobs,” Fowler said. “I’m hoping to go into a career in restoration. I’m really interested in wetland restoration and forest management.”
There is also Bryan Horning, an Environmental Sciences & Sustainability major.
“There’s a lot of different career opportunities for me, one of which is environmental counseling,” Horning said. “I’m interested in water quality analysis as well, so the range is just broad. It’s really nice to know that I have so many options.”
The Michigan DNR, the Wisconsin DNR and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were among the employers at the event.
