‘Chart your fart’: Calling Aussies to track flatulence for science

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, is calling on the community to track their farts, to help scientists better understand the frequency and characteristics of one of the leading gut health symptoms experienced by Australians. While passing wind is a normal bodily function, a 2021 CSIRO gut health study found over 60 percent of Australians reported experiencing what they identified as excessive flatulence, with up to 43 per cent reporting experiencing it most days.People aged 14 or older are being asked to track their flatulence for at least three days in total, using the free ‘Chart Your Fart’ phone app.Participants will track the quantity and quality of their outputs, including attributes such as stench, loudness, duration, linger and detectability.By sharing their fluffs, people will help to create a chart of what ‘normal’ wind may look like in different groups of Australians.CSIRO Research Dietitian, Megan Rebuli, said that while some can find farts embarrassing and uncomfortable, healthy bodies are meant to let them go.“Passing wind is a natural occurrence and a sign that our digestive system is working as it should, to expel excess gas that is produced from breaking down and processing the food we eat,” Ms Rebuli said.“Talking about diet often leads into discussion about the other end of eating.“Different foods, medical conditions, or even the way we chew, or swallow can have an impact on how our body processes the excess gas, leading to different smells, frequency or even volume.”The Chart Your Fart campaign is part of newly launched public-led research initiative being driven by CSIRO health and wellbeing researchers in the citizen science space.Project Lead and CSIRO Behavioural Scientist, Dr Emily Brindal, said when it comes to health and wellbeing, the community bring personal experience and observations that can better inform research.“Research is only as good as the data we have, and we want to work with as much of our diverse Australian community as we can to drive innovation in health and wellbeing research and deliver meaningful outcomes,” Dr Brindal said.“We want to showcase the potential of public-led research and ask the community to come on board with shaping our future health and wellbeing science.“We rely on the public to share their experience with us for so much of our health and wellbeing research, but we also want to hear what research the community wants us to do – it is about keeping it real and relevant, but why not have some fun too?”To take part in the Chart Your Fart campaign please register . ‘We Want to Be the Best’: NFL Quarterback Jameis Winston and Business Partner Danny Cortenraede Share Their Plan to Help Startups Win

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
If there’s one word to describe Jameis Winston, it’s passionate. Whether firing up his team by eating Ws in a pregame speech, dancing through a postgame celebration while on crutches with a torn ACL, or, most recently, venture capital investing, the 2015 NFL first-overall pick throws himself wholeheartedly into every endeavor. “The easiest part of my day-to-day is being true to who I am,” Winston says. “When I go viral, I’m just being authentically myself.”This mindset is shared by his business partner, serial entrepreneur and sports VC investor Danny Cortenraede. While most sports fans go wild for touchdowns and home runs, Cortenraede is almost giddy when discussing fan engagement solutions or data analytics. At his investment firm InStudio Ventures, Cortenraede has channeled his entrepreneurial energy into partnerships with professional athletes, including Winston, investing in sports technology, clubs and leagues, women’s sports, and youth sports. “We’re not your typical investment firm,” he says. “We’re entrepreneurs who have built companies and want to make a real impact on the sports industry.”Related: This Sports Team Owner Is Giving Full-Time Employees Bonuses Up to $66,000 Each — Here’s Why

Game plan for founder successInStudio Ventures was born from Cortenraede’s recognition of a significant issue: nearly 80% of startups fail within five years. “That was just a crazy number,” he says. It prompted him to create a more systematic approach to angel investing. His advice for aspiring entrepreneurs centers on securing substantial early-stage funding to cover the friends-and-family round, allowing founders to focus on growth rather than survival. Cortenraede stresses the importance of product-market fit, customer feedback, and key performance indicators like Net Promoter Score (NPS), customer satisfaction, and retention rates to gauge a product’s resonance with its target market. Effective cash flow management, scalability through process streamlining, and task automation are also critical. All of that is great, but ultimately, Cortenraede believes success hinges on building a resilient, adaptable team aligned with the company’s vision. Winston echoes this sentiment: “We’re all ignorant to some things, so we have to take advantage of the resources we have on our team to help elevate us.”

From classmates to teammatesBefore becoming business partners, Cortenraede and Winston were classmates in Harvard’s BEMS (Business of Entertainment, Media, and Sports) program, which Winston joined in the summer of 2023. Cortenraede went on to complete his executive MBA there. During a class break, Cortenraede seized the opportunity to introduce Winston to InStudio Ventures. Their first meeting outside of Harvard occurred in LA, with their entire families—kids included—present. “I’d already seen Danny in an intense learning environment, so I wanted to see him in an environment where he could let his hair down and be himself,” Winston says. Of that first meeting, Cortenraede says what really stood out to him wasn’t just Winston’s performance but “it was the kind of person he is.”Related: How the Tragic Death of His Childhood Best Friend Inspired NFL Running Back Latavius Murray to Do Something Big for His CommunityWhile a professional athlete and a venture capital partner bring different skills to the table, Winston believes both roles require building genuine connections. “As a quarterback, you need to mesh with everyone, from the offensive line to the defense,” he says. In business, he evaluates his partners as he would teammates, but instead of physical attributes, Winston values authenticity: “If you’re giving off genuine energy, we’ll have a great conversation that hopefully leads to a strong relationship.” He adds that he and Cortenraede may live different lives, but they share a passion for sports and a common goal — “to be the best.”Going deepWith a nine-year NFL career that earned him over $70 million, Money is no longer Winston’s primary motivation. Instead, he’s inspired by making a meaningful impact in sports, giving back to the game that has shaped his success. “My whole life, I’ve been taught to find ways to defeat my opponent schematically,” he says. Eventually, Winston realized he could apply those same skills to business. With the guidance of his manager, Winston learned the power athletes can wield by investing in technologies and media platforms that elevate both their brand and the industry as a whole — and make an impact beyond the playing field.

It’s about doing something for the youth and improving the industry.” Winston has already lept into action, establishing the Dream Forever Foundation to support disadvantaged youth. “I want to learn from the best in entrepreneurship and venture capital so I can share that knowledge with young people who aspire to grow in this space,” Winston says. “I love learning and I love inspiring others to learn.”

DICKINSON — Cassidy Adams is offering a new twist on drinks in the community. At Twist ‘N Sodas customers can choose from an extensive array of mixed-up soda flavors and other treats.“They’re called dirty sodas,” Adams said. “It’s just your everyday soda, like Pepsi, Mountain Dew, anything like that as your base. And then you add any syrups you want or creams, like vanilla cream or coconut cream.”

We sell a lot of our ‘Dirty Doctor’ and our new huckleberry.”Caffeine-free options, such as drinks with a root-beer base, are available as well.“We also do Italian sodas,” Adams said. “We also have vanilla bean frappe, white chocolate frappe, frozen hot chocolates, regular hot chocolates, as well as lemonade.”

A Utah native, Adams loved having dirty sodas as a kid. Her family moved to North Dakota for oilfield work when she was 13 and she missed the flavor variety she once enjoyed.“I’ve been up here in North Dakota for almost nine years without my soda fix,” Adams said. She decided to bring the experience to Dickinson herself. She began the adventure doing pop-up events and vendor shows to gauge interest.

“We would bring our tent and we’d pop up and we’d make drinks there, just trying to get a feel for if people liked the custom sodas and whatnot,” Adams said. “But being a stay-at-home mom, I wanted to be able to do something where I could bring my kids to work with me. And so then I was like, you know what, I’m going to do a little soda shop, because we don’t have any.”

Twist ‘N Sodas offers a play area where young children can have fun while their parents enjoy their treats. Those needing more than a drink can order something to eat from the business as well.“We do mini pancakes, and we also have mini cake bites,” Adams said. “We sell snacky foods. We have pretzel bites and stuff like that. Just quick little snacks to add with your drink.”Customers can sit comfortably at tables or on sofas or they can take advantage of the business’s delivery services. Adams said the quickest way to get your flavor fix is to place an order online and utilize curbside service.“We just bring our device out there and they tap their card and we’re like, ‘Here’s your drink, have a good day,’” she said. “We’re a family-owned business, so sometimes it’s just one of us instead of a couple of us. On the slower days, we’ll turn off delivery, but otherwise we have curbside pickup and stuff on our website even if we don’t have our delivery enabled for the day. But we always have DoorDash going.”She would like to eventually expand into a second location, ideally with the ability to have a drive-up window for maximum convenience.Twist ‘N Sodas is located at 30 Seventh Street W inside St. Joe’s Plaza. Idaho’s $7.5 Million Wildlife Overpass Making Travel Safer For Drivers, Elk And Mule Deer

People, 8,000 elk and 2,000 mule deer now travel safer along western Idaho’s Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway near Boise due to a new $7.5 million wildlife overpass, ending a legacy of frequent traffic crashes with big game.

This first wildlife overpass project by the Idaho Transportation Department saw 10 state and federal agencies overcome red tape, turf boundaries and budget issues to showcase how government can protect drivers and ensure wildlife resiliency.
State Highway 21 Wildlife Overpass at Cervidae PeakIdaho Transportation Department

The ITD project was funded through the Federal Highways Administration’s Federal Lands Access Program. ITD involved numerous stakeholders including Idaho Fish and Game, the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service, the City of Boise and the counties of Ada and Boise.

Also many private and non-governmental organizations gave money, resources and in-kind contributions to support required local funding matches.

“This project would not have happened or had success without their contributions and willingness to partner,” said Scott Rudel, ITD project manager for its first wildlife overpass.

The creation of the overpass was recognized Oct. 31 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials who honored ITD with a President’s Award for Environment and Planning.

Over the past 40 years, the mountainous area from Mileposts 17.2 to 19.6 had been the site of numerous vehicle accidents with large animals. SH-21 is a key north-south connector that also links east to west through central Idaho. That area has over 1 million vehicles passing over it annually.

This problem caused Idaho Fish and Game to issue a public service video about the wildlife overpass and the reasons why it is important. It stated that during 2022, over 1,500 vehicles crashed into wildlife in Idaho that resulted in $40 million in damages as well as injuries and deaths.
Residents and tourists driving along SH-21 mostly travel there to take advantage of federal lands for outdoor recreation. They may not realize how important that area is to wildlife. For instance, Boise River elk have no choice but to pass around traffic as they migrate from 63 to 26 miles each way to reach their summer and winter ranges. Mule deer wintering in the area live in foothills and have longer seasonal distances to walk (45 to 96 miles in each direction). For just over a month, they migrate every October-November for winter and April-May in spring.
ITD and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game had been tracking WVCs metrics using dead carcasses. The highway corridor saw people in vehicles colliding with wildlife at a rate of 50 per year, with that number rising to over 100 crashes during severe winters when mule deer and elk were forced to winter in less harsh lower elevations. Also wildlife can be hit by vehicles because some animals are attracted to chloride salts put on roads during winter, Rudel said.
No wildlife-vehicle collisions were reported at Cervidae Peak in a one-year period ending Oct. 31 on Utah State Route 21 highway section where ITD installed new fencing and the overpass, said Rudel. ITD’s project’s goal had been to lower the area crash rate by at least 80%.Mule deer dart over Idaho’s new wildlife overpass near BoiseIdaho Transportation Department
“Video and photographic use of the wildlife overpass by mule deer and elk tell the story of the reduction of WVCs [wildlife-vehicle collisions], enhanced mobility for both motorists and wildlife, while still maintaining that critical habitat and landscape connectivity that Idaho’s wildlife populations need to survive winters in the Northern Rockies,” Rudel explained.Night photo of wildlife using Idaho’s new wildlife overpassIdaho Transportation Department
To address the need for humans and wildlife to share spaces safely, he said multiple players must join, take ownership and have a vested interest in providing resources, input, money and in-kind contributions to projects like wildlife overpass projects.
“Mule deer, elk and other big game animals don’t know where one property boundary ends and where another begins. They do not know what is public versus private land. They do not know whose transportation right-of-way belongs to whom or where a city’s limits begin, and quite frankly they don’t care. They certainly do not understand about the hazardous safety and mobility issues that may arise when a motorist intercepts a mule deer or elk at 55 to 65 mph,” Rudel said.A mule deer walks past new fencing to cross a safe overpass as vehicles travel below on the highway … [+] in Idaho.Idaho Transportation Department
“This project lies within the Boise River Wildlife Management Area and is the primary winter range for 6,000 to 8,000 mule deer and 1,800-2,000 elk, which winter there each winter and traverse across SH-21 to do so,” Rudel said. “There is no other wintering range these animals can really utilize with all the development that has occurred in the Treasure Valley.”Overhead view of mule deer in Idaho using the new wildlife overpasse instead of dashing into traffic … [+] below in a situation that had existed for over 40 years.Idaho Transportation Department
The department now is seeking to extend the fencing to better guide the wildlife to the overpass crossing area, which will strengthen safety measures.
“Nobody wants to be involved in a WVC accident or incident that may cause trauma, may cause property damage, may cause impacts to their and their families and friends health and welfare, or may even cause death. At the same time, nobody wants to see large dead animals on the side of a highway or on the highway, experience the trauma of an animal suffering, or see the repercussions of losing our valuable wildlife and natural resources that do provide recreational, sustenance, social-economic and other cultural opportunities such as reconnecting with nature and spiritual reverence,” Rudel noted. The roadway where vehicles pass below Idaho’s new wildlife overpass. This place used to be a deadly … [+] site for mule deer, elk and people due to vehicle collisions with wildlife trying to cross the road.Idaho Transportation Department
After his experiences leading the wildlife overpass, Rudel said he wonders who should really shoulder the funding for these important projects.
“Should local land-use agencies foot the bill since they drive growth and development decisions? Should federal lands management agencies foot the bill since the habitat many of these animals live on is primarily federal lands for a good portion of the year? Should wildlife management and resource agencies foot the bill since they are responsible for managing populations and their size, numbers and other dynamics? Should DOTs and transportation agencies foot the bill because they manage our highways/roads and base projects on safety and accident criteria including property damage, injury statistics, and deaths as well as other transportation assets?” he pondered. “How do states or our federal government, Congress and the forthcoming Executive Administration feel about these issues and is it important issue for them?”
Despite the numerous hurdles and bureaucracy, ITD’s wildlife overpass project demonstrates what can be accomplished to improve the quality of lives for people and wildlife using technology, measuring effectiveness and investing in a better future for all.An unexpected fox travels at night over Idaho’s new wildlife overpass to improve traffic safety and … [+] wildlife resilienceIdaho Transportation Deparment
At the same time, this project highlights a complicated pathway that state transportation departments can explore and invest in to make travel safer, save lives and mitigate negative consequences that traffic can bring to wildlife.

Panel calls for 1 million more Chinese tourists

By Shelley Shan / Staff reporter

The Executive Yuan should allow at least 1 million Chinese tourists to visit Taiwan per year to boost tourism revenue and maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait, experts said yesterday in a panel discussion hosted by the National Policy Foundation. Taiwanese made 11.8 million trips abroad last year, with total travel expenditure exceeding NT$713.4 billion (US$21.93 billion), Tourism Administration data showed.By contrast, international travelers made only 6.48 million visits to Taiwan last year, spending an estimated NT$269.8 billion, the data showed.
