CHICAGO (WGEM) – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., did not mince words Friday when talking about President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to head the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Speaking to the press Friday in Chicago, Illinois’ senior senator said Trump’s choice, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is totally unqualified for the job.
Kennedy rose to prominence in the health world as an anti-vaccine activist, promoting the debunked theory that childhood vaccines cause autism.
Kennedy, who endorsed Trump after ending his own 2024 presidential bid, has called for the U.S. to remove fluoride from drinking water and vows to take on food and pharmaceutical companies.
“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. may be qualified in some areas, he is totally unqualified for this job,” Durbin said. “He has engaged in quack science and crazy theories right and left, and drawn a lot of attention because of it. I fear this man is going to bring those same ideas to the administration of this life and death agency.”
Durbin said the HHS Secretary is one of the most important and sensitive appointments a president can make, as the agency oversees other federal health agencies including the National Institutes of Health, FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
