LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville nonprofit launched a medical education program this week with Jefferson County Public Schools.
Future Healers Kiddos Medical program is an educational initiative that introduces children to medicine and science as a way to provide opportunity and learning to build upon their future.
Christopher 2X’s Game Changers has devoted resources to supporting children impacted by gun violence with the Future Healers program, which is a partnership between the Game Changers, UofL Hospital’s Trauma Institute and students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to help Louisville children who have been impacted by violence in their neighborhoods to build a better future.
On Wednesday, three schools in Louisville started the classroom version of the health sciences curriculum. Whitney M. Young Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary and Foster Traditional Academy launched the new program.
“Having the kids experience the program within a classroom setting in JCPS is a real highlight for the Future Healer program’s growth,” Christopher 2X said in a news release. “Feeling the energy in the classrooms was so special because it allowed the students to see the fun things our Future Healers kiddos are doing. We are so excited that kids outside our initial program get to join the Future Healers Kiddos Medical Network.”
Earlier this year, the nonprofit’s program released the Future Healers Journey to Wellness Personal Journal. It’s a 100-page book that blends fun and learning activities for a unique resource that focuses on wellness and health sciences. University of Louisville School of Medicine students authored the book.
“The students’ excitement was undeniable,” Dr. Keith Miller, a surgeon at UofL, said in a news release. “You could feel a new connection to the medical world.”
The students’ lessons come from the medical journal and they’ll learn curriculum taught by University of Louisville medical students and members of University of Louisville’s Department of Surgery.
The program for children ages 4-to-13 expanded to Nashville. The Future Healers program are now working with doctors from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and nonprofit Stronger Than My Father to help form The Future is NOW (Non-violent Options Win).
In August, the Future Healers program kicked off its fourth year of instruction in Louisville.
