A high-level delegation from Germany has visited Sci-Tech Daresbury to strengthen ties between the science and innovation campus and Life Sciences Nord, one of Europe’s leading industrial networks. The Hamburg-based visitors toured the site and discussed potential collaborations with the northern Germany life science hub, which comprises around 500 companies, research institutions, and medtech, biotech, and pharmaceutical industries.
This visit was part of a broader tour of the Liverpool City Region, focusing on trade, culture, tourism, innovation, and life sciences, as the city region seeks to secure a stronger foothold in the UK’s second-largest export market. The trip builds upon last year’s Mayoral mission to the north German city state, home to approximately 2.5 million people.
Katherine Fairclough, chief executive of the Liverpool City Region, commented: “We are very pleased to welcome a high-level delegation from Hamburg to the city region. This follows on from our very successful Mayoral visit to Hamburg last year and is focused on developing closer links between us. This visit will cement our partnership, promote and deliver joint projects with real and tangible benefits for our two cities, in areas as diverse as tourism, health and life sciences and academic collaboration.”
A spokesperson highlighted that last year’s mayoral mission to Hamburg bolstered trade and investment relations, connecting German businesses and trade associations with the Liverpool City Region. Discussions were held on public transport and urban mobility, decarbonisation, green hydrogen, and Hamburg’s approach to climate change, biodiversity, and net zero.
The city region’s innovative new visitor economy partnership, established this year to enhance the tourism sector through strategic partnerships and marketing initiatives, also presented. Conversations were also held about the city region potentially participating in Hamburg’s annual Hafengeburtstag festival, a significant international maritime event which celebrated the port’s 835th birthday this year.
