Two Cork students have been chosen out of hundreds across Ireland to win major science awards, including a scholarship from tech giant Google.
Moncia Alberti and Prayag Ratheeshbabu were awarded big prizes over the past week. Previous winners of both awards have gone on to do big things in their respective fields, and these two future scientists will be no exception.
University College Cork student Monica is one of twelve recipients of the 2024 Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Computer Science. She is an incoming software engineer intern at the Bank of America.
Through the programme, Google aims to further gender equality in the field of computer science in Ireland by encouraging women to excel in computing and technology and become active leaders and role models in the field. It is a big win, both for her and UCC.
Prayag, who is a Fifth Year student at Coláiste Chríost Rí won gold in the Irish Olympiad of Experimental Science at Dublin City University on November 9.
The prestigious science competition is for Transition Year and Fifth Year students, with one hundred young scientists competing through different rounds of experiments. Prayag brought home Gold in chemistry to Leeside.
Coláiste Chríost Rí principal Pádraig Mac An Ri personally congratulated him upon winning.
Prayag is from Kerala on the Malabar Coast of India and wants to pursue a career in medicine, genetics or biochemistry. He said that: “chemistry is the foundation of innovation!”
Both Monica and Prayag are looking forward to their bright futures in the world of science, and have made their families, schools and Cork very proud.
