Clinton County families can pick up free books for their children when they take public transportation.The Clinton County Regional Educational Service Agency has donated more than 4,000 books with the help of state grant funding.Bus drivers will be handing out the books for families to take home or read while traveling.Cindy Pline works for the agency. She says the program is going to make a big difference in the community.“We know how important early literacy is. I can’t think of anything that’s more important than helping our littlest people in our county.”The initiative is part of Michigan’s Talking is Teaching campaign.The campaign supports the importance of talking, reading and singing with children under six years old.Pline says the response from the community so far has been great.“It has been shared on Clinton County RESA social media pages, and I’ve been able to review all of the likes and the shares on that. I also had a local author reach out … interested in seeing if his book can be added to the books that are on Clinton Transit buses.”Books can be found on all 28 Clinton Transit buses.

100 Years Ago – December 1924: With radio broadcasting now firmly established as a source of news, other uses of this wireless delivery methodology are being developed and tested. In looking back at the year’s end, 1924 saw radio trialed as an educational tool, with several large universities broadcasting lectures to the masses; use of radio stations as navigational beacons for aviators; radio-enabled remote control of vehicles, with demonstrations of automobiles being guided in heavy traffic by radio waves; an (unsuccessful) attempt to communicate with our Martian neighbor when it was relatively close to Earth in August; and radio transmission of photographs from Europe to the United States. In commenting on the photo transmission application (which took nearly 30 minutes for a single picture), one trade writer commented: “When one of these pictures can be transmitted in 1/16 of a second, you may prepare yourself for radio-movies. It’s only a few steps (away) now.”
75 Years Ago – December 1949: With Cuba beginning to ignore the North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement (NARBA), the newly-formed FM Association (FMA) is urging AM broadcasters in southeastern states, and Florida, in particular, to begin transitioning to FM operations in order to overcome interference from powerful co-channeled Cuban stations. (The organization noted that moving to FM would also mitigate the natural atmospheric interference or “static” that is prevalent in this region of the country.) The group observed that such a transition from AM to FM would be easier if receiver manufacturers would guarantee the production of “reasonably-priced, high-quality FM sets in sufficient numbers to meet public demand.”
50 Years Ago – December 1974: The push for a radio receiver “all-channel” congressional bill (H.R. 8266) has “died quietly,” with an announcement from the House Rules Committee that it would only be considering emergency legislation during the remainder of its term. Failure of the bill’s passage — which would have required AM and FM reception capability on all radios — is being blamed on a variety of factors, including its introduction in a time of high inflation and reduced consumer spending power. In commenting on the failure to enact the bill, an NAB spokesperson stated: “We hope in the next session of Congress to have a much more favorable climate (for the bill), if and when inflation is brought under control.”
Even though many feared the worst, the dreaded 1999-into-2000 “Y2K” global chaos never happened. While WLW’s chief engineer, Paul Jellison, was confident that his station was immune from the feared ‘bug,’ he decided it would be fitting to transition into the new century by operating the station’s 1927 Western Electric model 7A 50 kW transmitter (with absolutely no computers or microcode attached) during the waning hours of 1999 and into the new year. 25 Years Ago – December 1999: As calendars and clocks edged closer and closer to year’s end, there were still some lingering doubts among station operators, networks and others as to whether all potential “Y2K” issues had been identified and patched. Concern came from the realization that most of the computer systems in use were designed to operate with two-digit date codes, with no consideration as to what would happen when the next millennium arrived. Fortunately, the potential problem was flagged early enough to allow computer-dependent businesses to take preventative measures (at an estimated cost of $100 billion in the U.S. alone) and very few issues were reported as the new year began.

When Junko arrives in Tokyo to find mountaineering clubs closed to women, she eventually gathers other female climbers and plots an expedition to climb Everest.Published this summer, “Ode to Grapefruit: How James Earl Jones Found His Voice,” by Kari Lavelle, illustrated by Bryan Collier, is a poignant story of how the late great actor known for his booming voice overcame a childhood stutter and came into his own. Collier is a renowned illustrator — watercolor and collage are his bread and butter — and a four-time Caldecott Honor recipient.“The Most Beautiful Winter,” by Cristina Sitja Rubio, translated by Vineet Lal. Scientists just discovered a new bee in Texas – and it’s blue

The scientific world is abuzz following the discovery of a new bee species in Texas and Oklahoma.Per a news release from the University of Oklahoma, the new species of mining bee, now known as Andrena androfovea, has been documented interacting with plants in the wild in both states.A study on the new species was recently published in the journal Ecology and Evolution.“The process of documenting bee biodiversity started centuries ago, but scientists are still discovering new species all the time,” said James Hung, OU assistant professor of biology and co-author of the paper, in a news release. Creating a new bee subgenus is rare, but it is even more uncommon when a new species is discovered, Hung said.New subgenera are typically created due to rearrangement.There are more than 1,500 species of Andrena bees in the world, making it one of the largest genera of animals in the world.

Upon sequencing the newly discovered species’ genome and comparing it to those of other bees, scientists discovered it does not fit into any of the existing 104 subgenera of Andrena. This means it is not closely related to any Andrena bees discovered thus far, making this a significant discovery.“Subgenera are groups of species that are structurally similar and closely related,” said Silar Bossert, assistant professor at Washington State University and lead author of the study. “This new species, however, is so distantly related to any other Andrena that we think it has formed its own branch on the Andrena family tree about 12.6 million years ago.”The newly discovered bee, which Hung described as “sparkly blue” in color, is the only species in the genus Andrena that has an affinity to plants in the tomato family.Hung was able to capture videos and photos of the bee using its furry abdomen and legs to gather pollen from these plants.“I observed this matte-blue-colored bee doing a handstand on the flower, sucking nectar with its tongue while scraping the flower with its hind legs and rubbing the flower with its hairy belly,” Hung said. “This is pretty unusual behavior for a member of the mining bee genus and really helps us showcase the unique evolutionary innovations of the new subgenus.”

Loeffler, 53, represented Georgia in the Senate for just over a year in 2020 and 2021, filling the seat left by the late Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., when he resigned because of health reasons. She ran in the 2020 special election for the seat but lost in a runoff election to Democrat Raphael Warnock.After the 2020 election, as Trump pushed his claims of widespread voter fraud, Loeffler repeatedly refused to acknowledge that he had lost the presidential election. NBC News reported last year that a special grand jury in Georgia that initially investigated Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results recommended indicting more than three dozen people, including 21 who weren’t charged in the Fulton County case. Loeffler was among those the panel recommended, but she was ultimately not charged. Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Zurawski and Kerry Washington presented $1 million in college scholarships to high school students from underserved communities across Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The announcement was made at The Hollywood Reporter’s 2024 Women in Entertainment breakfast gala, presented by Lifetime, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event is held in conjunction with the publication of this year’s Women in Entertainment Power 100 list.

Oscar-winning actress Lawrence kicked off the scholarship’s presentation, which were handed out to participants in THR’s mentorship program, a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. She first took a moment to express that she is “honored to share the stage” with Zurawski, one of several women suing Texas over its abortion ban after being denied abortion care after facing severe and dangerous pregnancy complications. The 2024 documentary feature film Zurawski v. State of Texas, which Lawrence produced, focuses on the lawsuit.

“Though she was forced to endure something no person should ever, she walked away from that experience with an unwavering commitment to justice and the resilience and strength, to share her experience in the hopes that other women wouldn’t suffer the same way she did,” Lawrence said. “By this definition, she and the other women in Zurawski v. Speaking directly to the mentees, she says, “I just want every single one of you to know that you are a winner. Fall Commencement at Florida Tech Set for Dec. 14

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Florida Tech will hold its Fall 2024 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Clemente Center on the university’s Melbourne campus.

Over the 9:30 a.m. ceremony for graduates from the Bisk College of Business and the College of Psychology and Liberal Arts and the 2 p.m. ceremony for graduates of the College of Engineering and Science and the College of Aeronautics, 923 students are expected to cross the stage to collect their diplomas and shake hands with President John Nicklow.

Florida Tech will bestow a total of 1,164 degrees at the ceremonies to graduates representing 61 countries and the entire contiguous United States – 48 states. Even with its amazing diversity, Florida Tech remains a key Sunshine State option for many: this fall’s graduating class includes nearly 350 Florida residents.

Maj. Gen. Timothy Sejba

Nicklow will offer welcome remarks, and the distinguished Maj. Gen. Timothy Sejba is scheduled to offer the keynote address at both ceremonies. Sejba is the commander of the Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM), which is in the process of relocating from Colorado to Patrick Space Force Base in Brevard County.

Established in 2021, STARCOM is responsible for preparing the U.S. Space Force and more than 8,600 Guardians to prevail in competition and conflict through innovative education, training, doctrine and test activities.

A 1995 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he majored in computer engineering, Maj. Gen. Sejba commissioned into the Air Force that year through his distinguished service in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He would later earn an MBA from San Jose State University.

After his first assignment at Falcon Air Force Base in Colorado, Sejba went on to serve in a wide variety of operations and acquisition leadership positions within the National Reconnaissance Office, Defense Threat Reduction Agency and U.S. Strategic Command. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2021 and Major General in 2023.

His assignments included duties as a Flight Commander, Project Manager, Executive Officer, Congressional Liaison, Squadron Commander, Group Commander, Deputy Program Director, Program Director, and Program Executive Officer.
