The Director of the Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin, Federal Ministry of Education, Engr. Ismaila Yekini, has stated ways by which dependency on foreign science equipment can be reduced.
Yekini added that foreign exchange can be reduced through the reduction of the importation of science equipment that are locally produced.
Speaking on the theme “Partnering with Stakeholders for the Repair and Maintenance of Laboratory Equipment in Nigeria,” he said that some steps, including the introduction of public-private partnerships (PPP), can help improve service delivery by science laboratory technicians.
The Director said this on Wednesday during a five-day workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Science Equipment Centre, Ijanikin, Lagos, held for science laboratory technicians at the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) headquarters in Ibadan.
Yekini stated that such workshops will help train laboratory technicians to encourage local production and repair of science equipment.
Speaking on the purpose of the program, he stated that the capacity building is aimed at improving the competence of laboratory technicians.
He further noted that the workshop is also meant to update the skills and management of the trainees and enable them to assist science teachers and students in practical sessions.
Also speaking at the event, the Director General of the Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Ibadan, Mr. Yemisi Gbadegesin, described science and technology as a cornerstone of national development.
He stressed that the functionality of science and technology in institutions, industries, and research environments depends on the availability and proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Gbadegesin, who was represented by the Director of Education, Training, and Inspection, NISLT, Mr Peter Adefisoye, noted that the workshop is crucial to address the pressing need for competent, well-trained laboratory technicians who can operate, repair, and maintain laboratory equipment.
“Through this partnership with stakeholders, we are determined to empower our laboratory technicians with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of laboratory tools and instruments.
“I commend all stakeholders, resource persons, and participants for their commitment to this initiative. Your presence here signifies a shared vision for progress and self-reliance in our scientific pursuits,” he said.
