A Fresh Start for Queensland: Red tape reduction for small and family business

JOINT STATEMENTFresh Start for Queensland: Red tape reduction for smalland family business Crisafulli Government announces Queensland Small Business Commissioner focus on red tape reduction and dispute resolution. Small and family businesses invited to provide feedback on red tape reduction opportunities. Crisafulli Government delivers on key commitment in 100 Day Plan. The Crisafulli Government has today announced the Queensland Small Business Commissioner will have new focus on reducing red tape for small and family businesses. Delivering on a key commitment of the Crisafulli Government’s 100 Day Plan, the Statement of Expectations for the Small Business Commissioner outlines the commitment to consult and collect feedback from small and family businesses to identify practical solutions to remove red tape. Another key focus will be on dispute resolution, identifying practical solutions which will in turn save small and family businesses time and money. Small and family businesses employ more than one million Queenslanders and is one of the largest employers in the state. Unfortunately, under a high red tape environment of the former Government, Queensland has experienced the highest failure rate of businesses of anywhere in the nation, with more than 30% of new small businesses failing within the first five years. Premier David Crisafulli said red tape had been weighing down business across Queensland for far too long. “These are the first steps to unleashing the true potential of small and family businesses here in Queensland,” Premier Crisafulli said. “The LNP puts small and family businesses first, and we will do all we can to ensure they can get on with running their businesses without bureaucratic red tape. “With the refocusing of the Small Business Commissioner, we can ensure these small businesses spend more time ensuring their customers are serviced rather than servicing Government.” Small and Family Business Minister Steve Minnikin said the refocus would enhance the operating environment for small and family-owned businesses to allow them to create jobs, drive innovation and provide essential goods and services that enhance all Queensland communities. “There are almost 500,000 small and family businesses employing more than one million Queenslanders and it’s time to start reducing unnecessary barriers to allow them to succeed,” Minister Minnikin said. “We want them to get on and operate in a business-friendly environment that fosters innovation and growth. We are living through challenging economic times, and we want to make sure that businesses are given the opportunity to thrive.“ Queensland Small Business Commissioner Dominique Lamb said red tape reduction was the key to unlocking the growth of many of Queensland’s small businesses and reducing their stress levels. “Small businesses are the heart of our local communities, and because of this, it is imperative that we tackle the challenges that they face,“ Ms Lamb said. “As Queensland Small Business Commissioner, I want to make sure small businesses across all of Queensland, have access to information, guidance and assistance that makes their lives easier so that they can continue to contribute to our state’s economic future. “I’ve committed to gathering insights into the small business experience when attempting to comply with regulation in Queensland and ensuring that those experiences are shared directly with the Minister and the relevant government agencies. “By working in collaboration, I am confident that we can deliver meaningful support and create great outcomes for our small business community.“ Source & references /Public Release. Fateh movie review: Sonu Sood turns desi John Wick to deliver a stylish action-packed cyber-crime thriller

Sonu Sood’s Fateh is a big-screen entertainer and deserves an audience for its crisp storytelling and stylish action sequencesread moreDirector: Sonu SoodCast: Sonu Sood, Jacqueline Fernandez, Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz, Shiv Jyoti Rajput, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Prakash Belawadi, Binnu Dhillon, Suraj Jumani, Sheeba, Akashdeep SabirSonu Sood known for playing powerful antagonist roles in films like Dabangg, Shootout At Wadala and Simmba, turned real-life messiah during the COVID-19 phase because of his humanitarian work. Now, the actor and philanthropist has donned a new hat for his biggie Fateh. Yes, Sonu has made his directorial debut with the cyber-crime thriller, which has hit the screens today. While the trailer has struck a chord with the audience, does it turn out to be a worthy affair? Let’s find out…AdvertisementFateh Singh (Sonu Sood), an ex-Indian agent from an undercover agency who does covert operations, lives a simple life in Moga, Punjab as a Dairy farm supervisor after the agency shuts down. He is very close to people in his surroundings, especially Nimrat who is his neighbour and considers her as younger sister.Nimrat runs a small mobile shop but is under stress after becoming an agent of a bank loan app as she has made her several neighbours take that loan, who are now facing unnecessary penalties and interests, which lead them to take extreme steps.Nimrat now goes to Delhi to meet the person, who runs this app but goes missing. Now, Fateh takes the responsibility to bring Nimrat home and heads to Delhi. In the capital, he comes to know about the cyber-criminals through Khushi (Jacqueline Fernandez), who are not only looting middle-class people through fake loan apps but also hampering the Indian economy. Now, Fateh has two missions – one to find Nimrat and second to end this cyber-crime. Will he succeed in achieving these two objectives? For that, you have to watch Fateh on the ‘big screen’.After leaving his mark as an actor par excellence, Sonu Sood made an impressive directorial debut. In fact, his direction looks much better than many veterans. The screenplay is engaging with a gripping narrative, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, the biggest highlight of the movie is its stylized action sequences, which are bloody gory and whistle-worthy. Action directors – Lee Whittaker, RP Yadav, Riyaz Nasir Shaikh & Habib Haji Sayed have made the movie larger than life with their brutal action sequences.AdvertisementThe background score enhances the impact and elevates the mood and the men behind them are Hans Zimmer (2-time Academy Award winner known for his composition in Hollywood films like The Lion King, Gladiator, Interstellar, Inception, Dunkirk and others) and John Stewart Eduri. The camera work is top-notch by Vincenzo Condorelli, who stylishly presents Fateh as a big-budget extravaganza with his finesse in stunts and action sequences. The editing is crisp and sharp by Yash Parikh and Chandrashekhar Prajapati, who make every frame engrossing and keep the storyline gripping with its runtime of 130 minutes.Talking about the performances, Sonu Sood takes the movie on his strong shoulders and hits it out of the park. Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Raaz are superb in their negative avatars while Jacqueline Fernandez is just average.AdvertisementOn the whole,

TTP abducts 18 Pakistani nuclear scientists; Pleads for rescue as tensions with Islamabad escalate

In a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistan Army, reports indicate that TTP militants have kidnapped 16 Pakistani nuclear scientists in an effort to coerce Islamabad into meeting their demands.
The TTP, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has released a video in which the kidnapped nuclear scientists, employed by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, are seen urgently appealing to the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In the footage, the scientists plead for their safety and call on the government to meet the terror group’s demands.

In the video, which has since gone viral on social media, a group of individuals—reportedly engineers working at the Qabul Khel Atomic Energy mining project in Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan—are seen desperately urging the Pakistani government to ensure their safety by acceding to the TTP’s demands.
In a statement, the TTP asserted that they have “detained” the nuclear engineers not to harm them, but to exert pressure on Islamabad to meet their demands. These include halting the Pakistan Army’s military offensive against TTP fighters. Various reports indicate that TTP militants have also seized a significant quantity of uranium from Pakistan’s largest uranium mine.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have surged in recent weeks, particularly after Pakistan launched a series of airstrikes against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in Afghanistan. In retaliation, the TTP has carried out multiple attacks on the Pakistani army, resulting in the deaths of several personnel, including a Major.
However, the Taliban’s Ministry of Defence contended that the airstrike also affected “Waziristani refugees,” challenging the claim that only militants were targeted. This escalation of violence has further strained relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with the Taliban issuing a warning of potential retaliation.
In December, the Pakistan-Taliban conflict saw a significant escalation when Afghan Taliban fighters launched an attack on the Pakistani Army in the Kurram area near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The assault resulted in the death of at least one Pakistani soldier and left at least nine others injured. In retaliatory fire, the Pakistan Army reported that three Taliban fighters were killed.

Pakistan’s war against TTP
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, is a coalition of various Islamist militant groups founded in 2007 by Baitullah Mehsud. An offshoot of the Afghan Taliban, the TTP shares a similar ideology with its cross-border counterpart, which is believed to have supported the TTP during the 2001–2021 conflict with the Pakistani government.
The TTP aims to resist the Pakistani state, overthrow its government, and impose Sharia law across the country. In recent months, the group has intensified its attacks on Pakistani forces, prompting accusations from Pakistan that the Afghan Taliban is sheltering these militants. However, the Afghan Taliban has denied these allegations, insisting that it is not collaborating with the TTP.

Scientists warn of leaking breast implants

Two scientists have warned that the newest generation of silicone breast implants of “often used, renowned brands and types” can very quickly transmit certain foreign molecules to the rest of the body. Women need to think carefully about opting for the implants, said plastic surgeons Rita Kappel and pathologist Evert van den Broek. They have conducted and then published their research in the British Journal of Cancer Research. They concluded that silicone breast prostheses can begin shedding particles almost immediately after placement. Up to now, it was only assumed that older breast implants, which have been in the body for years, show leaks like this or “Sweat.” Affected women then report chronic fatigue, for example. According to Kappel, replacing old implants with new ones is, therefore, not a solution. According to her, sweating continues with the new ones, and the effects add up.The scientists looked at tissue from seven women who reported no symptoms but were unhappy with their breast enlargement between 2018 and 2021. They wanted to get rid of the implants. The scientists saw that silicone molecules can occur in the surrounding connective tissue capsule and spread further within three weeks after placement. “This capsule, a natural reaction of the body, forms as a kind of covering layer around the prosthesis,” they explained. They advocate further research. “Think before you leap,” they tell candidates for implants in the meantime. “The best thing is no implant at all,” said Kappel.

Gerard Butler Filmed ‘Den Of Thieves 2′ With A “Freshly Torn ACL”

In a recent interview, actor Gerard Butler shared his challenging experience filming Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. “I made this movie with a freshly torn ACL, and it was pretty rough. But yeah… I wanted to put a ‘but’ in to make it sound positive, but it wasn’t positive; it was a nightmare and I was a whiny little bi-ch!” Butler wasn’t able to immediately undergo surgery for his injury, and had to continue filming the physically-demanding role. The action crime drama, directed by Christian Gudegast, hits theaters today, with Butler reprising his role as Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien — tracking down a heist planner played by O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Deadline)

A&P Commission hires consultant firm to search for city’s next tourism executive

(Flyer Photo/Todd Gill)FAYETTEVILLE — The city’s tourism panel on Thursday hired an outside consultant firm to aid in the search for a permanent chief executive officer to replace Molly Rawn.Advertising and Promotion Commissioners voted 6-0 to hire Winner Partners in St. Petersburg, Fla., for $60,500 to conduct a national search for a new tourism leader following Rawn’s election as mayor. Of the total, $48,000 will cover the firm’s fee and another $12,500 will be allocated for expenses related to the search. The commission decided last month to hire an outside firm to handle the search for a new chief executive officer to lead Experience Fayetteville, the city’s tourism bureau. It appointed Jennifer Walker, the chief financial officer for the agency, as interim chief executive until a permanent candidate is hired.Walker said she and Amy Stockton, director of operations for Experience Fayetteville, and Chrissy Sanderson, the commission’s chairwoman, evaluated proposals from three firms. The cost was about the same for all three, but Walker said she appreciated Winner Partners’ hands-on approach to the process and the team offered the shortest time frame to get someone selected. References also praised the firm’s work, she said. The process should take about 80 days to find a permanent chief executive, which would be around the end of March, said Tina Winner, managing partner with the firm. The $48,000 fee will be billed in three installments, she said. The first $16,000 will serve as a retainer to get the search going. To get to the next two installments, the firm will have to reach milestones, Winner said. After about 45 days, the firm will present a slate of candidates, which would qualify them for the next $16,000 installment. The final installment will be made after a candidate is accepted for the job, she said.Additionally, the firm will continue to work until the commission finds its preferred candidate, Winner said. If the person selected quits within a year, the firm will perform a replacement search at no charge.Winner described the selection process as starting locally and expanding out regionally and nationally in concentric circles. The firm will work throughout the process with Walker and Stockton, who will have access to the firm’s information on candidates.“With our process, I think that you need more than just someone flinging resumes to you,” Winner said. “We want to tell the story of the candidate, and why we feel like they’re going to be a good fit with your destination.”Winner said her team will visit the city to get a better impression of it. The three-person team will have members specializing in executive search and recruitment, destination marketing and diversity, according to a proposal sent to the commission.Although the vote was unanimous, commissioners expressed some concern with the choice. Commissioner Todd Martin said he was put off by some of the team’s comments praising the state and region as a whole, rather than qualities specific to Fayetteville. He also expressed concern with the length of time the process will take.“I want to know they can actually be an advocate for Fayetteville,” Martin said.Commissioner Elvis Moya agreed the firm’s focus will need to be on the city’s assets when recruiting candidates. However, he said he was confident Walker and Stockton will effectively communicate that point to the firm.“With Jennifer and Amy being the direct line of communication, I believe it would be a home run,” Moya said. The commission also voted 6-0 to appropriate $65,000 from the commission’s budget to cover the cost of hiring the firm. Commissioners tabled another item until Jan. 27 to adjust Walker’s salary since she became interim chief executive. The commission went into executive session for about 45 minutes before deciding to table. There is already $170,000 in this year’s budget to put toward a chief executive’s salary, according to a memo to the commission.Commissioner Katherine Kinney did not attend Thursday’s meeting, which was held virtually to accommodate for inclement weather.

UC Irvine Scientists Design Bioluminescent RNA

Irvine, Calif., Jan. 9, 2025 — RNA is the molecule that reads the genetic information stored in DNA. It’s critical for the proper functioning of cells, and in a new study published in Nature Communications, University of California, Irvine scientists have discovered a way of tagging RNA with a glowing bioluminescent molecule that allows them to track RNA in real time as it moves throughout the body. The work promises to help scientists better understand everything from the way viruses propagate to how memories form in the brain.“The first step in saying something’s going to happen in a cell – the cell is going to grow, adapt, change or anything like that – underlying all of that is RNA,” said Andrej Lupták, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at UC Irvine and one of the lead corresponding authors of the study.Until now, little was known about how and when RNA does what it does inside cells. “It turns out it’s been really quite difficult to know in living cells, and especially in living organisms, when RNA is turned on and where it goes,” said Lupták. “If you wanted to study the first 30 seconds or the first minute – nobody knows. But we provide a tool. You can now visualize it.”Viruses propagate throughout the body by infecting cells with their RNA, and if scientists can tag that viral RNA with the team’s so-called “RNA lanterns,” they can better understand the way a virus infiltrates the body’s defenses. The tag could also allow for real-time imaging of living brains with cells carrying bioluminescent RNA. RNA, explained co-lead corresponding author and UC Irvine professor of chemistry Jennifer Prescher, appears to play a key role in the formation of memories in the brain.“There’s a lot of interesting biology that’s happening at the RNA level in neurons,” said Prescher. “And being able to see early events and the transport of RNA from the cell body out to neural synapses where connections are being made to other neurons – that directly correlates with memory formation. If you have a way to watch that in real-time, that could tell you something fundamental about the brain and memory, which has been a holy grail in science for a long time.”To tag the RNA, the team used luciferase, the same enzyme that enables insects like fireflies and glow-worms to shine the way they do. Before, scientists were unable to produce the results reported by the UC Irvine team because researchers couldn’t find a way to make the luciferase molecules glow brightly enough for available camera technology to detect them. Both Prescher and Lupták credit the cross-disciplinary, collaborative research culture at UC Irvine for helping make the research possible. “We had an absolute dream team of students that were involved in this,” Prescher said, referring to fellow study authors like Lila Halbers and Kevin Ng of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Kyle Cole of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, as well as the third collaborator, Oswald Steward, the Reeve-Irvine Professor of anatomy & neurobiology and neurobiology & behavior. The study was supported by a grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation awarded to Lupták, Prescher and Steward.About the University of California, Irvine: Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation’s top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
