The Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School will remain closed until eight City of Syracuse code violations are resolved.
A code inspection as of Tuesday, January 7 found the building at 1001 Park Avenue had the following violations:
- Violation one: Removal of or tampering with equipment.
- Violation two: Carbon monoxide alarms and detectors.
- Violation three: Mechanical equipment and appliances.
- Violation four: General
- Violation five: Unsafe structures
- Violation six: Maintenance of required safeguards
- Violation seven: Building permits
- Violation eight: Structure Unfit for Human Occupancy
The charter school has been under scrutiny since a janitor was found dead inside the school cafeteria. Responding Syracuse Fire Department members detected high levels of carbon monoxide coming from the school’s kitchen.
The school claims the janitors death and the carbon monoxide were unrelated. A claim which authorities have yet to verify. Other members of the kitchen staff were taken to the hospital to be treated for CO poisoning symptoms.
Remote learning started Wednesday, after the school closed for the day after Tuesdays discovery of the janitor and CO.
