Maybe you’re also daydreaming about the coach on the sidelines. What might happen if he spent a decade secretly pining for his best friend’s off-limits twin sister only for her to show up in their small town, single for the first time in years? Would he decide now was the time to prove to her they’ve always been meant to be, and go all-out trying to win her over before she leaves again? The fictional coach in my new book, Only in Your Dreams, out Jan. 21, does just that.

Football romances give us a juicy peek into the proverbial locker room of professional sports, full of tension as characters balance their devotion to the game with their tumultuous love lives. There’s enough game-day drama for the sports lovers, swoony moments for the non-fans and (ahem) multiple types of scoring to keep you hooked from start to finish.

Here are 10 football romances that’ll have you swooning and fanning yourself through every single play.

‘The Wall of Winnipeg and Me’ by Mariana Zapata

Avon

The queen of slow-burn romances delivers a tension-filled story between a pro football star and his longtime assistant, whose relationship takes a wild turn when he shows up on her doorstep with a shocking request. I adored the way Aidan and Vanessa grow into their relationship, learning to trust and lean on each other in a way that felt incredibly real and organic.

‘The Jock’ by Tal Bauer

This story wrapped a fist around my heart from the first tentative meeting between Wes and Justin, who fall in love while studying abroad, only to come home and face the realities of their relationship. Bauer’s writing has a way of immersing you in the story, making your stomach flutter whenever the characters are together, and your heart break as they navigate the challenges of coming out faced by professional athletes.

‘Plays Well with Others’ by Lauren Blakely

This steamy romantic comedy is packed with some of my personal favorite tropes: fake dating, best friends to lovers and dating coach. The dynamic between Rachel and her football star BFF Carter was incredibly fun, their story fresh and captivating. I also loved the realistic ADHD representation in Carter.

‘Fumbled’ by Alexa Martin

There’s nothing like a second-chance romance, and this one delivers with juicy tension, secrets and years of longing between Poppy and footballer TK. I love reading about strong women in romance, and Poppy is certainly that — her resilience and love for her son, not to mention her scorching chemistry with TK, will have you rooting for her happily-ever-after from the very first page.

‘Playbook’ by Rebecca Jenshak

This fake dating romance kicks off with a unique premise and hilarious meet-cute that turns London and rookie footballer Brogan into pen pals before they take their (phony) relationship live. Their dynamic is so fun, the chemistry off the charts and if that’s not enough, the cast of side characters make up a found family that will truly warm your heart.

‘Coach’ by Devney Perry

Millie and Coach Ford had my heart in knots from the very beginning, in the sweet moment where their friendship takes a romantic turn only to get derailed when Ford receives some life-changing news. Fast forward a decade later when they reconnect as new colleagues, and you’re served a swoony workplace romance as they unpack their history and build a future together.

‘Rival Hearts’ by Maggie Rawdon

Another addictive second chance romance, this one between exes Quentin and Madison, who are forced to work together to improve Quentin’s image with fans when he joins the team as a  former rival team’s quarterback. This one is steamy, full of pining and regret over past mistakes, made even more angsty because the two come from sports dynasty families with long-standing grudges.

‘First Down’ by Grace Reilly

Avon

This college football romance is a take on the classic star athlete/tutor set-up, and will keep you entertained right through the fourth quarter. The chemistry between James and Beckett had me dying to see their relationship progress throughout the story. I loved their bond and partnership, and the way they supported each other through every challenge thrown at them.

‘The Cheat Sheet’ by Sarah Adams

Is there anything better than a best-friends-to-lovers romance? How about one where he’s a pro football player, she’s a ballerina, and they’re thrust into a fake relationship that has them thinking … what if? Bree and Nathan are the sweetest pair and so easy to root for; the pining and tension en route to their happy ending jumps right off the page.

‘The Hook Up’ by Kristen Callihan

Canary Street Press

This romance between Anna and college football star Drew is so swoony and heartfelt, even in the stages where they fight to keep their connection purely physical. Their Pretty Woman-style “no kissing” rule had me on the edge of my seat just waiting for them to break it. I also loved the authentic representation of collegiate football in this one, showcasing the work student athletes put in to be at the top of their game.

Belgian mathematician receives prestigious US science award

Belgian-American mathematician Ingrid Daubechies has been awarded the National Medal of Science in the United States. This was reported by De Tijd and confirmed by a press release from the White House on Saturday.Born in Houthalen, Limburg, Daubechies obtained a doctorate in quantum physics from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. After marrying American scientist Robert Calderbank, she decided to move to the United States, where she built her career. Daubechies has broken the glass ceiling several times in her field, including becoming the first female professor of mathematics at Princeton and president of the International Mathematical Union. The 70-year-old is now professor emeritus at Duke University in North Carolina.Compression technologyThe Belgian-American mathematician is best known for her work on ‘wavelets’, which play an important role in data compression. Wavelets are used worldwide in technologies such as medical imaging, art restoration and seismic analysis.Daubechies has received many awards during her career, both for her work on wavelets and for her initiatives to get more women into mathematics. But the Medal of Science is the most prestigious, recognising outstanding scientific contributions in various disciplines. As one of 14 recipients, Daubechies will receive her medal at an official ceremony at the White House later this year. While the winners were announced by US president Joe Biden, the Belgian will receive her award from president-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on 20 January. Ingrid Daubechies in 2013. © BELGA PHOTO AFP / TASOS KATOPODIS

Tourism at a crossroad: What Ghana’s next minister must deliver

By the time you read this, we may know who the Minister of Tourism designate is. Still, as of Friday morning as I write this, President John Dramani Mahama has yet to submit the name of his nominee for Minister of Tourism to Parliament. While the official announcement remains pending, speculation is rife across traditional and social media about who the appointee might be. Several names have been floated, and while any of them could be the eventual choice, it’s equally possible that the President will surprise everyone with an unexpected pick.Be that as it may, whoever takes up this pivotal role will face a monumental task: reviving Ghana’s tourism sector and steering it toward stability and growth. With tourism at a crossroads, Ghana needs bold, forward-thinking leadership capable of making impactful decisions. Here are the critical areas I believe the new minister should prioritise to transform Ghana into a vibrant and competitive tourism destination:Crafting a Clear and Actionable Tourism StrategyTourism in Ghana has often suffered from the absence of a cohesive, long-term vision. A well-articulated strategy is essential to define the sector’s direction, establish priorities, and measure success. This strategy should encompass:•    Sustainable Development: Ensuring tourism growth does not compromise the environment or local communities.•    Destination Marketing: Launching aggressive and creative marketing campaigns to position Ghana as a top choice for regional and global travellers.•    Stakeholder Collaboration: Engaging private and public sector players to align efforts and investments.Such a strategy would not only attract international visitors but also inspire Ghanaians to rediscover and cherish their homeland.Gaining from Ecotourism: Repairing the Damage from GalamseyGhana’s rich biodiversity – from Kakum National Park’s canopy walk to the wildlife safaris of Mole National Park – remains underutilised. Yet, the past few years have seen devastating environmental damage from illegal mining (“galamsey”), which has polluted rivers, degraded forests, and tarnished Ghana’s reputation as an ecotourism destination. The new minister must address these challenges and reposition Ghana as a leader in ecotourism by:•    Restoring and Protecting Damaged Ecosystems: Partnering environmental organisations to rehabilitate degraded lands, restore wildlife habitats, and clean up polluted water bodies such as the Ankobra and Pra rivers.•    Developing Sustainable Ecotourism Hubs: Enhancing infrastructure in ecotourism hotspots, including roads, signage and visitor facilities.•    Engaging Local Communities: Providing training and job opportunities to locals in affected regions, empowering them to benefit directly from ecotourism.•    Launching Image Repair Campaigns: Showcasing Ghana’s efforts to address environmental challenges on global platforms, rebuilding its image as a sustainable tourism destination. With the global shift toward eco-conscious travel, Ghana has an opportunity to turn this crisis into a competitive advantage.Investing in MICE TourismMeetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism is a lucrative segment that Ghana must fully explore. The new minister can make strides in this area by:•    Developing World-Class Infrastructure: Building and upgrading conference centres and event spaces in cities like Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi.•    Streamlining Visa Processes: Simplifying entry requirements to attract international delegates and event organisers.•    Forging Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with global MICE organisations to position Ghana as a preferred destination for conferences and exhibitions.MICE tourism not only drives direct revenue through event hosting but also generates economic ripple effects across hospitality, retail and transportation sectors.Realising the Black Star ExperienceOne of the NDC’s most ambitious tourism-related promises is “The Black Star Experience,” designed to celebrate Ghana’s cultural, artistic, and historical heritage. If implemented effectively, this initiative could become a cornerstone of Ghana’s tourism identity.Key components of this programme could include:•    Pan-African Month: Celebrations honouring Ghana’s role in Pan-Africanism and promoting African unity.•    Diaspora Engagement Programmes: Events reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots in Ghana.•    Arts and Culture Festivals: Annual film festivals, music awards and art exhibitions to attract local and international audiences. These initiatives would enhance tourist arrivals, promote local creative industries, and strengthen Ghana’s African cultural hub position.Establishing Ghana’s Own Tourism Trade ShowTo boost Ghana’s visibility on the global tourism map, the minister should prioritise the creation of an annual tourism trade show. This event would:•    Showcase Ghana’s Tourism Assets: Providing a platform for local operators to market their offerings to international buyers and investors.•    Facilitate Networking Opportunities: Connecting stakeholders across the tourism value chain for partnerships and collaborations.•    Promote Knowledge Sharing: Offering insights into global tourism trends and innovations to inspire local growth.A well-executed trade show could elevate Ghana’s tourism profile and attract much-needed investment. The Right Leadership for TourismThe challenges are enormous, but the rewards are even greater. Ghana has all the ingredients to become a leading tourism destination in Africa – rich culture, historic landmarks, vibrant festivals, and breathtaking landscapes. What is needed is the right leadership to harness these assets effectively. It is my hope that President Mahama will appoint someone with the right attitude, knowledge, and experience to manage complex business and tourism matters. This role demands a visionary leader who is not merely a politician or political stooge but one who understands tourism’s intricacies, appreciates its economic potential, and is prepared to make bold, transformative decisions. The tourism industry is waiting for a champion – let’s hope the President has given us one.

It is important that Gozo is granted regional autonomy – Gozo Business Chamber

On Friday, the Gozo Business Chamber celebrated its 25th anniversary during an event held under the patronage of President Myriam Spiteri Debono.
The Chamber was in fact established through a public deed on the 20th of December 1999. The event served as point of reflection for the Chamber providing an overview of the past but also an outlook on the future.
In his opening remarks, Michael Galea President of the Gozo Business Chamber, highlighted that while there is the need to diversify the Gozitan economy, “it is important that Gozo is granted regional autonomy so that it can outline its priorities based on the needs of the Gozitan community.”
He said that, “for Gozo to succeed and be competitive there is the need for more autonomy. Our history shows that we were also determined to lead our own affairs and to decide that which is necessary for Gozo. . . Autonomy provides Gozo and Gozitans with the necessary authority to take the best decisions about the regional economic strategy, the development of new infrastructure, and regional politics. We know Gozo’s real needs because we live, work and employ people on this island.”
Michael Galea also stressed on the importance of connectivity, the need for a new hospital for Gozo, the safeguarding of the environment, and the Chamber’s role in promoting business in Gozo.
In his concluding remarks, Daniel Borg, the CEO of the Gozo Business Chamber, said that this 25th anniversary event served as an important point of reflection to both analyse the contribution of the Chamber, past and present, but also discern its future role.
He remarked that this anniversary comes at an important crossroads in the country’s history as important anniversaries from when the country became independent, a republic, and a Member of the European Union, were celebrated.
Borg pointed out that “Gozo and the Gozitans are mature enough for Gozo to be an autonomous region.”
Nonetheless, he stated that that, “while I believe in the need for the dialogue on the Renewal of the Constitution to restart, Gozo’s regional autonomy needs to be studied, implemented and introduced in the Constitution. In this process political dialogue is of vital importance.”
He went on to say that “while there seems to be consensus from all parties on the political spectrum on the aspect of regionality, there is lack of consensus on the form on how the status of regionality should be implemented. And this is why these past days led me to reflect on the need for political dialogue which is honest, transparent, and sincere, and which does not suffocate the aspirations of the Gozitan community.”
He remarked about the Chamber’s institutional role and for this to be strengthened in order to enhance Gozo’s governance at all levels.
Finally Borg highlighted that the Chamber’s continued existence “cannot be taken for granted. But with the collaboration of all, its future can be secured.”
During the event the book – The Way Ahead, The Gozo Business Chamber in the Light of Gozo’s Recent History – was launched. The book was written by Dr Michael Refalo who also intervened and presented the book.
The book addresses both Gozo’s economic history and also the contribution of the Gozo Business Chamber to both Gozo’s economy and community. Dr Edward Warrington also spoke during the event reflecting on the role and future of the Chamber in today’s world.
Apart from the President, the event was also addressed by Prime Minister Robert Abela, the Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech, the CEO of the Gozo Regional Development Authority Mario Borg, the CEO of BOV Kenneth Farrugia, and the Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri.

Dominican Republic forced to technologize agriculture so as not to disappear as a sector

Agribusinessman and consultant Marcelino Vargas warns that Dominican agricultural production must become more technical to prevent its disappearance as a sector.Today, efficiency and competitiveness should be a significant concern of the institutions that lead the production” of agriculture and livestock in the country, said the cattle rancher and rice producer.
He said adapting our agriculture to the new times is essential, or we will fail and disappear as a sector. He specified “I have always considered that producers must make proposals and share them with governments, which must establish clear rules to stimulate the agricultural sector to be more efficient and competitive every day in this globalized world.”
He pointed out that a good example of this is the positive response that President Luis Abinader has offered to rice producers, who have been expressing concerns for years about their possible disappearance, if rice from the United States were allowed to enter the country paying zero tariff. He recalled that the president issued decree 693-24, which says that only importing 23,300 tons of rice per year from the United States would be allowed at zero rates, and the rest brought would pay a tax of 99%.
He explained that this is defending the country and our rice farmers. Vargas pointed out that he has been proposing for more than twenty years that we all propose together a zero tariff rate as of 2024 for the items affected by the DR-CAFTA, which has not been possible since only rice farmers have asked for protection from the Government so as not to be affected and received support from President Abinader.
He said that it should be taken into account that surpluses of U.S. products are sold below their actual prices. “We believe that starting this year, we are going to have problems with imports of milk, pork, chicken, beans, onions and garlic,” he said
He added that dairy products, especially powdered and liquid milk, their entry from the European Union pays zero tariff as of 2023. In recent years, UHT liquid milk has been imported from the European Union and sold in supermarkets at around 20 pesos cheaper than our milk. Vargas said that in Europe, both the producer and the supermarkets have a higher price than ours, and we ask ourselves: How is it possible that the supermarkets here sell that milk much cheaper than ours? In addition, they may have high export subsidies or it is likely that it is not cow’s milk. With cheeses, these cases are often repeated.
He once again proposed an alliance between producers and the Government so that some essential items would not disappear from our fields in the future. The Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) can participate in this grand alliance.
He warned that action must be taken now so tomorrow is not too late. Rice is likely to be one of the essential items least affected by the payment of zero tariffs on imported products.
He explained, “Dominicans don’t like rice imported from the United States because it’s harder than ours when cooked; it grows less and doesn’t fill the consumer, and it is a little more expensive than Dominican rice.”
Vargas said that these inconveniences mean that the business has to mix that rice with ours to be able to consume it, but we have the power to prohibit it from being sold mixed.

Thinking of Traveling in 2025? Here’s Where Airfares Are Falling

Key Takeaways
If you’ve caught the travel bug in 2025, you might find a better deal flying to international destinations this year, according to a recent report from online travel marketplace Hopper.Domestic flights are more expensive than they were a year ago, but many international airfares have dropped.January could be a good time to buy, the report found, with prices down from the busy holiday season, and expected to rise in the next six months.
If you’ve caught the travel bug in 2025, you might find a better deal flying to international destinations from the U.S. this year, according to a recent report from online travel marketplace Hopper.

Many international airfares are down this year compared to last, the report said. Some of the best deals can be found on long-haul trips to Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania as airlines have added capacity to nearly every region. However, airfares to the Caribbean and Mexico are up almost 10% from last year.

You may also be able to find a better bargain traveling to “off-the-beaten-track” destinations in Europe, the report found. While London and Paris remain popular choices, flights to São Jorge for example, an island off the coast of Portugal, are 25% cheaper than a year ago. You may not have heard of Oradea, Romania, but the city is famous for its hot springs and Art Nouveau architecture, and you could fly there for 21% less than last year.

Domestic Prices Rise
Meanwhile, U.S. airfares are up 12% from a year ago and could remain higher than 2023 and 2024 levels for at least the first half of the year, the report said. Hopper advises cost-conscious fliers to book their tickets early, with airfares down from the busy holiday season and projected to rise over the next six months.

If recent winter storms have you dreaming of a trip to a beach town, you aren’t alone. Coastal destinations like Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, South Carolina have increased in popularity, Hopper noted, as have Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts.

Travelers are also booking tickets to see places where popular TV shows are set, a phenomenon known as “set-jetting.” Demand for trips to Hawaii and Sicily popped after HBO’s The White Lotus featured resorts there in its first two seasons, and interest in Thailand has increased ahead of the season three premiere in February, Hopper added.

Citizens not quite ready to break up with the green ID book

The end is nigh for those old battered and tattered green identity books leaving many with mixed feelings of anxiety, nostalgia, and sheer frustration.
While the Department of Home Affairs clarified that the phase-out isn’t official yet, earlier this week, rumours of an end-of-year deadline caused a panic. However, Home Affairs Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza — during an interview with the SABC — assured citizens that no final cut-off date has been approved yet.

However the minister warned that using the old green book instead of converting to the new Smart ID card, made citizens more vulnerable to ID fraud.
Very soon, before the end of the year, we anticipate that we will stop issuing green barcoded IDs,” said Nzuza. “We encourage everyone to migrate to the Smart ID card to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud, which the green book is prone to.
The department has been running the Smart ID programme since 2013, however, many people still possess their green-barcoded ID book a decade later.
“If it ain’t broke…”For many Pietermaritzburg residents, the green ID book isn’t just an identity document; it’s an old, battle-hardened friend.
Loretta Wilson wrote, “This baby has taken care of me through all my years. I have had it since I was 16. Can’t seem to let go of it.”
Another commenter, Gael Dewar, said, “I queued for 20 hours and paid twice for my passport and ID card. That card is locked away, and I keep using my old book ID. If the government guarantees our possessions won’t be stolen, I’ll use the card.”
Some feel the green book, while old-fashioned, is doing just fine. Lee-Ann Clarke argued, “There’s nothing wrong with my green ID book. The smart card comes at a cost to me, so no, I am in no hurry to queue.”
Cost concernsMany citizens feel the government should foot the bill if it insists on the upgrade.
Linda Ngcobo pointed out, “If Home Affairs doesn’t make it free — I paid for my green one — then I might as well be an undocumented foreigner in my own country.”
Shaun Govender echoed this frustration, saying, “It’s unfair to make people pay for a change the government requires. At the end of the day, the poor and needy will not be able to do this.”
Others added that the real cost isn’t just money but time.

With long queues at Home Affairs offices and reports of inefficiencies, many are reluctant to endure what they see as an unnecessarily painful process.
