‘It will be jolly nice’: illustrator Helen Oxenbury, 86, on preparing for her first solo show – and a new book with Michael Rosen

The imaginations of hosts of little children, many now parents themselves, have been shaped by the paintbrush of Helen Oxenbury. Her illustrations have guided millions of toddlers off to the Land of Nod, yet the first solo exhibition of her work has been a long time coming. And so, just as oddly, has any follow-up collaboration with Michael Rosen, considering the huge success of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, their 1989 picture book. But now not only is a London gallery about to celebrate Oxenbury’s influential drawings, but the spring will see a key publishing event as she teams up with Rosen once again.“I have finished the drawings, but I still cannot possibly explain what it is about. It is quite weird. It feels a bit like a Dr Seuss, which I love,” the 86-year-old told the Observer this weekend. It is only the second time the duo have worked together and Oxenbury’s new illustrations are to accompany a Rosen poem called Oh Dear, Look What I Got!, a work he has regularly performed live. It describes a series of mishaps on a shopping expedition and features the same repeated, ear-worm phrases that are such a popular trademark of Bear Hunt.View image in fullscreen“I like the title, Oh Dear, which is quite a mild exclamation. It couldn’t really have been Oh shit, I know, although I do sometimes say that when I am drawing a picture,” confessed Oxenbury.“I’ve already read the book to some of my eight grandchildren and normally, when I say, ‘Look, this is something that Granny has done,’ they can be quite uninterested. This time, though, I have found they did later come out with some of the repetitive bits of verse.”Infamously, when Oxenbury’s watercolours for Bear Hunt were first shown to Rosen he was rather nonplussed. “He asked, ‘What on earth story is this?’ because he had imagined something quite different,” recalled Oxenbury.“But I hope Michael trusts me. He should do by now! It is up to our editor at Walker Books to show him the finished images. We did have some trouble with the ending, but that was sorted out.”Rosen and Oxenbury were invited to work separately on the original book, which was inspired by an American folk song. The Ipswich-born artist based her final, atmospheric beach scenes on childhood memories of the light at Felixstowe and on the River Deben.“I would never have believed that book would still be so popular. It sold OK when it was first published, then took off in the most extraordinary way.” Since then Bear Hunt has been turned into both an animated film and a stage show.View image in fullscreenHer upcoming exhibition, Helen Oxenbury: Illustrating the Land of Childhood, is planned to run from 6 March until 14 December at the Peggy Jay gallery at Burgh House in Hampstead, north London, close to Oxenbury’s home.“I have no idea why I haven’t had a solo show before, but it will be jolly nice to see it all up there,” she said. “I tend to forget what I have done.”Male illustrators, she notes, historically have had no such trouble taking centre stage. “Men have taken the limelight because they are men,” she said. “The number of men having their own exhibitions is enormous, but it just stems from their general dominance.skip past newsletter promotionafter newsletter promotion“Children’s book illustrations may have started out with women, such as Kate Greenaway and Beatrix Potter, at a time when it didn’t make much money, but then in the 60s and 70s it became quite a career and there was money to be made.”One of these offending men was Oxenbury’s own late husband, the writer and illustrator John Burningham, who died in 2019 and is best known for Mr Gumpy’s Outing and Avocado Baby. The couple met at London’s Central School of Art and Design in 1957, where Oxenbury was studying set design. They later married and had three children.Did they influence each other’s work? “No, I don’t think so, although someone did once say they would have known we were married because the babies we drew look the same. But I think we were influenced by our babies!”A multiple winner of the prestigious Kate Greenaway medal, including joint recognition in 1969 for her work on Edward Lear’s The Quangle Wangle’s Hat and Margaret Mahy’s The Dragon of an Ordinary Family, and then later in 1999 for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Oxenbury has a wealth of work to select from for her solo show.“I’ll choose from Bear Hunt, because people know that one so well, and from So Much by Trish Cooke, because it is a delightful book I enjoyed doing. And then perhaps something from The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, by Eugene Trivizas, which is quite funny,” the illustrator said, explaining that she always sees “quite clearly” how the pictures should look whenever she reads a new text.“I instantly know how it should be done, although whether I can do it is another matter.”So now, in the later phases of a 50-year career, the woman who first brought colour and form to Rosen’s famous verse is to get more of the recognition she deserves. The depth of her emotional impact on readers, though, still surprises her: “It is nice when people say they know my work, because you sit there doing all these pictures on your own for days. So it is lovely to get people’s reactions.”

What’s Bad: No proper character development for the supporting star cast, climax tends to get illogical, Urvashi Rautela’s non-existent appearance, underwhelming songs
Loo Break: You can definitely opt for one during the song featuring Nandamuri Balakrishna and Urvashi Rautela
Watch or Not?: NBK’s fans will surely have a visual delight with this one

The plot revolves around Daaku Maharaaj (Nandamuri Balakrishna) who poses as a driver at the house of a respected school principal (Sachin Khedekar) to protect the latter’s granddaughter Vaishnavi at all cost. It is soon revealed that Maharaaj has a special connection with Vaishnavi and he’s ready to go to great lengths to protect her. His past as to how he became the dreadful ‘Daaku Maharaaj’ is also unraveled while an old foe Balwant Singh Thakur (Bobby Deol) returns to settle some old scores.

Daaku Maharaaj Movie Review: Script Analysis
The film paves its way as a revenge drama with subplots like a rebellion against poverty, corruption, and crime. The theme of the familial bond being determined by love and not blood also forms a recurring message, especially with the bond between Daaku and Vaishnavi. The pace of the film remains intact with a concise screenplay, and it doesn’t waste time in any meandering subplots.
Maharaaj’s character development, especially with his becoming a rebellious dacoit against the notorious Thakur clan, is etched well. However, the movie could’ve erased some scenes which had little or no use to the story. A prime example of this is Urvashi Rautela’s character, wherein the actress is just used to elevate the glamour quotient. Even her song with Nandamuri Balakrishna appears downright cringe. While Bobby Deol and Ravi Kishan’s characters have a strong impact as the antagonist, the other villains don’t evoke any emotions. There could’ve also been room for exploring the relationship of devotion and loyalty between Daaku and his army of rebels.
Daaku Maharaaj Movie Review: Star Performance
Nandamuri Balakrishna proves why he’s hailed as ‘God Of The Masses’ in this one. Watch out for his dialogues like, “Don’t mess with the lion in me” or “I have done Masters in Murder.” He exudes a fiery screen presence and a massy aura especially in his action sequences. The superstar convincingly also channels his vulnerability in his performance.
Ravi Kishan is another cast member who impresses with his brief appearance. Bobby Deol’s performance definitely creates a bigger impact than his wasted screen presence in Kanguva. The actor looks menacing and does not appear caricaturish in the act. Pragya Jaiswal and Shraddha Srinath do full justice to their characters. We are still wondering about the need for Urvashi Rautela’s presence in the film. Watch out for the child actress who played little Vaishnavi.

Daaku Maharaaj Movie Review: Direction, Music
Director Bobby Kolli fulfills the requirement of all the die-hard fans of Nandamuri Balakrishna to present him in a larger than life manner. The film also retains the entertainment quotient and does not appear preachy or exaggerated with its message. S S Thaman’s background score is top notch but the soundtracks disappoint. The action sequences appear slick but a wounded Daaku on saline fighting the baddies in the climax inevitably comes across as Illogical and bizzare.

Daaku Maharaaj Movie Review: The Last Word
Despite some flaws, this one is a visual extravaganza for all the fans of Nandamuri Balakrishna. The plot is nothing unique and out of the box but it’s the superstar’s star power and screen presence which makes this an entertaining watch.

Media college premiers animated film, mayor touts alumni impact

Here’s the latest news from Middle Tennessee State University.Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Media and Entertainment and Department of Media Arts celebrated a milestone recently with the premiere of “All One,” the first original film from MT Imagine Animation Studios.MT Imagine Animation Studios, stylized as MT IMAGINE, serves clients by creating animated content for MTSU and organizations outside the university. The studio offers paid internships, giving students in MTSU’s animation program valuable experience working on real projects. In addition to client work, the studio focuses on developing original productions, such as “All One.”The fall semester film’s premiere in the Student Union Ballroom featured an ultrawide 48-by-12-foot LED screen assembled the day before by student volunteers under the guidance and supervision of Mike Forbes, media arts director of technical systems.Produced by a team of over 100 students and faculty, “All One” was led by four student directors — Skye Baxter, Stacey Marie Joan Teves, Cooper Rogers and Seth Savage — the production united students across all academic levels.”Our goal was to bring animation students closer to the live performance industry and to foster a sense of unity and collaboration across the program,” said media arts professor Rodrigo Gómez, the film’s producer. “The mix of students — from freshmen to seniors — created an incredible sense of collegiality and gave everyone valuable real-world experience.”The premiere was part of the animation program’s traditional Animation Showcase, which drew hundreds of attendees to the event. The production spanned months of meticulous planning and weekend animation sessions. Beginning with brainstorming sessions in last spring, the creative process continued through the summer with scriptwriting, concept design and animatic development. By fall, 80 animation students formed 16 teams, collaborating under the leadership of faculty and senior students.“All One” follows an astronaut who experiences his separation from life and others while pealing through layers of delirium and darkness only to discover the light in the middle of a never-ending nightmare.“Humans tend to detach from others in the face of challenges; when we meet hardship, we create layers within our drama and find it difficult to realize what life is all about. With our film, we want to express the hardship and joy, the highs and lows, the dark and the light; with our movie, we want to say: We All Are One—Together, We Are Stronger,” said Gómez. As “All One” begins its journey to the animation festival circuit, it sets the stage for future collaborations and innovations at MT Imagine Animation Studios.“We’ve awakened the creativity monster at MTSU,” Gómez said. “There is no stopping now.”Rutherford County mayor touts MTSU alumni impact per studyRutherford County Mayor Joe Carr recently underscored the conclusions of a recent study of MTSU alumni’s economic impact, pointing out that his county alone recorded over $4.1 billion in annual business revenue.“I’m not surprised at the data enumerated in the report,” Carr said in a county news release. The report showed MTSU also generated over $15.2 billion in statewide business revenue each year. The positive financial impact of MTSU’s graduates throughout Tennessee was detailed in the 2024 MTSU Alumni Impact Report by the Business and Economic Research Center in the Jennings A. Jones College of Business. The report also reflected how MTSU, located in Murfreesboro, particularly bolsters the economies of its home and surrounding counties.MTSU released the full report to local and state officials based on numbers from 2022, the base statistical year of the study.“I can’t imagine a Rutherford County without an MTSU,” said Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce President Paul Latture. “One of the things we do in economic development, when we recruit every single day, we have a leg up because we have a great university in MTSU here.”Added Carr, a university alumnus himself, “MTSU provides students with an exceptional education experience and the opportunity to become an integral part of the fastest-growing county in Tennessee,” he said.MTSU alumni in Nashville and Davidson County, including alumni-owned businesses, recorded the second-highest total in business revenue among Tennessee counties (after Rutherford), generating $2.9 billion. The Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga metropolitan statistical areas had totals of $11.3 billion, $509 million, and $504 million, respectively, in total business revenue impact by MTSU alumni and their businesses. In 2022, Rutherford County had the largest number of MTSU alumni residents at 32,500. Davidson follows behind with more than 19,300. Photo source: Welcome RhodesTourism’s contribution to Greece’s economy reached 28.5 billion euros in 2023, accounting for 13 percent of the country’s total GDP, according to the annual INSETE report, which provides a regional analysis of inbound tourism data for the year.
The report offers insights into visits, overnight stays, and tourism receipts, along with key performance indicators.
INSETE, the research institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), revealed that while the total number of overnight stays slightly decreased, tourism receipts and average spending saw notable increases.
The regions of South Aegean (27 percent), Crete (26 percent), Attica (19 percent), Ionian Islands (10 percent), and Central Macedonia (8 percent) accounted for the highest shares of tourism receipts.
Together, South Aegean and Crete alone represented over half (53 percent) of the country’s total tourism revenue.
Visitor satisfaction remains high

One of the standout findings of the report was the high level of satisfaction among visitors to Greece, who gave an average rating of 9.1 out of 10 during the peak travel season.
Cultural experiences were particularly well-received, with scores reaching 9.3 and 9.4 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Food and drink experiences followed closely with a score of 9, while the sun-and-sea category earned ratings between 8.8 and 9.1.
According to INSETE, the strong evaluations of cultural offerings highlight Greece’s potential for further developing cultural tourism.
Additionally, positive feedback from less-tourism developed regions points to opportunities for expanding tourism geographically and extending the tourist season.
Growth in inbound tourism and receipts

Inbound tourism grew by 4 percent between 2019 and 2023, with 32.7 million travelers visiting Greece in 2023, up from 31.3 million in 2019. International arrivals rose to 36 million, marking a 6 percent increase compared to 2019. Notably, cruise arrivals surged by 26 percent during this period, reaching 3.3 million in 2023.
Tourism receipts hit a record 20.7 billion euros, including 847 million euros from cruises, which represented a 70 percent increase compared to 2019. Average spending per visit rose by 13 percent, reaching 546 euros in 2023, while spending per overnight stay increased by 14 percent to 87 euros.

While regions such as South Aegean, Crete, Attica, Ionian Islands and Epirus experienced growth in receipts, others, including Central Macedonia, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, Thessaly, Western Greece, Central Greece, North Aegean and Western Macedonia.
Short-term rentals
Short-term rental demand through platforms like Airbnb also grew significantly, with a 34 percent increase in nights booked between 2019 and 2023.
The Attica region accounted for the largest share of nights spent in short-term rentals (23 percent), followed by Crete (17 percent) and the Cyclades islands (15 percent).
INSETE: Building a sustainable future for Greek tourism
In the report, INSETE General Director Elias Kikilias highlighted Greece’s strong tourism resources and the need for strategies to reduce seasonality and geographically expand tourism activities.
“By addressing seasonality and promoting lesser-known destinations, we can ensure sustainable growth that benefits residents across the country,” Kikilias said.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Katangari goes to Town’ is a thriller without thrills

The Nollywood thriller ‘Katangari Goes to Town‘, directed by Reuben Reng, premiered on Prime Video on January 4. Despite its intriguing title and synopsis, the film failed to deliver the suspense and tension expected of a good thriller.Advertisement
While it has its strong points, the film’s lack of suspense and thrill, its predictable storyline, and subpar makeup make it fall short of expectations.
[embedded content]
SYNOPSISAdvertisement
Quirky ‘Katangari,’ a retired police inspector and legendary sleuth, is called to Abuja to investigate the murder of his international businessman cousin Chief Bello Gyang. Suspects include Bello’s family, friends, and associates, all confined in his beautiful mansion until the culprit can be identified.
THE STRONG POINTS OF THE FILM
One of the standout elements of ‘Katangari Goes to Town’ is its cinematography. The visuals are impressive, capturing the beauty of the locations used, particularly during Katangari’s road trip scenes. The camera angles and movements are expertly executed, bringing out the best in every frame.Advertisement
The cast’s performance is another commendable aspect of the film. Each actor brings their character to life, making the story more engaging. Segun Arinze and Ireti Doyle deliver notable performances, with Doyle’s portrayal of a character speaking Hausa being a pleasant surprise.
The themes explored in ‘Katangari Goes to Town’ are also worth noting. The film delves into universal and relatable concepts such as revenge, love, addiction, the pursuit of wealth, betrayal, and trust. The way these issues were addressed also added depth to the story.
THE WEAK POINTS OF THE FILM
The film’s most glaring shortfall is its lack of suspense and thrill, essential for a solid whodunnit. The story flows predictably, with no memorable “wow” moments. By the middle of the film, it is already obvious who the murderer is, partly because of how the character is singled out. The reasons behind the suspects’ actions and the killer’s motive aren’t compelling enough. The elements that make a good thriller weren’t fully used, leaving the film feeling flat and underwhelming.Advertisement
The makeup in the film is also subpar. Katangari’s white hair and beard look noticeably unrealistic, which is distracting. There was even a scene where he reaches to stroke his beard but hesitates, likely because he remembers it isn’t real. This detail could have been executed much better.
There were also scenes in the movie that felt unnecessary and left the viewer questioning their purpose. For instance, the birthday scene where Katangari and Mima dance mid-investigation adds no real depth to the plot. Similarly, the recurring appearance and sound of the peacock disturbing Katangari hinted at something significant, but in the end, it turned out to be meaningless.
FINAL VERDICT
‘Katangari Goes to Town’ gets a 5/10Advertisement

Airline unveils all-Business Class suite featuring 24-inch 4K screen

Dolly Dy-Zulueta – Philstar.comJanuary 12, 2025 | 4:22pm

MANILA, Philippines — Flying can be a pleasant experience with all the onboard amenities. Depending on the aircraft used, there are different types of cabins that cater to different types of needs and preferences.

Cathay Pacific introduced a new way to experience air travel via its Aria Suite on board the airline’s retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

The airline unveiled its all-new Business class, Aria Suite, together with its new Premium Economy and refreshed Economy, onboard its newly retrofitted Boeing aircraft.

Official unveiling

This whole new cabin experience was introduced by Cathay Pacific at a special ceremony for distinguished guests, valued customers and Cathay members, members of the media and Cathay employees at Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited’s (HAECO) hangar facility at Hong Kong International Airport last October 16, 2024.

At the unveiling, Cathay Group Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau said: “At Cathay, we believe in moving people forward in life. This purpose goes beyond simply flying customers to their destinations; we are deeply woven into Hong Kong’s identity as a global aviation hub. To solidify our role in both the industry and the community, we’ve committed a significant investment of over HK$100 billion over the next seven years into our fleet, cabin products, lounges, and digital and sustainability leadership, reflecting our confidence in Hong Kong’s long-term growth and its position as a key player in global aviation.”

She added: “As part of this evolution, we are excited to introduce new seat products over the next three years, each designed to elevate the inflight experience for our customers. First, we are launching our all-new Business and Premium Economy cabins, and a refreshed Economy cabin on our retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER. This will be followed by a new world-leading First class experience onboard our 777-9s, and a brand-new flat-bed Business class product on our Airbus A330s. Through our investments in cutting-edge aircraft, innovative technology and groundbreaking facilities, we are dedicated to moving beyond expectations – in the air, on the ground and in every experience we create.”

In the highly anticipated Aria Suite, Cathay Pacific has placed customer experience at the heart of the design and conception of its new Business class. Artistry and craftsmanship have gone into every detail to create a holistic and immersive experience where comfort, privacy and a sense of personal space have been completely reimagined for customers.

A look at Cathay Pacific’s Aria Suite

Enhanced privacy

The retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER is configured in a three-class layout with a total of 361 seats, comprising 45 flat-bed Business, 48 Premium Economy, and 268 Economy seats.

In addition to retaining some of customers’ favorite features of Cathay Pacific’s existing Business class seats — such as the reverse herringbone arrangement, a generous bed and ample storage — the Aria Suite features an enhanced level of privacy with the addition of a suite door, which creates a unique space, thus giving customers the ability to work, rest and relax in true comfort.

Center-seat customers have the option to deploy the movable partition to enjoy an elevated level of privacy, or to have it open for a shared Business class experience with their travel partner.

Cathay Pacific has also created a personal in-suite space that instills an air of relaxation from the moment customers step inside, as they can customize the ambience of their suite through the various lighting options available at the touch of a button. Alternatively, customers can just let the aircraft set the mood for them with the airline’s activity-based pre-sets.

Likewise, the Aria Suite builds on airline’s award-winning inflight entertainment experience by providing customers with a 24-inch 4K ultra high definition screen that is the largest ever offered by the airline. Customers may pair this with their Bluetooth-enabled headphones to enjoy an even more personalized entertainment experience.

The Aria Suite also caters to the evolving digital needs of customers, who will delight in finding that the marble-style surface side console has a built-in wireless charger, perfect for charging their smartphones and other personal devices with ease simply by placing them on the dedicated spot. Alternatively, USB-A, USB-C, and AC power outlets are also available to suit customers’ needs, while the large table features an integrated personal electronic device (PED) holder.

Moreover, all-Business suite is equipped with a unique space for customers to stow their belongings safely and securely while working or relaxing during the flight. Care has at the same time been considered when the details of each cabin was thought of and designed, including the console, with a slide-away drawer, the soft-touch suede walls, the natural wool seat, the seamless bed surface, the soft leather headrest, among others.

On October 18, two days after its official unveiling, Cathay Pacific’s retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft debuted on its Hong Kong-Beijing route before progressively being deployed on other regional and long-haul routes.
