A team of US Army scientists has developed an innovative surface treatment aimed at enhancing the efficiency and extending the lifespan of military batteries.
The process involves applying an acidic solution to the batteries’ metal electrodes, followed by a controlled drying procedure.
This creates an ultra-thin protective layer, which significantly improves the battery’s performance and durability.
“This quick, commercially viable treatment process forms a unique interphase layer, thinner than a human hair, yet it greatly enhances the performance of rechargeable zinc batteries,” team chemist Dr. Travis Pollard explained.
“For soldiers, this could ultimately mean more reliable and longer-lasting power for their essential equipment.”
The solution was granted a patent in November and will soon be available for licensing.
Potential Applications
According to the research team, this new battery technology could have diverse applications, ranging from military equipment to electric vehicles.
It holds potential for use in advanced defense systems, military energy storage, portable electronics, and power solutions.
AnnMarie Martin, the team lead for technology transfer, emphasized that the “breakthrough” solution is designed to have the “widest possible impact.”
“We don’t just conduct research here,” she said. “This is a great way to ensure taxpayer dollars have the greatest possible effect.”
In 2023, the US Defense Logistics Agency’s Research and Development Office launched a similar initiative aimed at improving the safety, quality, shelf life, and operability of batteries powering US armaments.
