Biden warns of ‘oligarchy’ and ‘tech-industrial complex’ in farewell speech

SPEAKING FROM THE OVAL OFFICE ONE LAST TIME AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES – PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN DELIVERED HIS FAREWELL ADDRESS LAST NIGHT. TOUCHING ON WHAT HE BELIEVES ARE HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, BIDEN ALSO SPOKE ABOUT REFORMS HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE MADE IN WASHINGTON AND ISSUED A STARK WARNING – DETAILING HIS CONCERNS ON WHAT HE SEES AS A CONCENTRATION OF POWER AMONG THE ULTRA-WEALTHY AS WELL AS THE RISKS OF TECHNOLOGY.
IN WHAT IS LIKELY HIS FINAL ADDRESS TO THE NATION AFTER A POLITICAL CAREER SPANNING FIVE DECADES – BIDEN OPENED UP HIS SPEECH SPEAKING ABOUT THE CEASEFIRE DEAL IN GAZA,  ANNOUNCED EARLIER IN THE DAY,  SAYING HE KEPT THE INCOMING ADMINISTRATION FULLY INFORMED. HE THEN LISTED SOME JOB GROWTH FOLLOWING THE PANDEMIC, MODERNIZATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE, AND MEDICARE REFORM – TELLING  AMERICANS IT WILL TAKE TIME TO FEEL THE FULL IMPACT OF WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED.
WITH INAUGURATION OF DONALD TRUMP JUST DAYS AWAY, BIDEN SAID HE WILL ENSURE A PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER, BUT CAUTIONED.
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead. We see the consequences all across America. And we’ve seen it before. More than a century ago, the American people stood up to the robber barons back then and busted the trusts. They didn’t punish the wealthy. They just made the wealthy play by the rules everybody else had. Workers want rights to earn their fair share.
REFERENCING PRESIDENT EISENHOWER’S CONCERNS ABOUT A MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX SIX DECADES AGO, BIDEN SAID HE’S EQUALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE DANGERS OF A POTENTIAL RISE OF A TECH-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation enabling the abuse of power. The free press is crumbling. Editors are disappearing. Social media is giving up on fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit. We must hold the social platforms accountable to protect our children, our families and our very democracy from the abuse of power.
BIDEN NEXT REMARKED ABOUT THE RISE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE – CALLING IT THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL TECHNOLOGY OF OUR TIME AND THAT THE US — NOT CHINA — MUST LEAD IN THIS RACE.
THE PRESIDENT ALSO SPOKE OF HIS HOPES FOR CHANGE IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL – CALLING FOR AN END OF HIDDEN FUNDING CALLED “DARK MONEY” FROM CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS, A BAN ON STOCK TRADING FROM MEMBERS OF CONGRESS AND FOR THE U.S. TO ENACT AN 18-YEAR TERM LIMIT ON SUPREME COURT JUSTICES. HE ALSO CALLED FOR THE U.S. CONSTITUTION TO BE AMENDED.
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
We need to amend the Constitution to make clear that no president, no president is immune from crimes that he or she commits while in office. The president’s power is not limit — it is not absolute. And it shouldn’t be.
IN CLOSING, PRESIDENT BIDEN CALLED ON AMERICANS TO STAY ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS OF DEMOCRACY. TELLING THE STORY OF A VETERAN WHO WORKED AT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY — KNOWN AS THE KEEPER OF THE FLAME — HE SAID AMERICA WILL ALWAYS BE DEFINED BY ONE WORD – POSSIBILITIES.
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN
My eternal thanks to you, the American people. After 50 years of public service, I give you my word, I still believe in the idea for which this nation stands — a nation where the strength of our institutions and the character of our people matter and must endure. Now it’s your turn to stand guard. May you all be the keeper of the flame. May you keep the faith. I love America. You love it, too.
HOW THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS WAS RECEIVED DEPENDS ON WHOSE SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT YOU CHOSE TO CLICK ON.
THE SPEECH GARNERED RESPONSES ON BOTH ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM.
REPUBLICAN CONGRESSWOMAN NANCY MACE WRITING ON X QUOTE “JOE BIDEN DISCUSSING DEMOCRACY, A FREE PRESS, INSTITUTIONS AND THE ABUSE OF POWER IN HIS FINAL FAREWELL SPEECH IS RICH.”
REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN DARRELL ISSA WRITING QUOTE “JOE BIDEN’S GOING OUT OF OFFICE THE SAME WAY HE WENT IN: PETTY, PARTISAN, AND FRANKLY NOT TELLING THE TRUTH.”
AND REPUBLICAN SENATOR RICK SCOTT WRITING QUOTE “President Biden’s “farewell address” should have been a formal apology for the endless lawfare, inflation-fueling policies and reckless decisions made during his administration.”
MEANWHILE ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE, FORMER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE NANCY PELOSI WRITING “Tonight, President Biden delivered his farewell address to a nation that is stronger because of his leadership.  In doing so, he honored the vision of founders, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform and the aspirations of our children.”
AND FORMER PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA WRITING ABOUT HIS FORMER VICE PRESIDENT – SAYING, “Four years ago, in the middle of a pandemic, we needed a leader with the character to put politics aside and do what was right. That’s what Joe Biden did… I’m grateful to Joe for his leadership, his friendship, and his lifetime of service to this country we love.”
THIS MORNING, ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU’S OFFICE SAYS HIS CABINET WILL **NOT** MEET TO APPROVE THE DEAL FOR A CEASEFIRE IN GAZA… UNTIL HAMAS ENDS A QUOTE A “LAST-MINUTE CRISIS.”
THE DECISION COMES AFTER NETANYAHU’S OFFICE SAYS HAMAS WENT BACK ON SOME OF THE TERMS OF THE AGREEMENT — BUT DID NOT SPECIFY WHICH TERMS.
EVEN AS A DEAL SEEMS CLOSE OR EVEN IMMINENT — ISRAELI STRIKES HAVE CONTINUED IN THE GAZA STRIP, WITH THE TERRITORY’S HEALTH MINISTRY REPORTING AT LEAST 48 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED OVER THE PAST DAY.
UNDER THE THREE-PHASE CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT — FIGHTING WILL STOP IN GAZA FOR 42 DAYS.  33 ISRAELI HOSTAGES — INCLUDING 2 AMERICANS- AND HUNDREDS OF PALESTINIAN PRISONERS WILL BE FREED IN THE FIRST PHASE, WHICH IS SET TO GO INTO EFFECT SUNDAY.  THE REMAINDER OF THE HOSTAGES, INCLUDING ISRAELI MALE SOLDIERS, ARE TO BE RELEASED IN A SECOND PHASE.  HAMAS HAS SAID IT WILL NOT RELEASE THE REMAINING CAPTIVES WITHOUT A LASTING CEASEFIRE AND A FULL ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL,
ISRAELI TROOPS **WILL** PULL BACK TO THE EDGES OF GAZA AND MANY PALESTINIANS WILL BE ABLE TO RETURN TO WHAT REMAINS OF THEIR HOMES — SOMETHING MANY PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS TO CELEBRATE.
ISRAEL IS ALSO SET TO ALLOW A FLOOD OF HUMANITARIAN AID INTO THE REGION.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS IS REPORTING MEDIATORS FROM EGYPT, QATAR AND THE U-S ARE TO MEET IN CAIRO TODAY FOR TALKS ON IMPLEMENTING THE DEAL.
ON TRUTH SOCIAL, PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP SAID HIS ADMINISTRATION WILL CONTINUE TO WORK CLOSELY WITH ISRAEL TO MAKE SURE GAZA NEVER AGAIN BECOMES A TERRORIST SAFE HAVEN.
BACK HERE IN THE U-S — TO QUOTE THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE — THERE’S GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS THIS MORNING IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THE WILDFIRES RAGING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THE N-W-S RED FLAG WARNING, FOR THE LOS ANGELES AREA, IS LIFTED AND STRONG WINDS THAT HAVE MADE IT MUCH  HARDER FOR FIRE CREWS TO BATTLE THE FLAMES ARE DYING DOWN.
THE BAD NEWS, HOWEVER, IS DANGEROUS FIRE AND WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO RETURN NEXT WEEK.
THIS AS FIREFIGHTERS ARE STILL WORKING TO CONTAIN THE TWO BIGGEST, DEADLIEST, AND MOST DESTRUCTIVE FIRES, STILL  RAGING RIGHT NOW — THE PALISADES AND EATON FIRES. ALSO, A NEW FIRE HAS BROKEN OUT IN THE SAN BERNARDINO AREA.
THE EATON AND PALISADES FIRES HAVE NOT GROWN MUCH OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS,  BUT THEY ARE BOTH,  STILL LARGELY UNCONTAINED.
FIRE OFFICIALS REPORT PROGRESS IN THE DESPERATE FIGHT TO PUT OUT THE FLAMES.
MEANWHILE, THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN FIRE IN SAN BERNARDINO SPANS MORE THAN 30 ACRES AND HAS NOT YET BEEN CONTAINED.
POLICE ARRESTED A MAN IN CONNECTION WITH THAT FIRE ON TWO FELONY CHARGES — INCLUDING ONE OF RECKLESS BURNING.
TURNING BACK TO POLITICS — SENATE CONFIRMATION HEARINGS CONTINUE TODAY AS PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP’S PICKS FOR INTERIOR SECRETARY, EPA ADMINISTRATOR, HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT SECRETARY AND TREASURY SECRETARY ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM LAWMAKERS.
ON WEDNESDAY, PAM BONDI, TRUMP’S NOMINEE FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL WAS ON THE HOT SEAT FROM DEMOCRATIC SENATORS — INCLUDING A QUESTION FROM SENATOR DICK DURBIN ASKING BONDI IF SHE BELIEVED TRUMP LOST THE 2020 ELECTION.
SEN. DICK DURBIN | D-Ill.
“To my knowledge, Donald Trump has never acknowledged the legal results of the 2020 election. Are you prepared to say today, under oath without reservation, that Donald Trump lost the presidential contest to Joe Biden in 2020?”
PAM BONDI | ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE
“Ranking Member Durbin, President Biden is the president of the United States. He was duly sworn in and he is the president of the United States. There was a peaceful transition of power. President Trump left office and was overwhelmingly elected in 2024.”

Thohoyandou woman builds thriving beauty spa business

LIMPOPO – Mokgadi Hanley Masedi, the owner of Hanley Beauty Spa in Tshisahulu village near Thohoyandou, has defied the odds to create a business that is now making a mark in her community and beyond.
Born and raised in Sibasa, Mokgadi’s story begins in a blended family, where she stepped up as a parental figure after the passing of her mother. With the responsibility of caring for her siblings, she realised that a traditional 9-to-5 job wouldn’t allow her the flexibility to be there for her family. This led her to open Hanley Beauty Spa in 2022.
She says her journey to entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. “The road has been tough, but giving up has never been an option for me.” Despite the challenges, she has thrived, viewing them as opportunities to grow. “If I had given up, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she says, acknowledging the hard work and perseverance that have shaped her success.
Her passion for beauty and wellness, combined with her business mindset, has fuelled her drive to help others. She describes the most fulfilling part of being a therapeutic masseuse as the impact her work has on her clients. “My work speaks for itself,” she says, confident that the comfort and relief her clients feel through her services are her best marketing tools.
While she is trained as a pharmacist assistant, Mokgadi has managed to balance both her career and her business ventures. The opening of Hanley Beauty Spa was, in her words, the most important achievement of her life, and she’s far from done. “In the next five years, I envision Hanley Beauty Spa branches in all nine provinces,” she says.
For Mokgadi, success is not just about achieving her goals but about inspiring others too. She encourages young girls to pursue their dreams, no matter how small they may seem. “Life is about taking risks,” she advises. “Don’t let distractions pull you away from your business idea.”

The strange science of how fog forms

Fog is made up of molecules of water vapour, suspended in the air as tiny droplets of water but lingering close to the surface. Essentially, fog is just cloud that touches Earth’s surface and it forms the same way that clouds do. High humidity is a major contributing factor to the formation of fog, and depending on the percentage (as well as temperature), fog can appear and disappear very suddenly.Water in the vapour state is transparent and invisible. The warmer the air, the more kinetic energy it has, and so the more water molecules it can keep jostling around as vapour.
If warm air containing lots of water vapour cools down suddenly, the water molecules slow down too much and are unable to stay in vapour form. Instead, they clump together into tiny droplets of liquid water. The droplets are still small enough to hang suspended in the air currents, but now they appear opaque because light reflects off the air/water interface.
Radiation fog
Radiation fog © Dan Bright
Radiation fog forms over land on calm, clear nights when heat absorbed by the Earth’s surface during the day is radiated into the air. As the heat escapes upwards, air close to the surface is cooled until it reaches saturation.
Cold air holds less water vapour than warm air, and the water vapour condenses into fog. Radiation fog will usually ‘burn off’ as the ground begins to warm again, but during winter months it can persist all day.
Radiation fog is also known as shallow fog or ground fog when it occurs in a narrow enough layer, situated below average eye-level on land (around 2m), or below around 10m at sea.
Valley fog
Valley Fog © Dan Bright
Valley fogusually forms in the lowest parts of a valley as cold, dense air settles and condenses, forming fog. It’s confined by local topography, such as hills or mountains, and can persist for several days.
Advection fog
Advection fog © Dan Bright
Advection fogforms when horizontal winds push warm, moist, air over a cool surface, where it condenses into fog. It’s common at sea, where warm, tropical air moves over cooler water. Advection fog can cover wide areas, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay is often shrouded in advection fog.
Sea fog, a type of advection fog, can occur when warm, wet, air rolls off the land and onto the colder sea, or when a warm weather front hits a cold ocean current. In the UK, the north-east coast is very prone to sea fog because of the cold waters of the North Sea.
Upslope fog
Upslope fog © Dan Bright
Upslope fog is a type of hill fog and forms when the wind blows moist air up a slope, hill, or mountain, which cools as it rises. As it cools, the moisture condenses, and fog is formed as it continues to drift up the slope.
Evaporation fog
Evaporation fog © Dan Bright
Evaporation fog is similar to advection fog, and forms as cold air passes over moist land or warm water. When the warmer water evaporates into the low bands of air, it warms the air and causes it to rise. As this warm, moist air rises, it mixes with the colder air until its humidity reaches 100 per cent, and fog is formed. You’ll often see evaporation fog over lakes, ponds and even outdoor swimming pools.
Why does altitude affect air temperature?
Imagine the atmosphere made up of parcels of air: the higher they are, the less strongly they’re compressed by the weight of the overlying atmosphere, and so the bigger their volume can be. Such expansion requires energy, and as the total energy in the parcel of air is fixed, it comes at the expense of thermal energy – thus lowering the temperature.
Does sound travel further on foggy days?
“Sound travels through the air as pressure waves rhythmically moving air molecules back and forth. Fog contains water droplets that scatter more of the sound energy, thus damping the sound and reducing the distance at which you can hear it,” explains physicist Robert Matthews.
So, case closed? Not quite – because both the basic theory and experiments don’t take account of all the conditions under which fog forms.
“On warmer days where the humidity is especially high, the water molecules in the air are more agitated and can only form the tiniest droplets, which have a negligible effect on the sound waves.”
“This damp air also has a higher density than dry air, which means that the sound waves can travel more effectively and be heard over a greater distance,” Matthews adds.

Henry’s Diner celebrates 100 years of business

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Burlington mainstay is celebrating a big milestone. With its neon red sign and sizzle of the grill, Henry’s Diner has been the spot for Vermonters to grab a bite and have the comfort of home for 100 years. On the precipice of its centennial, the diner changed hands and Patricio Ortiz took ownership. An Argentinian manufacturing engineer by trade, Ortiz wanted a change, and Henry’s was the perfect opportunity. “At one point I wanted something different,” said Ortiz. However, a different trade doesn’t mean a different process. “Every concept of line manufacturing can be applied at a restaurant – or to anything as a matter of fact,” said Ortiz. Ortiz sees the business as a well-oiled machine. “People say it’s really different. It’s not actually. It’s a process – you have your input, process, and your output,” he said.As a restaurant industry outsider, Ortiz needed a veteran to help him steer the ship. Manager Kim Smith acts as his right hand. “When we met, he shook my hand, and I knew we were gonna be a partner,” said Smith.Smith says taking good care of customers is essential to their practice.“They love our food for one, you know get them in the door, and then they know they’re going to be taken care of,” she said. The community feel is something customers appreciate. “You’re not really thinking about a lot of the menu choices – we’ve got friendly people. We know their names. They know our names. You know like today, I just hand them the credit card and say, ‘You know what the tip is’,” said Jim Holway of Burlington. With a new point-of-sale system and other automation, Henry’s current business practices are leagues ahead of the paper slips the diner used decades ago. “The diner has its own identity. I don’t need to reinvent the wheel. I just need to improve the wheel,” said Ortiz.Despite the changes in operation, the bones of the original cable car diner remain to this day. “One of the original things left from the original cart is the ceiling in the bathroom. When they renovated this bathroom for the handicapped, they found the original ceiling for the railroad cart. This ceiling was supposed to continue all the way through,” said Ortiz. Those original features are an important part of the diner’s charm – as well as its welcoming atmosphere. “All different kinds of dress, all different kinds of faiths and beliefs and nationalities, it’s a total mix and everyone is welcome. As you said, it; ‘s a very welcoming place,” said customer Rick Barrett. Reporter John McMahon: “Do you think diners will solve our problems?”Barrett: “Diners will solve our problems! When you break bread with somebody – it’s hard to stay angry with you.”People in front of and behind the counter are raising a toast – whether wheat, sourdough, or marble rye – to another 100 years.Copyright 2025 WCAX.
