In 1960, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz said: “what we are sowing the most are opportunities for intelligence”, that which today bears fruit in many branches of science, technology and innovation, and for which yesterday, with great pride, the Cuban Science Day was celebrated.
The celebration, held at the Havana Convention Palace, was attended by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who presented the Labor Prowess Flag to the Institute of Meteorology for its outstanding performance in 2024.
In the presence of the member of the Political Bureau of the Party and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, the Workers Central Union of Cuba (CTC in Spanish) conferred the 85th Anniversary Seal of the trade union organization to the Institute of Philosophy.
Acknowledgements were granted to the province of Havana, which was awarded the seal for the anniversary, as well as to the provinces of Pinar del Río, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey and Holguín, which were distinguished with the status of Outstanding.
Five professionals of fruitful work and commitment to science received the Juan Tomás Roig Honorary Distinction: Idalia López Perdomo, Odalys Goicochea Cardoso, Ricardo del Risco Alfonso, Ivis Pérez O’Reilly and Alejandro Torres Gómez.
Armando Rodríguez Batista, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, said that science is, together with health, education, culture and sports, one of the collective and heroic conquests of the Cuban Revolution. “Science, like all culture, will continue to be the shield and sword of the nation,” he emphasized.
Díaz-Canel also inaugurated the Innovation for Sustainable Development Fair.
