SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School remained closed on Friday.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh told CNY Central that code enforcement said progress is being made on the charter school but code violations still exist and need to be resolved. The charter school was deemed unfit for human occupancy after a carbon monoxide leak was detected at the school on Jan. 7.
That leak was only detected after the Syracuse Fire Department responded to a report of a body being found by school staff inside the cafeteria. That body was night cleaner Brian Deforge. As firefighters worked to provide aid, their carbon monoxide detectors began going off, alerting everyone of the leak.
The school was then shuttered the next day.
The Syracuse Police Department is investigating the death of Deforge.
