KUCHING (Jan 18): The Sarawak government has plans to introduce sports science and sports management courses in institutions of higher learning (IPTs) in the state.
In this aspect, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government had actually discussed with the Ministry of Education (MoE).
“You have to start from secondary sports school; there are sports disciplines in universities.
“Universities such as i-CATS (International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak), Swinburne (University of Technology Sarawak Campus) and Curtin (University Malaysia) can provide such courses, especially in Swinburne where the students come from all around the world and they can make cultural and sports exchanges,” he told a press conference after the launch of the Borneo Cricket Ground at the Sarawak Sports Complex here today.
Abang Johari was responding to the question whether the state government was keen on introducing sports management/sports science courses at any of the five state-owned IPTs in order to promote development of sports tourism and sports industry.
According to Abang Johari, Sarawak has many high calibre athletes, but there is a lack of environment for them to develop further and thus, this highlighted the need to build and upgrade sports facilities.
Also present were Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, lnternational Cricket Council board director Mahinda Vallipuram, former president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and current patron of the Malaysia Cricket Association patron Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja’afar, and Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
