Syracuse, N.Y. — School leaders at the Syracuse Academy of Science say they’ll reopen for in-person instruction on Wednesday January 22, two weeks after closing abruptly.
The school evacuated students and staff on January 7 after a night cleaner, Brian DeForge was found by a staff member dead in the cafeteria. When fire crews responded, their equipment detected high levels of the colorless, odorless, deadly gas carbon monoxide.
It’s still not clear if DeForge’s death and the CO leak are related. Syracuse Police are the lead agency handling the investigation into both.

“We are pleased to announce that the inspection and certification processes for reopening the SAS High School building have been successfully completed. Working in close collaboration with local authorities, we have finalized the reinspection of the kitchen equipment, its ventilation system, and the fire alarm system. Additionally, we have installed a new hardwired and monitored carbon monoxide detection system to further enhance safety measures,” school leaders said in a statement on their website Friday.
Parents of high school students are invited to visit the building on Tuesday, January 21 between 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. “providing an opportunity to view the completed work and review the certifications provided by contractors and inspectors,” the statement said.
CNY Central checked, and the code violations open with the City of Syracuse, including a declaration that the building is unfit for human occupancy, are all still open on their data portal online.
