VHP denied permission to set up a book stall at the International Kolkata Book Fair

VHP’s books are allegedly controversial and sensitive

VHP files petition in the Calcutta High Court

Kolkata (Bengal) – Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has not been allowed to set up its stall at the 48th International Kolkata Book Fair to be held here from January 28th to February 9th, 2025. The reason given was that ‘VHP’s books are controversial and sensitive. Therefore, there is a risk of unrest’. When VHP filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court, the Court slammed the organizers. The next hearing in this matter will be held on January 20th.
VHP had applied for a book stall with the Publishers and Booksellers Association in October 2024 itself. VHP says that its application was kept pending. Despite repeated requests by VHP, the association did not respond.
The association said that the application submitted by the VHP for the book stall has been rejected saying that it was not in the prescribed format. The association also alleged that the VHP had not fulfilled the conditions required to participate in the programme.
How did the organizers suddenly realise this year that VHP’s books are sensitive : Calcutta HC
During the hearing in the High Court, the advocate of the Publishers and Booksellers Association claimed, ‘The books published by the VHP are sensitive and controversial. These books can spread unrest. We do not want any such confusion. Therefore, it has been decided not to allot any book stall to the VHP at this year’s fair.’ On this, Justice Amrita Sinha of the Calcutta High Court asked the advocates, did you know that the VHP had publications ? You had earlier allowed the VHP to set up a book stall; then what suddenly happened that made you feel that the VHP’s publications are so sensitive and controversial that they can create a problem ?

Confident Cybersecurity: Essentials for Every Business

Are Businesses Truly Prepared for Today’s Cybersecurity Challenges?
With the transition to a digital majority, company networks are continuously at risk, and potential breaches are growing more severe each day. So, how well-prepared is the average business when it comes to cybersecurity essentials?
Business Cybersecurity: More Than Just Firewalls and Antivirus
One critical aspect of business cybersecurity revolves around the management of Non-Human Identities (NHIs) and Secrets. For the uninformed, NHIs are machine identities, created by combining a “Secret” (like an encrypted password or token) with the permissions granted to that Secret by a server. This forms a unique identity capable of performing a variety of actions within a system.
The management of NHIs is a crucial component of cybersecurity and involves protecting both the identities and their access permissions. It’s like ensuring the safety of a tourist (NHI) and their passport (Secret), as well as monitoring their behaviours within the destination (system). Effective remediation strategies for NHIs in cloud environments can reduce the risk of security breaches significantly.

From Discovery to Remediation: A Holistic Approach to NHI Management
NHI management is all about adopting a holistic approach towards securing machine identities and secrets. It addresses every stage of the lifecycle, from discovery and classification to threat detection and remediation. This strategy stands apart from limited protection solutions and provides insights into ownership, permissions, usage patterns, and potential vulnerabilities.
Here’s Why NHI Management Matters
By providing an end-to-end strategy, NHI management promises several benefits:

Understanding the science and danger behind a ‘flash freeze’

The winter season can bring a lot of surprises like flash freezes, here’s the science behind it.

CLEVELAND — A flash freeze is a rapid and sometimes dangerous drop in temperature that causes wet surfaces to freeze almost instantly.

A flash freeze is typically associated with dramatic shifts in weather. An abrupt freeze can create hazardous conditions for roads, sidewalks, and infrastructure. Here’s a detailed look at how flash freezes occur and the risks they pose.

The Atmospheric Process

Warm and Wet Preceding Conditions: Flash freezes are often preceded by a period of above-freezing temperatures, during which rain or melting snow leaves surfaces wet.Rapid Temperature Drop: A sharp and sudden drop in temperature, often due to the arrival of a cold front, Arctic air mass, or strong winds, causes the wet surfaces to freeze almost instantaneously.Wind Chill Effect: Strong winds accompanying the cold front can speed up the cooling process, further accelerating the freezing of any residual moisture.

The speed and severity of the temperature change are what distinguish a flash freeze from typical freezing processes. Temperatures can drop by 20°F or more in just a few hours, catching many by surprise.

Common Scenarios for Flash Freezes

Cold Fronts: A powerful cold front sweeps through the area, sharply replacing warm air with colder air.Rain-to-Freezing Transition: Rainfall during above-freezing conditions transitions to freezing rain or snow as temperatures drop.Overnight Cooling: Warm daytime temperatures are followed by a rapid drop in temperatures overnight.

Dangers of a Flash Freeze

Icy Roads: Roads that were wet from rain or melting snow can quickly become sheets of ice, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Black ice, which is nearly invisible, poses a significant danger to motorists.Slippery Sidewalks: Pedestrians are at risk of slipping and falling on sidewalks and walkways that freeze over unexpectedly.Infrastructure Strain: Sudden freezing can cause water pipes to burst and damage infrastructure, particularly if water expands as it freezes.Power Outages: The combination of ice accumulation and strong winds can lead to power outages, as ice-laden branches and wires are more prone to snapping.

A flash freeze is a dramatic and potentially hazardous weather event that requires preparedness and caution. Understanding the atmospheric conditions that lead to flash freezes and knowing how to respond can help reduce the risks.

Simpler cross border travel policies, scam tourism solutions top agenda at Asean tourism meet

JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 19 — ASEAN tourism ministers met this morning to discuss strategies for boosting regional tourism with a strong emphasis on simplifying cross-border travel processes to allow for easier movement between member countries.Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said tourism is a vital pillar of economic growth in the region, thus improving cross-border collaboration is essential for creating a competitive and accessible tourism environment.“As I previously stated, we must simplify policies that will increase the number of tourists coming in.
