Climate scientist: “There’s no place that’s safe”

The monster that roared through L.A. County last week is still alive – but firefighters seem to have it cornered. People have started returning to their homes, or what’s left of them. Insurance, if they had it, is a whole other battle. The focus now is turning from what happened to why it happened, and what in the world is next?   This disaster is as bad as just about anybody here can remember … but is it really just the new normal?

John Vaillant, author of “Fire Weather: On the Front Lines of a Burning World,” said, “Nature is telling us, ‘I can’t take this anymore. I cannot support you if you keep treating me this way.'”Vaillant says climate change is making disasters like the wind-driven L.A. fires even fiercer. “We can expect fires of this intensity, and worse, in the future,” he said. “The types of fires we’ve seen over the past ten years are qualitatively different from the previous hundred years.””The types of fires are different?” I asked. “How has fire changed?”

Vintage

“In a number of ways. The most potent and frightening way, the most obvious to the layperson, people like us, is it moves faster and with greater intensity. When you talk to any firefighter with any sense of history, they are seeing different [fire] behavior that is, in many cases, un-fightable.” And Vaillant says the cause is something science has been telling us for decades: the CO2 that our combustion engines keep pumping into the atmosphere. “We don’t feel it; we don’t smell it; we don’t notice it,” he said. “But if you were to take the car engine that brought me here and set it up on the floor here and fired it up, we would go deaf, and then we would die from its emissions.  And that’s under the hood of every internal combustion engine car. And there are hundreds of millions of them. So, the emissions from fire, these trillions of fires that we make every day, has created this artificially warm climate.”And so, he says, we get more intense fires … stronger hurricanes … and hotter heatwaves.  Climate scientist Peter Kalmus has been sounding much the same alarm for years – and feels like, while he’s trying to share the science of climate change to the world, no one is listening. We met him in 2022 near his home in Altadena, California, just as he was about to move his family to North Carolina.”So, for a few years I wanted to move to some place a little bit less fiery,” he told us this week. “But I want to make it clear, I don’t think there’s any place safe from climate change.”

Kalmus learned that firsthand last year, when North Carolina was trashed by Hurricane Helene. And the California fires were a disaster for him as well; his old house in Altadena, and his friends’ homes, all burned to the ground. He said, “I am hopeful that, if there’s a silver lining to this tragedy, it’s that, you know, the public will wake up and get angry and say, ‘We need to do something about this. Enough is enough.'” Scientists like Kalmus have been warning the world about impending climate disaster for years now. But on January 6, as the fire closed in on Altadena, perhaps the most effective warning came from an amateur meteorologist. Edgar McGregor has been picking up trash in Altadena every day for more than five years. He’s also into meteorology, and runs a Facebook page about weather. Days before the fires even started, he warned his Facebook followers about dangerous conditions, and on January 6, he posted a video telling them to drop everything and get out of town. “I said, ‘Get out,'” McGregor explained. “I stood in the middle of my street at home, filmed myself with the mountains on fire behind me and told people, ‘This is serious. Get your Social Security cards. Get the deed to your home. Get out. Like, this is the Big One. I’m not joking around. This is not gonna blow over.'” Jenn Siebert, an Altadena mother of two, didn’t need to hear that twice. “I think he, well, he definitely saved my family’s lives,” she said. “We all listened to him. We were like, ‘This kid knows what he’s talking about!'” Her own house somehow survived; her neighbors weren’t so lucky. “My best friends, like, they’ve lost everything,” Siebert said. “They’re alive, because, probably because of Edgar, I would imagine. Everybody in the Beautiful Altadena group is alive because of Edgar, right now.” Siebert, who had never met McGregor in person, embraced him when she was introduced. “I’m so appreciative of you,” she said. “You saved my family and you saved so many people. So, thank you.”

The fires, experts say, are a warning on a much bigger scale, that the Earth will continue to get drier and more volatile unless we do something about climate change. But of course, warnings only work when people listen.  I asked Vaillant, “Have we just pushed Nature too far?” “The upside to all of this is, Nature is inviting us, sternly, to reengage,” he replied. “It’s only going to get hotter. And so, Nature is saying, ‘Wake up! We are in this together.’ It behooves all of us to focus on the real causes, and to understand that this really can happen to us, to us, to you and to me, not just to people we know, or people on TV.” READ AN EXCERPT: “Fire Weather” by John Vaillant       For more info:        Story produced by John D’Amelio. ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ director says the movie has ‘the most difficult thing we’ve ever done’

The Mission: Impossible movies are known at this point for including at least one death-defying stunt from star Tom Cruise. Cruise seems hellbent on putting his life in danger for the benefit of audiences, and thus far, that dedication has led to some pretty excellent movies.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning may or may not be the final installment in the franchise, but director Christopher McQuarrie is already suggesting that the movie has one of the biggest stunts in the franchise’s history. In speaking with Empire (per GamesRadar), he said that the film contains “the most difficult thing” they’ve ever done with the series. Unfortunately, he didn’t go into detail about what the sequence involved.

McQuarrie did detail a test screening, though, and the sequence went over exactly the way he had hoped. “We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right,” he explained.

The Final Reckoning is set to pick up many of the plot threads that were left dangling in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, as Cruise’s Ethan Hunt faces off against the artificial intelligence known as The Entity. The first trailer for the new film suggests that Cruise will hang off of at least one plane, fight plenty of bad guys, and also do something daring underwater. While we don’t know which sequence was the most difficult, it’s safe to say the movie will contain plenty of stunts.

As Trump inauguration is moved indoors, tourists in DC say they just ‘wanted to be a part of it’

More than a quarter of a million tickets were handed out for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration Monday.
Due to the expected freezing temperatures, the 60th inauguration was moved inside the U.S. Capitol and the inaugural parade will now be taking place at Capital One Arena.
Now, hundreds of thousands of people are not only looking for things to do while they are visiting the nation’s capital, they are also hoping to find the perfect spot to view Trump take the oath of office.

If you are wondering why some don’t scrap their plans and watch from home, money may be an issue.
Madison Jones and her friends traveled from North Carolina for the inauguration. Jones told WTOP that she is paying $1,600 for a two-night stay in D.C. She hopes she will be able to attend Sunday’s Trump rally at Capital One Arena.
“Main thing is listening to him speak and sightseeing,” Jones said.
While a lot of those that call the D.C. area home only visit the tourist sites in D.C. when they have friends or family in town, Brandon Moore and his friends from Ohio fit in a year’s worth of sightseeing.
“We went to the Capitol and walked around. The Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Bible Museum. Just about anything we could get to we went inside,” said Moore.
Moore hopes the inaugural tickets he received from Vice President-elect JD Vance’s senate office will get him into the Capital One Arena. If not, Moore said he and his friends will make the best of it.
A lot of the folks in town are taking in the Memorials and monuments, including Stacey Rayford. He and his friends came to town from Louisiana after snagging inaugural tickets from the office of Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
“It’s going to be a historic event on multiple levels, and we wanted to be part of it,” Rayford said.
While he is not sure where they will watch the swearing-in ceremony, Rayford told WTOP he knows the type of place he wants.
“We’re going to find somewhere warm and some good food to eat, and hopefully have an opportunity to socialize with some of the people we have things in common with,” said Rayford.
An hour after their plane landed, 21-year-old LeBron Maverevedze and his father wanted to witness Trump become the 47th President of the United States, which may be surprising to some, considering they are both Canadian.
“The United States President is considered the president of the world, since it’s a superpower. So, we all have to support whoever is gonna be inaugurated,” Maverevedze said.

Pachamalai witnesses a steady increase in tourist arrival, thanks to prolonged holidays

Pachamalai hills, a low mountain range of the Eastern Ghats, has shown signs of attracting tourists. Situated about 80 km from Tiruchi, it cannot be compared with the most sought-after hill stations such as Udhagamandalam, Kodaikanal and Yercaud. But Pachamalai is known for its incredible beauty and the greenery and gentle misty breeze. Spread over 5,200 square miles, it is considered as a treasure trove of exquisite natural beauty, spanning elevations from 1,770 feet to 4,620 feet. The Koraiyar Falls, Mangalam Falls, and Mayil Oothu Falls are some of the most popular attractions in Pachamalai. The tourist footfalls at Topsengattupatti, a leading tribe village, is said to have witnessed a sharp increase in the recent past. Thanks to the long spell of Pongal holidays and Christmas and New Year, many tourists visited the hills over the last three to four weeks. According to sources, tourists mainly prefer to visit the hills whenever there is flow on the falls. Saturdays and Sundays register a significant number of tourists. While a section of tourists prefer to stay in the cottages run by the Forest Department and a few private accommodations, others complete their visit within a day. “We noticed a jump in the arrival of tourists to the hills in the recent past. The hills are home to a vast range of flora and fauna. Nature lovers indulge in a host of activities such as trekking, bird-watching and nature photography,” says Saravanakumar, Assistant Conservator of Forests. Some visit the tribes to have first hand knowledge of the culture of the indigenous communities and their customs and traditions. Stating that the Pachamalai Tourism Development Project, which will be implemented at a cost of ₹4.27 crore, would make a significant mark in attracting tourists, Collector M. Pradeep Kumar said that the work on creating basic infrastructure and safety measures for tourists had been started. The project would be completed within six months. S. Gangadharini, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, said that besides creating basic amenities for tourists, a number of adventure tourism infrastructure would be established under the project.  Published – January 19, 2025 08:31 pm IST

Sooke wants to give your business a bike rack

The District of Sooke has announced they are giving away free bike racks, in an effort to bolster sustainable transportation and biking within the community.

“We’re providing another option for easier access to connect with and support local businesses. When talking with businesses to inform the Community Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan, business operators identified limited bike parking as a barrier for customers,” says community economic development officer Gail Scott.

“We’re happy to alleviate one obstacle as we continue to grow our local economy and support multi-modal transportation options.”

The Bike Rack for Business Program was announced on Jan. 16 and will see a limited number of public racks fabricated and installed for local businesses completely free of charge. Due to the limited number of racks, they will be given on a first-come first-served basis. Interested businesses are told to apply early if they wish to be considered.

One business already looking to receive a bike rack is the Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Centre.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the Bike Rack for Business program!” said Michelle Richard, the museum and visitor centre’s executive director.

“We are fortunate to have a great location accessible from the Stickleback Urban Trail and a short ride from the Galloping Goose. We see lots of visitors who arrive by bike, come to the Visitor Centre for local information and then decide to stay awhile.”

Richard also pointed out that the program is not just beneficial for visitors, but business staff as well.

“Four out of eight staff members joined the team and biked to work most of the summer and fall — we look forward to getting back to it soon.”

In a news release, the district stated, “This is a great opportunity to enhance accessibility for customers, promote eco-friendly transportation, and contribute to the district’s efforts to reduce emissions and create a more sustainable community.”

To be eligible businesses must be located within Sooke and hold a valid business license. Tenants will have to provide a suggestion for the rack’s location, permission from their landlord to have the bike rack installed and must agree to maintain the bike rack after installation.

Those interested in applying for a bike rack can find more information at Sooke.ca.

How Small Business Owners Can Navigate The TikTok Ban Stress

TikTok has become a cornerstone of many organizations’ marketing strategies, particularly for engaging younger audiences with creative, short-form content. The potential ban has sparked widespread concern among marketers, given the platform’s vital role in engaging younger audiences through creative, short-form video content.

The ban disrupts marketing strategies and highlights the risks of over-reliance on a single platform for audience engagement. For small business owners heavily invested in TikTok, this is a critical reminder to diversify marketing efforts and explore alternative channels to ensure resilience in the face of digital platform volatility.

When disruptions like this arise, leaders must act swiftly to manage the stress within their teams, ensure marketing continuity and safeguard their brand’s momentum.

Diversify Marketing Channels
Relying on a single channel can leave small businesses vulnerable to sudden disruptions, no matter how successful. By embracing a multi-channel strategy—leveraging platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest and email marketing—companies can safeguard their reach and ensure consistent engagement with their audience. This diversification reduces dependency and unlocks new opportunities to connect with different demographics, strengthen brand visibility and maintain resilience in an unpredictable digital landscape:

Start by expanding beyond social media. Invest in content marketing initiatives such as blogs, podcasts and webinars to establish a robust and independent digital presence.

Prioritize Owned Content
Owned media ensures your brand remains visible and resilient against platform-specific disruptions and helps build lasting trust with your audience. By creating high-value, evergreen content that informs, entertains or educates, businesses can drive organic traffic and establish themselves as thought leaders in their industry. Additionally, owned media provides greater control over your brand’s narrative, reduces dependency on external algorithms, and creates opportunities to cultivate deeper, more meaningful connections with your audience over time. You deepen relationships with your audience through newsletters, exclusive offers and engaging content.

Tap Into Influencer Communities
Influencers have been instrumental in TikTok’s rise to prominence, and many creators have established audiences across multiple platforms. Leaders can capitalize on this by collaborating with influencers who can adapt their content for other channels:

Identify multiplatform influencers: Many TikTok creators have robust followings on Instagram or YouTube, making them valuable partners for cross-platform campaigns.
Repurpose content: Work with influencers to repurpose TikTok-style content for platforms that remain accessible. This ensures continuity in your brand voice and creative appeal.

Embrace Agile Marketing
The TikTok ban allows leaders to foster agility within their teams. Agile marketing emphasizes adaptability, experimentation and collaboration—critical attributes in uncertain times; it enables teams to pivot quickly, keeping campaigns fresh and relevant.

Foster open communication: Create a safe space for team members to share concerns and ideas. Transparent communication builds trust and reduces anxiety.
Host regular brainstorming sessions: Encourage your team to share creative ideas to reach your audience through new channels.
Test and learn: Experiment with different platforms, content formats and messaging styles to determine what resonates best with your audience.
Provide stress management resources: Offer mental health support, flexible schedules or stress-relief activities to help your team navigate challenges with resilience.
Building a loyal community is critical to a brand’s survival.getty
Strengthen Community Building
Fostering a sense of community sustains brand loyalty. Leaders can guide their teams to focus on direct and meaningful connections with customers.

Create exclusive experiences: Offer access to online communities, loyalty programs or virtual events that encourage deeper engagement with your brand.
Encourage advocacy: Empower satisfied customers to share their experiences through reviews, testimonials or word-of-mouth referrals.

Contingency Plan
A proactive strategy designed to prepare an organization for unexpected disruptions or changes ensures operations can continue or quickly recover. It outlines specific actions, roles, and resources needed to address potential risks effectively. Here’s a breakdown of what a strong contingency plan looks like:

Risk identification: Define potential scenarios by identifying risks that could disrupt your business (e.g., TikTok ban, platform outages, economic downturns, cybersecurity breaches). Then, rank scenarios based on their likelihood and potential impact.
Objectives of the plan: Set clear goals by stating what the plan aims to achieve, such as maintaining customer engagement, minimizing revenue loss, or protecting data. Also, define how success will be measured (e.g., audience retention rates, alternative platform engagement, downtime minimized).
Actionable steps: Identify alternative methods to achieve key business objectives.
Roles and responsibilities: Designate a contingency team or leader to manage implementation.
Resources and tools: Ensure alternative platforms, tools or vendors are ready to activate if primary ones fail and ensure critical data is regularly backed up and accessible during disruptions.
Communication plan: Create clear communication channels to keep teams informed during crises. Developing pre-approved messages for customers, stakeholders and media to address the situation professionally makes the process more seamless.
Testing and Updating: Test the plan periodically to identify gaps and ensure readiness. Review and revise the plan as risks, technologies, and business needs evolve.

Example: Contingency Plan For A TikTok Ban

Objective: Maintain audience engagement and ensure marketing continuity.
Immediate Actions: Shift content to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts and increase email campaigns to engage followers directly.
Roles: Marketing manager to oversee platform shifts; content creators to repurpose TikTok content.
Resources: Subscribe to tools like Canva or Adobe to create platform-optimized content.
Communication: Notify the audience via email, website and other social platforms about changes in content delivery.
Testing: Monitor engagement metrics on alternative platforms weekly to ensure effectiveness.

Marketing disruptions like a TikTok ban may create challenges but also present opportunities for innovation and growth. Leaders focusing on diversification, creativity and team alignment can turn uncertainty into an advantage.
