The TELUS World of Science — Edmonton says it will be temporarily closed after a small fire Monday afternoon.
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to the science centre around 1 p.m. and were able to contain the fire to a small area.
“We are extremely grateful for the quick response of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services,” said Kyla Amrhein, Director of Marketing and Community Relations. “It is reassuring to know we are prepared to act quickly and effectively in the best interest of our guests and our staff, and that our community partners – including first responders and EPS – are always ready to keep our community safe.”
While the TELUS World of Science says no exhibits were impacted, the closure to the science centre is a precautionary measure.
“Our priority right now is to ensure the safety of all our visitors, staff, and volunteers,” Amrhein said. “We are working closely with our City of Edmonton partners and are grateful that this will only result in minor disruptions to delivering on our mission to create a community of curious minds through the wonders of science. We look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as possible.”
At the time of the fire, school groups at the science centre were all evacuated safely by staff to buses and to the Edmonton Police Association building, which is across the street.
TELUS World of Science says any visitors that have passes or bookings during the closure can contact the science centre starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 21, for refunds or to reschedule.
