I was thrilled to hear the exciting news over plans to create the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant at West Burton, writes Coun Jonathan Bailey.
An investment of £410million to develop fusion energy has been announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, alongside a shortlist of five construction and engineering bids in the running to build STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) by 2040, which, once completed, hopes to unlock limitless clean power.
Not only will STEP create more employment opportunities in the district, but it will also bring massive investment to the area and be a game changer for our local economy.
If you would like to know more about STEP and the UKAEA, please visit www.step.ukaea.uk.
You may also have heard in December, the Government announced plans to reorganise local government across England and replace two tier areas (where services are provided by a county council and a borough or district) like Bassetlaw and Nottinghamshire with unitary councils.
Since then, the leaders of all nine councils across the county have met and agreed to work together to put forward a response with the focus on proposals delivering quality services for local people and be sustainable.
After the elections, more discussions will be held before a preferred option is presented to Government later in the Autumn.
Finally, we’re continuing to try and inspire young people into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.
One of the ways we’re doing this is by encouraging young minds to seek answers about the world around them as we support the Nottinghamshire Festival of Science and Curiosity.
A series of free family activities are running through half term week next month, with various events taking place across the district.
The Bridge and Fusion café, Bassetlaw Museum and Harworth and Bircotes Town Hall are among those hosting events. These are a great way for young people to explore science through hands-on activities and, hopefully, be inspired to follow these subjects in their future studies or careers.

across Bassetlaw, please visit www.nottsfosac.co.uk.
