GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -Colorado Mesa University’s fire science program graduated 29 students today, marking the largest class in the program’s history.
The Fire Science Technology program prepares students for entry-level jobs in fire services and provides additional training for those already working in fire services who want to advance their careers.
“All of these students want to be here. They want to be firefighters. They want to learn. They want to be of service to their community,” said Brian Bonar, a program instructor.
Training and curriculum
Students receive training on operations, including house burns, car fires, forcible entry and other emergency response scenarios.
“They’ve definitely helped me, you know, showing me what I’m weak at and then what I’m strong at. They’ve definitely pushed me and shown me, like, I can go past my limits or what I thought was my limits,” Abby Kearl, the graduate, said.
Program requirements
“I would just say determination, hard work, dedication, accountability, holding yourself and your teammates accountable,” one student said.
Another graduate said, “It takes mental toughness, physical toughness, and heart.”
Students said the program serves as the best starting point for those seeking careers in firefighting or volunteer firefighting positions.
According to CMU Tech, local agencies within Mesa County have signed a letter of support for the program, which includes job opportunities for graduates.
