CLEVELAND, Ohio –— Great Lakes Science Center is rolling out a flurry of hands-on winter activities to keep families curious, creative and warm through the holidays.
The center’s seasonal lineup begins with a cocoa-catapult family workshop at 1 and 3 p.m. on Dec. 20, 27 and Jan. 3.
During the hourlong sessions, families can design, build, decorate and test miniature catapults using everyday materials. Then, they will try launching “marshmallows” into cups of “cocoa.” Staff will also fire up a larger, demonstration catapult. The workshop costs $5 per person, and participants can take their creations home.
Winter Wonder Days follow from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, bringing a daily schedule of STEM-inspired activities. Guests can make faux “polysnow,” test hockey friction on different surfaces, search the museum for runaway gingerbread people, contribute a paper snowflake to a community snow globe installation and catch the center’s Fire and Ice Big Science Show.
Families looking to celebrate the New Year without staying up late can join the Noon Year’s Eve festivities on Dec. 31. A special Cryoblast show will explore the extreme chill of liquid nitrogen before a midday countdown capped with a science-powered bang.
Unless otherwise noted, all activities are included with general admission.
