Indian scientists have explained the scientific cause behind the Gannon Superstorm, a powerful solar storm that struck Earth in May 2024. This was the strongest solar storm recorded in the last two decades. Researchers from Mumbai University were part of this important study, enabling the university to make a significant mark in global space research.
According to the study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, multiple massive solar eruptions occurred consecutively on the Sun in May 2024. These eruptions created an enormous magnetic reconnection region in space nearly 100 times the size of Earth, measuring about 1.3 million kilometers.
This process caused the solar storm to reach Earth with much greater intensity. The storm had a substantial impact on satellite operations, communication systems, and Earth’s magnetic shield. The discovery is based on data and observations collected jointly from India’s Aditya-L1 mission and six NASA spacecraft. The research was led by Dr. Ankush Bhaskar of ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, along with his student Shibitosh Biswas.
The guidance of Prof. Anil Raghav from Mumbai University played a crucial role in the study. With his support, PhD students Ajay Kumar and Kalpesh Ghag contributed significantly to data analysis and interpretation. This collaboration has strengthened India’s position on the global scientific stage, and the researchers have expressed their intent to expand international scientific cooperation in the future.
This breakthrough, showcasing the growing strength of Indian research in space science, is considered a milestone for both the country and Mumbai University. Mumbai University stated that this achievement is a moment of pride for the institution.
