US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff announced “significant progress” in negotiations with the Ukrainian delegation in Berlin and confirmed that a second meeting will take place today.
In an interview with Radar Armenia, political scientist Armen Vardanyan noted that reducing some points is progress. “First, a 28-point proposal was presented, and its number was reduced. At the moment, the proposal is about 20 points; the rest have come out, which are anti-Ukrainian,” he said, adding that now Ukraine is pushing its agenda forward, creating more favorable conditions.
According to the political scientist, Ukraine will not achieve peace following these meetings. “There are issues on which the positions of Ukraine and Russia are opposite, divergent,” he emphasized.
According to Armen Vardanyan, the initial version under discussion is unacceptable to Ukraine; therefore, changes were made, which is progress. “But, let me repeat, the prospects for a final ceasefire are vague. Russia wants to get a paper to keep Ukraine in its zone of influence,” he noted, adding that Russia is afraid that after the ceasefire is signed, Ukraine may become even stronger, even take back a second territory in a few years.
“Also, for example, Russia wants a document in the form of a document that Ukraine refuses to join NATO, which is not beneficial to Ukraine, since in the future it sees its security only under the auspices of NATO,” the political scientist said.
