The event, held in Dublin’s Trinity College on Saturday, December 6, saw the team deliver an exceptional performance, securing victory with an impressive score of 42/48.
The win came at the end of an extremely close final as St. Peter’s College of Dunboyne finished just one point behind on 41/48, claiming second place, while Coláiste Einde, Salthill, took third with 40/48. Five additional teams tied for fourth place on 39 points, leaving the final round to determine who would lift the coveted Crystal Trophy.
The triumphant CBS The Green team, which was made up of Pat Brosnan, Ethan Ward and MJ McCarthy and coached by Ms Áine Knightly, held their nerve to edge ahead of the competition by the narrowest of margins.
Speaking about the win, the school said that it “brings immense pride and honour to the school” and “also recognises the dedication and guidance of Ms Knightly, whose commitment, tireless preparation, and unwavering support helped propel the team over the line.”
A total of 51 teams from across Ireland assembled in the Stanley Quek Theatre at TCD for the national final, having qualified through regional rounds held in mid-November. In all, more than 360 teams – comprising over 1,000 students – took part nationwide in 15 regional events, making the Senior Science Quiz the ISTA’s flagship All-Ireland student science competition.
This year’s quiz featured challenging questions drawn from Leaving Certificate Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and general Science.
Speaking following the boys’ win, Ms Knightly said that she could not be happier or prouder of her students for taking home the win.
“As a LC Chemistry and Biology teacher at CBS The Green, I am incredibly proud of our students. Their success highlights the school’s strong STEM tradition—from the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition to ongoing excellence in national competitions. I hope their achievement will motivate many more students to engage with science and to take part in future events,” she said.
Winning the National ISTA Senior Science Quiz is more than just claiming a trophy. It is a symbol of hard work, teamwork, commitment, and a genuine passion for learning. It inspires the entire school community to aim high, embrace challenges, and believe that success is always within reach,” she continued.
