Speakers at the annual seminar of the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) emphasized the need to elevate marine science research in Bangladesh to international standards.
They noted that Bangladesh possesses immense potential in terms of marine resources, and that scientific research will play a crucial role in formulating sound marine policies and informed decision-making, ultimately contributing to the improvement of livelihoods in coastal communities.
The two-day annual seminar was inaugurated on Friday at the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute in Cox’s Bazar. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Director General of BORI, Commodore Md. Minarul Haque. The Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Md. Anwar Hossain, attended the event as the chief guest. Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals, Professor Dr. Khandaker Mokaddem Hossain, also addressed the seminar. In addition, professors from various universities and marine researchers from across the country delivered their remarks.
During the two-day seminar, scientists and researchers of the institute presented their research findings and shared their professional experiences. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the current status, future action plans, and challenges of the blue economy centered on marine resources; sedimentary processes and mineral investigations in the central and western coastal-marine areas of Bangladesh; assessment of sediment transport and coastal sedimentary processes for coastal erosion protection along the eastern coast of Bangladesh; and the evaluation of nutrient dynamics and eutrophication in Bangladesh’s coastal waters.
The seminar highlighted the importance of strengthening marine research to support sustainable development, effective resource management, and evidence-based policymaking for the country’s coastal and marine sectors.
