Air Force Lieutenant Derlis Ramón Cáceres Troche, a recipient of a scholarship from Paraguay’s National Scholarship Programme (BECAL), has gained international recognition by delivering a keynote address at the 25th Science and Innovation Week in Madrid, one of Spain’s premier science outreach events.
Cáceres Troche is currently undertaking a PhD in Education at the Autonomous University of Madrid. His participation in the prestigious event underscores the growing influence of Paraguayan scholars on the global stage.
Engaging lecture on Artificial Intelligence
In his presentation, titled “How do machines think? An introduction to artificial intelligence”, Cáceres Troche offered a clear and engaging explanation of how AI has become integral to daily life. He highlighted familiar examples, such as requesting music from Siri, receiving personalised recommendations on Netflix, or generating text with ChatGPT.
The Paraguayan researcher captivated the audience at the event with live demonstrations of neural networks, predictive algorithms, and generative models. He carefully distinguished key concepts, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.
Exploring levels and challenges of AI
Cáceres Troche delved into the varying levels of AI – weak, general, and superintelligent – while addressing the profound ethical and social implications. These include algorithmic bias, privacy concerns, and the impact of automation on employment.
He also showcased practical applications of AI across diverse fields, such as health, aviation, education, art, and digital consumption. Emphasising responsible adoption, he argued that the true challenge lies not merely in understanding the technology, but in using it critically: “Education should prepare people to live with artificial intelligence, not to fear it,” he stated during the lecture.
The Madrid Science and Innovation Week
The Madrid Science and Innovation Week is a science outreach and citizen participation event organised by the Community of Madrid through the madri+d Knowledge Foundation. Its objective is to actively involve society in the processes of research and development in science, technology, and innovation.
Lieutenant Cáceres Troche’s appearance at the event reinforces Paraguay’s emerging role in international discussions on science, technology, and education. It demonstrates that Paraguayan talent is increasingly prominent in global forums, helping to shape a more innovative and ethical future.
