With a haul of over 100 medals, Filipino students topped the just concluded 2025 World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC) which the country hosted from December 15 to 18 in Zamboanga City.
Aside from the 11 golds, 17 silvers and 22 bronzes in the individual contest, the hosts also bagged four merit citations and 48 other medals in the team contest.
The other top performing delegations include Vietnam, which was named overall champion for the Middle Primary Division, as well as teams from Bulgaria, Indonesia and Thailand.

The hosts were named overall champions in the Math Upper Primary and Junior High School Divisions.
Teams from South Korea, Hong Kong and Malaysia also took part in the WMSC while China, India, Macau and Sri Lanka sent observers.
The Mathematics Trainers’ Guild of the Philippines (MTG) conducted the contest at the Grand Astoria hotel in the port city.
MTG head Dr. Simon Chua named the gold medalists as Cyrus Carl Manarang, Cyris Chad Manarang, Sabrina Louis Cheong and Samuel Alarcon (all from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School); Reese Allison Pardinas (Legazpi Hope Christian School); Jeian Jamaine Chua (Makati Hope Christian School), and Anton Elumbaring (Phil. Christian Gospel School).

First runners up: Cheong, Chan, Lim, Hung, Sy, Lee and Tumbokon.

Meanwhile, among the WMSC Special guests are Haji Mohd Hafiz bin Mohd Salleh of the Kedah State Education Department, Malaysian Ministry of Education, Zamboanga City Mayor KhymerAdan Olaso, Vice Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco and representatives of DepEd and DOST regional offices.
The nearly 180 local and foreign delegates were treated to a sightseeing tour of the city’s tourist spots like the City Museum, Fort Pilar, the Sadik Mosque and Ecozone, among others.

Founded by the Spaniards in 1635, Zamboanga is the nation’s third oldest city. It is known for its rich history and a unique blend of Spanish, indigenous and Islamic influences.
