When: Solanco school board meeting, Dec. 15.
What happened: The board heard a presentation on new classes that will be offered starting with the 2026-27 school year.
Background: Earlier this year the board heard about a new class on drone lab course. There is also a course proposed for cyber security.
What’s new: High School Principal Scott Long said there will be a new Advanced Placement environmental science class at the high school. Additional new courses include: Foundations of Education: Instructional Practice; and field experience/internship. These courses, along with existing courses in sociology, Child Development and Child Development 2, will create a general education program that will be sent to the state for approval.
More: Students who successfully complete the two-year program of high school education courses can earn 9-15 course credits transferable to any Pennsylvania state university.
Quotable: “This could be a way to bring our graduates back to teach in Solanco,” Long said.
Audit: The board heard a report on the district’s annual audit, performed by Barbacane, Thornton & Company. Alex Frank, CPA, said that it is a clean audit with no recommendations.
Next meeting: The board will meet again Jan. 5.
