The staff of Belgorod State Technological University (BSTU) named after V.G. Shukhov has developed a program to optimize the composition and characteristics of robots for coordinated work in groups. The invention has passed the state registration as a computer program.
The development is a software package for the automated selection and configuration of groups of robots designed to perform tasks together. The system analyzes various parameters, from the technical characteristics of each robot to the external conditions of the task, and based on this, forms the optimal composition of the group and predicts its behavior in a changing environment.
“The key advantage of the solution is the use of modern optimization algorithms, which make it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of the system. The program makes it possible to achieve lower energy consumption, minimize operating costs and improve the coordination of interaction between robots,” said one of the authors of the development, a junior researcher at the Research Institute of Robotics and Control Systems of the BSTU named after V.G. Shukhov. Vladislav Cherkasov.
As the scientist noted, the existing analogues work on the principle of “one operator, one drone,” which is their key limitation. Such a management scheme does not scale well, requires constant human involvement and large technical resources. For group tasks, several operators and a complex communication infrastructure have to be used, which significantly increases costs. In addition, the centralized control systems used are vulnerable — if communication, navigation, or even one device fails, the entire mission can be disrupted.
The technology is designed for complex applications in various industries. In the Ministry of Emergency Situations and rescue services, the system will allow searching for victims and delivering medicines to hard-to-reach areas. In the agro-industrial complex, it can be used for crop monitoring, spot treatment of plants and cargo transportation. For the transport industry, the development is useful in monitoring the condition of the infrastructure and the prompt delivery of emergency equipment. In the energy sector, the system can be used to inspect power lines, gas pipelines, and wind farms, as well as to deliver repair equipment to hard-to-reach locations.
