Amazon Prime rescued The Expanse, adding two seasons to the TV show’s lifespan. Yet now that it is all over, the streamer will be looking for its sci-fi follow-up, and comic readers already know what it should be: Black Science. The transformative take on the Multiverse concept is a hit-in-the-making waiting to be adapted.
Black Science was written by Rick Remender, with art by Matteo Scalera. The series debuted in 2013 and concluded in 2019, and readers know it redefined the word “whirlwind” with its sprawling exploration of the “Eververse.”
Black Science’s mix of emotional storytelling and surreal visuals makes it exactly what fans of The Expanse need as a chaser for the sci-fi series.
“Black Science” Reinvents The Multiverse Like Never Before, Making It Perfect For Amazon’s Next Sci-Fi Project
Black Science #1, Written By Rick Remender; Art By Matteo Scalera; Released In 2013
Black Science follows the adventures of Grant McKay, his family, and a team from the “Anarchist Order of Scientists” as they seek to find their way home after getting lost in the “Eververse,” the series’ take on an endless, constantly multiplying Multiverse. In a sense, it is like the classic series Lost in Space, except with the dial cranked to 11,000.
The early issues of the series set up themes of guilt and betrayal that played out over the course of Black Science’s 43-issue run. Grant and his crew are catapulted on their perilous journey after a member of the team sabotages “the Pillar,” the “black science” device Grant used to open a passageway to other dimensions.
Even when the traitor is revealed, it’s just the beginning of Black Science’s wild ride, rather than the ending. The story goes to some truly unexpected narrative places, just as it offers a stunning look at the possibilities of the Multiverse, with often surreal, boundary-pushing art from co-creator Matteo Scalera.
“Black Science” Would Need A Blockbuster Budget, But It’s Worth; Exploring The Potential For Amazon’s Next Big Genre Hit
Black Science #43, Written By Rick Remender; Art By Matteo Scalera; Released In 2019
Black Science has enough story to last multiple seasons of a TV series, and that’s just if an adaptation followed the source material closely. The book’s ensemble cast and reality-hopping premise offer plenty of opportunity to explore roads not taken by the comic, and to expand on the core elements established by Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera.
Black Science would require a significant budget for the series’ vision to come alive on screen, which is what makes it a perfect next series for Amazon Prime. Black Science is a stellar investment for the studio to make. If done right, it could become more than just the next Expanse. It could reach Game of Thrones levels of popularity.
